Micro-V Belt Installation - FreeAutoMechanic
Micro-V? Belt Installation
At first glance, serpentine belt systems appear much more complicated than they actually are. With a basic understanding of the system, and a few simple rules, serpentine belts are easy to install.
Most vehicle manufacturers have anticipated potential difficulties that may occur when installing a serpentine belt. Such as:
1. Belt routing.
2. Which pulley moves to adjust belt tension.
Thanks to vehicle manufacturers, the installer will usually be able to find this information on a routing decal located on or near the engine. Belt routing can also be found in some owners' manuals. The decal diagrams belt routing around pulleys, and usually indicates direction of movement for the tensioner pulley.
If routing decal is absent, these simple rules may be helpful to the installer. 1. The v-grooved side of the belt meshes with the pulley grooves. 2. The belt basically encircles the pulley system, and is drawn in and looped around smooth pulleys.

3. Usually there is only one pulley that can be threaded incorrectly. That pulley is always near the center of the pulley group, and is always a smooth pulley (no grooves).
The only pulley that can be threaded incorrectly
IMPORTANT: This publication is designed strictly as a serpentine belt installation tool. The drives listed in the Routing Guide section of this publication are the same as those in the application catalogs designated as serpentine ...except Routing Diagrams are referenced rather than belt part numbers.

4. If the belt appears too short or long to be installed, it is probably threaded the wrong way around the pulley mentioned in step 3.
If this routing doesn't work...
try this.
5. Belt should be seated into all pulley grooves and belt spans free of contact with engine components.
With belt routing solved, the tensioner must be located along with its direction and manner of movement.
Serpentine belts are usually tensioned by a spring loaded idler pulley contacting the smooth backside of the belt. The powerful spring that provides tension is located within a small cannister-like housing near the pulley. The pulley pivots around the spring housing.
Spring loading on the tensioner pulley is sufficient to require a lever to pivot pulley away from belt. Manufacturers often provide a small square hole near the pulley or spring container so that a socket driver can be used to pivot pulley.

If square hole is not present, tensioner pulley can sometimes be pivoted by using a socket wrench on the pulley centerbolt.

A - Some 1986-79, V-8 Fords have a special hole on top of the spring cannister where a pry bar can be inserted to relieve tension.
-- continued
B - Other 1986-82, V-6 Fords use a jackscrew tension adjustment. This system works by simply turning jackscrew in or out to increase or decrease tension.
C - 1988-81, 6-cyl. American Motors vehicles are tensioned at the alternator. There is no spring loading. The alternator pivot and slot bolts must be loosened to pivot alternator.
Belt Tension Ranges for Manual Tensioners
Always use a belt tension gauge that indicates static tension, such as the Krikit Tension Gauge, Part Number 91132, to determine proper tension from the Installation Chart. Many Micro-V belts are automatically tensioned by a spring-loaded automatic tensioner, which does not require the tension to be set.
The tension ranges below are used for applications requiring manual tensioning.
? For drives with manual take-up on locked-center drives, position the belt and set tension to the prescribed Installation Tension.
? Run belt for five minutes ? If belt tension drops below Suggested Tension range, retighten belt to the Installation
Tension. This will allow the belt to seat-in and run at Suggested Tension after it has operated under normal driving conditions.
