Cellular Respiration / Photosynthesis Video Production

DUE: MONDAY Jan. 14th

Eligible Content

• BIO.A.3.1.1 Describe the fundamental roles of plastids (e.g., chloroplasts) and mitochondria in energy transformations.

• BIO.A.3.2.1 Compare the basic transformation of energy during photosynthesis and cellular respiration.

• BIO.A.3.2.2 Describe the role of ATP in biochemical reactions

Cellular Respiration / Photosynthesis

I. Objective: Digital Storytelling

Today’s technology allows students to tell stories in powerful ways. Using digital cameras, video cameras, editing software, and media outlets means makes it easy to show understanding of a topic.

This project will consist of using digital media and information learned in class and converting it into your own style of explaining it by creating a video. Your video MUST explain the processes of Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis. Specifically: It must address the answer to each question listed under the “Content knowledge” section of this assignment. Your video MUST also have a purpose. For example, you may create a song, commercial, talk show, game show, or story. YOUR VIDEO SHOULD NOT BE YOUR GROUP READING OFF INFORMATION ABOUT PHOTOSYNTHESIS.

***If you are unable to create a video, you may do a live performance in class. It still needs to meet all of the requirements listed on this sheet.

II. Planning

1. Decide on a group (no more than four people from your class). You may use “stand-in’s” if needed. This could be anyone else from school, home, etc.

2. Create a story line. Use the processes of Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis and decide on the layout of your video. Some suggestions or ideas are listed below to help you:

• You may want to act out the steps

• You may want to make a music video

• You may want to make a commercial, song, Talk Show, or Game Show

• Be creative!! This is suppose to be fun

3. Research and Planning: make sure your commercial, song answers the questions listed in bold on the back of this page.

4. Suggestion: Rehearse without a camera before filming

5. Time: Your video must last no less than two minutes.

6. I must be able to see all members of the group in the video in at LEAST two different scenes.

III. Content Knowledge

The following questions must be answered in your video/ performance:

Photosynthesis

1. What is the purpose of photosynthesis?

2. Where in the cell does photosynthesis take place? What is the name of the organelle?

3. What does the process of photosynthesis need? (3 items)

4. Describe the two main parts of photosynthesis: Light reactions & Calvin cycle.

5. Describe chlorophyll and its role in photosynthesis.

6. Describe stomata and their role in photosynthesis.

7. What two items are the products of photosynthesis? Which of these products is made and not needed but released?

Cellular Respiration

1. What is the purpose of cellular respiration?

3. Describe the process of cellular respiration. Include a brief description of glycolysis and the Krebs cycle.

4. Where in the cell cellular respiration take place?

5. What are mitochondria? What is their role in cellular respiration?

6. What does the cellular respiration need? (2 items). What two items are released during cellular respiration?

The Relationship between Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

1. Briefly describe the raw materials and products of each process.

2. How do the two processes work together?

3 . How are the processes different from one another?

4. Why do animals need plants?

5. Why do plants need animals?

HINT: You can find the answers to these questions in your notes, book, and in the powerpoint presentation located on our class website: brownringgold.
