Media Monitoring Results

For the period between 16 January and 9 April 2015

European Union Election Observation Mission Nigeria General Elections 28 March and 11 April 2015

The EU EOM conducted media monitoring of broadcast and print media outlets from 16 January till 9 April 2015, using quantitative and qualitative analyses, assessing the amount of time/space allocated to contestants (and other subjects) as well as the tone of their coverage. The media which were monitored are as follows:

TV stations with national or nearly national coverage Federal-government controlled TV: National Television Authority (NTA) Privately owned: TV Afrian Independent Television (AIT) and Channels TV

TV ststions were recoded daily, six hours during the evening prime time, from 17:00 till 23:00

Radio stations with national or nearly national coverage Federal-government controlled radio Capital FM (part of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria - FRCN) Privately owned radio Ray Power

Both radio stations were monitored daily from 6am till 8am and from 4pm till 6:30pm

Newspapers: The Guardian, Daily Trust and This Day

In addition, the EOM was recording and monitoring morning and evening programmes (two hours), mainly news, of state-controlled radio stations since 26 January 2015. The radio stations monitored were:

BRTV 95.3 FM Borno Radio Television Corporation; Eko FM: Lagos State Radio Service; ESBS, Enugu: Enugu State Broadcasting Service; Radio Rivers: Rivers State Broadcasting Corporation (RSBC); PRTVc- Peace 90.5 FM: Plateau Radio Television Corporation; KSMC- Capital Sounds 90.9 FM: Kaduna State Media Corporation

Explanation of the charts: The pie charts show the percentage of airtime/space allocated to contestants and other subjects. The bar charts show how much airtime/space contestants and other subjects received, and the tone of their coverage - positive (green), neutral (yellow) and negative (red).
