Lesson Plan 1

Student Name: Annemarie Triano

I. General Information:

Grade Level: 1st Grade

Discipline: Mathematics

Unit Topic:Geometry

Time Frame: 45 Minutes

Text: The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns

Other Materials:

• Geo Boards

• Geo Bands (Rubber Bands)

• Graph Paper

• Rulers

• Pencils

II. Standards/Indicators

• RI1 CCR Anchor Standard: Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

• RI1: Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

• RI2: Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.

• RI6: Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.

• RI7: Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.

• 1.G: Reason with shapes and their attributes

• 1.G.1: Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.

• 1.G.2: Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter- circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape

III. Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to use geoboards, paper, and pencil to build shapes that possess defining attributes

IV. Procedures:

Introduction

• Start by asking the children the name any shapes that they know, and discuss the different attributes of each shape.

• Use a SMARTBoard or poster to create a list of the shapes the children named and include a drawing/visual.

• Ask the children about the different characteristics of shapes, (example: How many sides does a square have?)

Teaching/Activities

1. Introduce the story The Greedy Triangle, ask the children to make predictions about what they believe the story will be about. Ask the children about their predictions regarding shapes in the story “What shapes do you think we might find in this story?”

2. Tell the children that they are to listen for the names of different shapes, because after the reading you will ask them to list the different shapes from the story.

3. Remind the children to pay attention to the illustrations and words when listening to the story to help them remember what each shape looks like.

4. Read The Greedy Triangle or play the electronic read-aloud version.

5. Ask the students to name some of the shapes that appeared in the story and describe their different “characterisitics” or “attributes.”

6. Hand out the geoboards and geobands, and allow the children 5-10 minutes to explore the geoboards and practice building shapes.

7. Draw or display a shape on the SMARTBoard or whiteboard.

8. Have the students make the shape that you displayed using their geoboards and geobands. *If students need assistance give them a hint such as telling them to count the sides.

9. Have the students tell you the name of the shape they have created.

10. Make about 5-10 more shapes depending on time and how well the students are grasping the concept.

Closure

• Have the students pair up and tell them they will be making posters to hang in the classroom as future references.

• Using the graph paper ask each set of partners to draw a shape talked about in the book.

• Check each drawing for the correct name and amount of straight lines.

VI. Evaluation/Assessment:

Assessment of Objectives

• Discuss the names of the different shapes.

• Ask each student to name a shape and explain the different attributes/characteristics of that shape.
