The Bookplate Society’s

Members Auction 73 To take place on 4 October 2014

Please post bids to Peter McGowan, Nethergreen House, 9 The Green, Ruddington, Notts NG11 6DY Or email: peter.mcgowan2@

The absolute deadline is Tuesday, 24 September 2014 because Peter will be travelling, so send in bids early (late bids will not be received in time).

Ensure you include your current address and contact details.

If you are bidding by email, please make sure you have received his confirmation of receipt. Successful bidders living outside the UK will be asked to pay for their lots before despatch. If two bids of the same amount are received for a lot, then the bid received first will take precedence, so early bidding is desirable.

All lots now carry reserves, either at a default value of 75% of the estimate or at an undisclosed figure set by the seller.

No bid will be accepted below the reserve. Take into account that some of our estimated prices appear rather too modest, and may be well overbid.

NB: See the members’ page of our website for images of this material.

REPORT ON AUCTION 72 HELD ON 14 JUNE 2014

Both as a departure from the UK and in specialising in the single theme of Irish bookplates, this auction meeting was an exciting innovation. Seven bidders were present in the meeting room on the second floor of the Irish Georgian Society, City Assembly House, 58 South William Street, Dublin 2, and a further eighteen members were absentee bidders. On offer in 212 lots (with in addition some duplicates available) was a wide-ranging selection of Irish material, including numerous items from the workshop of 18th century herald painter and engraver Edward Lyons, various lots of bookplates by Belfast artist John Vinycomb and several designs by Jack B Yeats.

A small collection of 102 bookplates, spread across Lots 58-74, attracted bids on some, but not all, items so that the “golden bid” successfully came into operation and the seventeen lots were preserved as a single collection, selling for just £230 (being 85% of the sum of the bids and the pre-sale estimates). Daniel O’Connell’s eared shield armorial sold for a modest £31, as did that of his uncle (lots 207 & 208). Compare this with prices of £35 for the early armorial of Baron Shelburne 1707 (lot 116), £30 for William Christmas’s bookpile (lot 78), £29 for Robert Osmond’s WPB plate for Edith Castlereagh (lot 96), £38 for Robert Day’s Sherborn pictorial armorial in red (lot 53) and £48 for the Jacobean trophy of Theophilus Desbrisay (lot 103). John Windele’s pictorial of the entrance arch at St Finn Barre Cathedral, Cork was accompanied by a letter from Robert Day, selling for £44 (lot 209). Owen Rutter’s quill pen & palm tree by Robert Gibbings fetched £46 (lot 5), and designs by Jack B Yeats for Kevin O’Duffy, Madeline Jones and Eleanor & Fred Reid realised £52, £48 and £52 (lots 46, 57 and 204). An etched armorial for The Royal Dublin Fusiliers achieved a respectable £21 (lot 17), and at the end of the sale we saw prices £32for pencil designs for Buckingham House Free School, £35 for three original pen and ink designs by Green of Cork and £46 for the scarce 18thC pictorial armorial of The Dean & Chapter of the Holy Trinity Dublin (lots 210, 211 and 212). The sale total was £3,084 (compares with £2,777 estimate, excluding estimates for unsold items) plus £395 from duplicate lots. Of the 22 lots unsold, two-thirds were snapped up after the auction by one of the postal bidders.
