Kindergarten Class Syllabus

Course Description

Each family will be given a course syllabus. The curriculum for each grade level is in the booklet. If you have any questions about the curriculum, feel free to ask. Listed below is a brief description of each area. This information can also be accessed through the district website, ().

Reading/Language Arts

Reading and language arts lessons are conducted in a workshop format. Students receive instruction whole group, individually, and in small groups. Our Readers Workshop is a comprehensive literacy approach which includes: Wilson’s Fundations Program, spelling, grammar, guided reading, independent reading, shared reading and read alouds. Writers Workshop includes whole group and individual instruction based on lessons in Units of Study by Lucy Calkins.

Math

Math lesson are conducted using a hands-on approach and drill and practice of skills with the integration of writing. The Math in Focus Program supplemented with New York State generated teaching modules focus on:

- Shapes

- Sorting and Classifying

- Number Writing

- Counting

- Adding and Subtracting

- Word Problems

- Geometry

- Measurement

- Geometry

Science

Students will be investigating science through a hands-on approach using the BOCES Science 21 Program. This program incorporates the use of higher order thinking skills. The topics explored this year are:

- Using the 5 Senses to learn and appreciate Science and to learn about body parts

- Mixtures

- Living and Non Living

Social Studies

Social Studies lessons through Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES are integrated with language arts. The topics explored this year are:

- Myself and Others

- Families

- The School Community

- The State and Nation

- Holidays and Celebrations

Texbooks, Handbook(s) and other resources

• Fundations workbook and composition book.

• Math in Focus workbook.

• Other resources include leveled books and manipulatives.

Classroom Expectations and Procedures

• Students are expected to come to class prepared. This includes completing homework from the night before, having their take home folder in class everyday, bringing a nutritious morning snack and being well rested.

• Students are expected to follow the classroom rules:

1. Follow directions.

2. Listen when someone else is speaking.

3. Raise your hand to speak.

4. Always do your best work.

5. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

• Stickers, notes, prizes, special activities or privileges are rewards for good behavior.

• If the classroom rules are broken, consequences may include a verbal warning, minutes away from recess and/or contacting parents.

Homework

• There is homework every day except Friday. All assignments are due the next day unless noted.

• Part of daily homework is to read for 10 minutes a day and practice sight words.

• Incomplete class work will be sent home to be finished for homework.

• All Science and Social Studies home projects are part of your child’s report card grade.

Activities/projects unique to this class

• All activities and projects reflect the New York State Standards for Kindergarten.

Recommended/required materials for class

• Students need crayons, pencils, scissors, glue sticks, an art smock and a folder.

Grading Procedures

• Reading: Reading grades are based on reading conference notes, running records, DRA (Direct Reading Assessment) results, daily guided reading sessions, phonics skills, mastery of sight words and comprehension skills.

• Math: Math grades are based on daily work, teacher observation and classroom assessments.

• Language Arts: Language arts grades are based on listening and speaking during class discussions, writing conference notes, handwriting, writing sentences, spelling, and writing benchmarks.

• Science and Social Studies: Grades are based on students’ ability to work cooperatively in groups, teacher observations, and classwork.

Birthdays

Students are welcome to bring in a snack (no beverages please) to share with the class on their birthday. Our kindergarten class has a peanut allergy. Please be mindful of this when sending in a snack to share. Please make sure the snacks are all the same to prevent any tears. A note a day in advance would be appreciated. We have 25 students in our class. Party invitations will not be distributed in class unless the following guidelines are used:

• All the children are invited

OR

• Just all the boys are invited

OR

• Just all the girls are invited

This keeps children from having hurt feelings regarding outside parties. We currently have 17 girls and 8 boys in our class.
