Physics: Newtonian Mechanics

AP® Physics C: Mechanics

Mr. Clemens

Course Description

This course is equivalent to a first-year college physics class and is designed to prepare students for the AP® Physics C Mechanics Exam given in May. This course follows the syllabus for that examination, and students passing the exam may receive college credit. This course requires and employs a basic understanding of calculus (differentiation and integration).

Required Materials

1) Notebook - organized in a way that works well for you

2) Pencil or pen

3) Calculator - TI-8x or scientific

4) Textbook (& Textbook Supplement) - these must be, and remain, covered

Grades and Grade Determination

The Central Bucks grading scale will be used:

A: 100 – 93 B+: 89 – 87 C+: 79 –77 D+: 69 – 67 F: 59 - 0

A-: 92 – 90 B: 86 – 83 C: 76 – 73 D: 66 - 63

B-: 82 –80 C-: 72 – 70 D-: 62 - 60

Your progress will be assessed in the following ways:

Tests (& Quizzes)

( Tests (& Quizzes) – these will be given every chapter or major section, announced 1 to 3 days in advance, and will include conceptual and computational components similar in format to the AP® Physics C Mechanics Exam. (Note: some quizzes may not be announced).

Labs & Projects

( Lab reports and post lab quizzes – these will be given as appropriate, and will emphasize course content.

( Projects – these will typically be culminating projects that require you to apply the material studied in a particular unit.

Class Activities

( Class Activities – this includes any work we do in class to help you learn and understand content.

Responsibility & Homework

( Responsibility includes: being prepared for class, taking notes, paying attention, staying organized, and participating in classroom happenings. In other words, doing the right thing.

( Homework – this will be assigned and checked 4 to 5 times per week, but is dependent on the unit being studied. Most assignments will take approximately 1 hour to complete. Neatness, completeness, and accuracy count.

Your progress for the course will be determined as follows:

( 45% for marking period 1 (90% Summative & 10% Formative)

( 45% for marking period 2 (90% Summative & 10% Formative)

( 10% for the final exam — this is a cumulative exam with conceptual and computational components similar to the AP® Physics C Mechanics Exam.

Absences/Make-up work and Help

This class is about learning and understanding physics, but it is also about learning to take responsibility for your own actions. To that end, the following are intended to help guide you in making responsible decisions to increase your chances of success:

( If you are absent, you must make up all work within the same number of days as your absence (refer to student agenda).

( You need to have a valid excuse pass by the 3rd school day after returning from an absence (refer to student agenda).

( If you know you will be missing several consecutive days for any reason you might want to reconsider (90 minute classes + physics + several missed days = a bad combination), but if you still must miss several days, make sure to see me before leaving to receive assignments so you will not fall as far behind.

( My website provides homework assignments by date, homework solutions, handouts (which you should print prior to class), and helpful links. This should be a valuable resource as you progress through this course.

( I will be in room C111 before and after school per my posted schedule. Please don’t hesitate to ask for help – advanced notice would be appreciated & is suggested.
