ENGINEERING 100W

Objectives of Assignment:

• Demonstrate your understanding of methods to measure ocean pollution.

• Use the correct format for a memo.

• Write paragraphs that each develop an idea and use a topic sentence to introduce that idea.

• Compile information from multiple sources and create an organized argument.

• Cite Sources and use quotes correctly.

Background: Our oceans suffer from many sources of anthropogenic (human caused) pollution. Examples are plastics, wastewater, oil spills, industrial waste, and agricultural runoff (“Marine pollution,” 2010). Jim Crawford from Turner Designs spoke on September 22 about innovative technologies that both scientists and regulators use to monitor the health of the ocean. Turner Designs is one of the leading providers of fluorometers, an instrument that can measure a variety of parameters including dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and chlorophyll as well as the presence of oil and blue green algae (“Filter fluorometer,” 2009). Mr. Crawford discussed the many types of vessels that are used to house the fluorometers (and other instruments) for in situ testing including floats and gliders. He spoke specifically about how instrumentation has been used to determine the location and extent of an underwater plume resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (Mascarelli, 2010).

Assignment: Write a memo to me explaining why the oil plume is of concern to scientists and regulators. What do we know about the plume and what questions remain? How has monitoring been used and how can it be used in the future to inform BP, scientists, and regulators about the location and chemical composition of the plume? Work on writing concisely and on supporting your discussion with facts and/or data.

Refer to your notes and feel free to include quotes from the speaker or other resources. A variety of resources related to ocean monitoring and the Deepwater Horizon spill can be found on the class web site .

Guidelines: The assignment must be turned in at the end of this class period and a copy MUST BE TURNED INTO . The memo must be typed on the computer. Complete the memo with 12 point Times Roman font, 1 and ½ line spacing, and 1- inch margins.

1. Write a memo from you to me that addresses the questions and concerns listed above.

2. Number your pages.

3. Cite references in APA style.

4. Include a “References” section at the end of your memo with properly formatted references.

Proofread your document before you print it. Sign it next to your name in the memo heading and hand it.
