Path of the Warrior: The Woman Warrior

Modern and Post-Colonial Voices

LASA Senior English

This unit revolves around 20th-century poetry and prose relating to the theme of the warrior. Through allegory and motif, Maxine Hong-Kingston demonstrates her battles over assimilation and identity.

Reading Schedule and Notes/Discussions:

Feb. 26/27: Read “No Name Woman” and “White Tigers” (notes due) (pp. 3-53)

Mar. 4/5: Read “Shaman” (no notes this week) (pp. 57-109)

Mar. 12/13: Read “At the Western Palace” (notes due) (pp.113-160)

Mar. 25/26: Read “A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe” (notes due) (pp. 163-209)

Each week (except week 2), be prepared for discussion groups by taking notes on one or more of the following motifs/symbols and one or more types of irony in the assigned section.

Notes format:

Header: motif or type of irony. Page #. Excerpt/partial quote. 1-2 sentence explanation.

Repeat for another example.

Type examples in a one-page single-spaced list.

Motif: These motifs are often symbolic. a) voice/words/stories b) ghosts c) birds d) other animals (dragons, tigers, etc.) e) blood f) colors (red, white, etc.), g) weapons. Explain how motif(s) develop a character, tone or theme. For example, how does the symbol of “ghosts” reveal something about Maxine as a child? How do ghosts relate to a larger theme in the book, i.e. belonging, negation, or rejection? How does each example of a ghost differ in meaning?

Themes: (You’ll notice some overlap with motifs.) a) storytelling b) memory c) girls/“feminine” d) power e) duty f) transformation

Irony: Also keep your eyes open for irony. Look for examples of verbal irony (when people say the opposite of what they mean; sarcasm), dramatic irony (when you are privy to knowledge of which a character is oblivious), or situational irony (when the opposite of what one would expect to occur actually happens). Consider how irony affects mood, characterization, and/or themes. Be sure to identify which type of irony you are discussing with each example.

Your grade each week (except week 2) will be based on your notes, your participation in discussion groups, and reading quizzes.
