Genesee Valley CSD / Overview

Elementary Board ReportBrian Edmister, PrincipalApril 19, 2016By the time we have this board meeting the NYS Testing will be completed. So far, students have put in an amazing amount of time, effort, and planning for the ELA tests. From what I saw from our kids this year, Genesee Valley is well on its way to greater success than ever! Students reported that the work was not bad, in fact, many said their classwork was more challenging! That is exactly what we want our students to say! The spring concert for Grades K-4 was on Thursday, April 7th. The 4th grade band played their first concert. It was a good job by our new instrumentalists! The K-1 concert went first and students were so excited to be on stage performing. They did a wonderful job and Mr. Musingo tried something new! At the end of the concert for the K-1, he had the combined classes perform a song together. This served a few purposes! The first, no one left early. In the past, we have had the issue of people taking their child in the middle of the concert if they were done performing. Now, the performance ends and kids can safely be taken to parents. The music itself was also wonderful. The younger students were proud to be able to perform with the older ones and the older ones got to be leaders. Mr. Musingo did the same kind of plan for the 2nd-4th grade concert, ending with a very moving piece with all of our upstairs Elementary students together. It was such an impressive ending that I was swamped with parents and grandparents telling me how amazing our school is! A huge thank you to Mr. Musingo and Mr. Robbins for making GV proud of its youngest musicians! Ms. Deal once again put forth an amazing Art Festival. As I walked the halls with the parents and students, I heard many positive comments at every display. Kids were proud of their work! Ms. Deal put small notes near each display telling about the type of artwork in the display, the artists who utilize that style, and more facts. Parents and students were reading these together. One parent said, “I hope you know how lucky you are. I work in ____________ and there has never been a display like this there. Your art teacher is amazing.” While we all know this, please be sure to thank her when you see her! She does an amazing job with the “A” in STEAM!!!A huge thank you needs to go out to Ms. Norasethaporn and crew for their amazing work on the 2016 Science Fair for Grades 4-6! Our students showed just how deep their learning was by demonstrating their experiments to judges from Dr. Anderson’s students from Alfred State. Student after student gave explanations about how they understood the world’s secrets after the many hours of testing hypothesis that they had done. It was true project based learning!3626010-68429005076190132409Pin this to your fridge so you know what’s going on!00Pin this to your fridge so you know what’s going on!173421-31531Ms. Montague and Ms. Schmidt0Ms. Montague and Ms. Schmidt_______________ 50673001250954-8-201604-8-2016Class News _______2338856306128Fourth Grade News:CONGRATULATIONS to all 4th grade students for doing an AMAZING job on the ELA State Test! They also practiced solving multi-step word problems as a group and presenting the steps to solve a word problem to the rest of the class- they did awesome! If they continue using the strategies they displayed during their presentations, I have no doubt they will do amazing next week! Please talk to your child and have them tell you all the test strategies they have learned to use to help them be successful (draw a picture, underline the key words, circle the question, use process of elimination). The Science quiz has been pushed to next week. Students should review pages 386-388 in their science books over the weekend. 00Ms. Montague’s Math and Science:Fourth graders spent this week practicing for their state test next week focusing on Measurement and Data and Geometry using Front Row. He tossed a ping pong ball into a cup to determine how many of his friends/classmates got to choose from the Prize Box. PBIS is going strong in the Elementary!ADDENDUM:Teachers (and students) get a little crazy during testing. The attitudes around it have been fantastic though! With only one opt out, student and parent confidence is obviously at an all-time high! Our 1st grade enjoyed a trip to the Dresser Rand Challenger Learning Center today. They became the scientists that were needed to fly a successful mission, understand and think about the many challenges of space, and take over their own learning! Ms. Johnson’s 2nd grade class took to the great outdoors to learn about the different types of roots. The gardens that Ms. Guilford’s Garden Club planted provided the materials for the lesson as they studied the root system of plants that they pulled up right by the school! Science can be challenging, fun, and integrated into so many things. Metric measurements were taken as well! Great lesson Ms. Johnson!Mr. Bradt approached me a few weeks ago with the idea of teaching a kayaking unit to our students. Healing Waters was able to provide a variety of different types of kayaks and canoes so kids could try out what worked best for them. Great work Mr. Bradt! New experiences will last a lifetime!9144027305Ms. Hopkins/Ms. Tanner (Fillmore)Steam Activity Day4-19-2016Ms. Hopkins/Ms. Tanner (Fillmore)Steam Activity Day4-19-2016Ms. Hopkins Kindergarten class has made some good friends with Ms. Tanner’s Kindergarten class from Fillmore. They spent a lot of time talking about a STEAM-based day that they could enjoy together. Ms. Hopkins put in countless hours of planning, organizing, and setting up a number of stations that kids could begin to learn to think deeply about a task. I watched one student struggling over directions that left a lot to them to decide upon! Great work and great out-reach! ................
