[pic]STEP 1

Sew each of the color number 3, 4, and 5 strips to a color number 2 strip, shown here as white. Press seams toward darker color.

Lay out on cutting mat. Cut across at 6-1/2 inches to get 12 [16]. You should get 6 from each strip set. Put like colors together.

Press the fabric to be used for the quilt back. Lay out a piece of batting the required size on a flat surface. Place the pressed piece of backing fabric RIGHT SIDE UP on top of the batting. Place the completed, pressed top WRONG SIDE UP on top of backing. RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER!

Smooth the wrinkles and center the top on the batting and backing. The top will be slightly smaller. Make sure the backing and batting are the same size or a bit larger than the top. Pin around the edges, through all the layers.

Starting on any edge and about one third in from any corner, sew 1/4" from the raw edge of top around all four sides, leaving an opening of about 10". Start with backstitching, pivot at each corner, and end with backstitching. Trim seams and clip corners. Turn carefully to right side, pulling corners as square as possible. Press around edges of quilt lightly and stitch opening shut by hand or machine.

Topstitch around the outer edges to make the quilt more durable. Use a decorative stitch if you wish. Sew a “Pa Hom Rak” label on the lower right of the quilt back. Turn under the sides of label and stitch through the sides of the label only. Sew label through all quilt layers using white thread for top thread. Match thread to quilt front for bobbin.

STEP 7 Tie the quilt by machine – when using a high loft batting, machine-tie the quilt to preserve the loft. A quilt can be machine tied by using a zigzag or decorative stitch, or by attaching ribbons or yarns. Mark the placement of the ties on the quilt top. Stagger the rows of ties for greater interest and strength. Space the ties approximately 5 inches (12.5 cm) apart. Three Ways to Tie a Quilt by Machine

1. Zigzag stitch. Adjust stitch length and width to 0. Holding threads behind needle, stitch several times through all layers. Adjust stitch width to a wide setting: stitch 8 to 10 times. Return stitch width to 0; stitch several times. Clip thread.

2. Decorative stitch. Use a decorative stitch instead of a zigzag stitch to secure quilt layers; adjust stitch length and width for an attractive design. Stitch in place at beginning and end of decorative stitch.

3. Ribbon or yarn. Cut a 3 inch to 6 inch (7.5 to 15 cm) length of ribbon for each tie. Tie into bow. Center bow over placement mark; stitch bow in place, using zigzag stitch.

Advanced users can practice their free motion quilting instead of tying by machine.
