Massachusetts Public Two-Year College Transfer Student ...

Massachusetts Public Two-Year College Transfer Student Graduation Rates

At the request of Donna Kuizenga, Special Assistant to the Provost, the Office of Institutional Research and Policy Studies (OIRP) is preparing to assist the University Assessment Council with an assessment of the transfer student experience.

As a first step, OIRP has computed cumulative graduation rates for the Massachusetts public two-year colleges by the college last attended. This includes all of the community colleges and Quincy College. These public two-year college transfers make up a significant portion of our incoming transfers with cohorts ranging from 812 for the 2006 cohort to over 900 students in the 2008 and 2009 cohorts.

We looked at the 2006 through 2009 cohorts. As expected, the cohorts who had been here longer had higher cumulative graduation rates. All of the following rates are for graduation with a bachelor’s degree by fall 2011. There is no control for the number of credits originally transferred in. Colleges are listed by the numbers of their students entering in each cohort. The graduation rates for the 2006 cohort (5 years) and 2007 cohort (4 years) were very positive, at 52.3% and 46.3%. In contrast, the highest 6-year graduation rate of any our incoming freshmen cohorts was 41% for the 2004 cohort. The details of the two-year public transfers are presented in Table 1.
