Welcome to French 1! This course will be taught entirely in French, with the exception of grammar explanations. You are expected to participate daily. If you have questions or concerns during the course of the semester, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Purpose: This course is designed to develop oral and written skills in French. Attention will be given to speaking, listening, reading and writing. You will learn to express your interests, wishes and necessities, to describe and to recount events. We will use a variety of media, including video, film, poetry and music.

Required Material: Textbooks are available at Amherst Books and The Option.

Preparation/Participation/Attendance: This grade includes:

Attendance in class and in your TA sections

Daily classroom participation

Preparation of assignments

Pop quizzes

You are responsible for preparing all work BEFORE CLASS that is for that day. This includes the video, reading, and grammar explanations and exercises. You are to view the French in Action Video at least two times: on your own, prior to your TA section, and with your TA. This will improve vocabulary and oral comprehension and expression.

If you know that you will be absent during the course of the semester, please tell me as soon as possible. In the case of absence, you are responsible for all work missed and handed in (homework, exams, pop quizzes, grammar, etc.). Late work will be corrected but penalized.

Homework and Compositions: All homework assignments and compositions are to be typed and double-spaced.

Workbook exercises: You are to self-correct assignments in the Workbook/Cahier. Answers are located in the back of the Workbook.

Mise en oeuvre: You are to submit “Mise en oeuvre” chapter questions located in the French in Action Textbook. You are expected to listen to the Audio Files on CMS in order to fully complete and benefit from this assignment.

Compositions: Every composition that you write this semester must be revised for resubmission. You have one week to resubmit your essay from the time that it has been returned to you. You will receive a key for grammar codes so that you can correct your compositions.

Late work policy: All unexcused late work will be penalized, but graded. Late assignments will be penalized ½ grade per day. Any missed exams will be penalized.

Homework sheets: Every Friday, I will post on-line updated homework sheets. The homework sheets will make further precisions on our syllabus, detailing homework exercises and composition topics.

Vidéo: You are responsible for watching the video BEFORE CLASS and TA SESSIONS.

The reading in French in Action corresponds to the video.

You are expected to listen to the Audio Files in order to complete your “Mise en oeuvre” chapter questions.

The video and audio files are available through a) the FIA links on Blackboard and b) CMS :

Your TA and your TA sections: Attendance is mandatory and a significant part of your final grade. You are fortunate to have class with native speakers twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays). You are required to attend all courses, to prepare material before attending the class with your TA and to participate. Your TA will view the French in Action videos with you, help you with homework, prepare you for oral examinations and practice French with you.

Workbook/Cahier: You are responsible for completing the exercises in the Grammar Workbook and for correcting them. Answers are located in the back of the workbook.

Présentation orale / Cabaret : : We will have an end-of-the year performance of plays, poetry, and music. Towards the end of the semester, you will practice with your TAs as well as have additional out-of-class practice times. The performances will be held the evening of the indicated date on your syllabus.

La Table française: This is fun! Come speak with your Instructor and your French TAs, as well as your classmates! Day and time TBA.

Quartier Latin / Film series: The Language Assistants organize cultural events, to which you are all invited. Regardless of your level, you are all encouraged to attend.
