2019-2020 Undergraduate Addendum - Northwestern University
[Pages:8]ADDENDUM TO 2019-2020 UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG
Grading and Enrollment Patterns
In Winter Quarter 2020, final exams and assessments were made optional for undergraduate students. In addition, undergraduate students were allowed to change final quality grades (ABC, etc.) to Pass/No Credit grades.
In Spring Quarter 2020, all undergraduate students' classes were graded on a Pass/No Credit basis. Deadlines to add, drop and withdraw from classes were extended.
Transfer Credit Policies
Given the widespread and abrupt changes to instruction and institutional practices as a result of the global pandemic, credit earned elsewhere during the Winter and Spring 2020 terms with grades of Pass/ Satisfactory/Credit, assuming all other transfer policies are met, are eligible for transfer articulation.
Credit earned elsewhere during Summer 2020 with grades of Pass/ Satisfactory/Credit are only eligible for transfer articulation if they were the offering institution's only available grading options.

6 Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science Addendum
ROBERT R. MCCORMICK SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE ADDENDUM
Adjustments to Policies for use of P/N Grading for Courses Taken During Winter & Spring Quarter, 2019-20
McCormick's standard policies for use of the Pass/No Credit option are defined in the McCormick Policies ( undergraduate/engineering-applied-science/#policiestext) section. Due to disruptions associated with the COVID pandemic, and university decisions about grading policies, the following changes were approved by the McCormick Curriculum Committee: 1. P grades posted during W'20 and S'20 will not be counted against the overall limit of 8 P/N units in McCormick degree requirements. 2. The limit of 1 unit of P/N credit per quarter during the first and second year is suspended for W'20 and S'20. 3. The prohibition against using P/N credit towards mathematics, engineering analysis and computer proficiency, basic science, design and communications, and basic engineering categories is suspended for courses taken W'20 and S'20. 4. Courses taken P/N during W'20 and S'20 may be used within the 16-unit major program, and will not count against program-specific limitations on the number of allowable P/N courses. 5. In a similar way, restrictions against use of P/N grading within McCormick minor and certificate programs are suspended for courses taken W'20 and S'20. These provisions apply only to McCormick programs. Programs being pursued by McCormick students in other NU schools--dual degrees, second majors, minors, certificates--are subject to the policies of those schools.

MEDILL SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM, MEDIA, INTEGRATED MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS ADDENDUM
Winter/Spring 2020 P/N Grades and Medill Requirements
The opportunities for all Medill undergraduate students to apply P/N graded units towards Medill degree requirements have been temporarily expanded for Winter 2020 and Spring 2020 P/N grades.
Typically, students may not apply more than three P/N graded units (excluding the Journalism Residency quarter) toward the 45 units required for graduation. However, P grades earned during Winter 2020 and Spring 2020, may be applied toward the following degree requirements:
? Journalism Units (including IMC courses and prerequisites) ? Distribution Requirements ? WCAS Elective Concentration ? Foreign Language Requirement ? General Electives
Please Note: We cannot guarantee a course taken P/N will count for a major, minor or certificate outside of Medill. If you take a course P/ N and later choose to major or minor in that course subject, it may not count. Please follow up with the department offering the major, minor or certificate to confirm their requirements for completion.
Students will not be limited on the number of P/N graded courses to apply toward their degree requirements from their Winter 2020 and Spring 2020 enrollment.
Students interested in applying to the IMC Certificate program may apply courses in which they have earned a P grade towards the program prerequisites, however they must still meet the 2.7 G.P.A. requirement to be admitted into the program. IMC courses completed with P grades from winter and spring 2020 will be accepted toward certificate program requirements.
Students may change their winter quarter 2020 grading until the deadline established on the University Academic Calendar (https:// registrar.northwestern.edu/calendars/academic-calendars/).
Please reach out to an adviser in the Medill Office of Student Life if you have any questions. You may schedule appointments via Inspire (https:// it.northwestern.edu/service-catalog/admin-bus/student/inspireadvising.html)? please leave the best phone number to reach you or note that you have Microsoft Teams.

? Courses may be used as a prerequisite for another course.
? Courses do not count towards the rule that no more than 6 units completed with a P grade may be applied towards graduation.
? Courses do not count towards the rule that no more than one-fifth of the total courses taken at Northwestern and offered for graduation have grades of P or D.
Winter 2020 and Spring 2020 Courses
Special university-wide grading and enrollment patterns (p. 1) applied to undergraduate students enrolled Winter 2020 and Spring 2020. Weinberg College policies that were realigned with these University adjustments are described below. Students with questions pertaining to disruption in study abroad enrollment required for a major or minor should consult an adviser in that program about exceptions.
Winter 2020 Courses
For Winter 2020 students were not subject to the usual limitation in the number of courses that may be completed in a quarter under the grading option of P (pass with credit) or N (no credit).
Courses eligible to satisfy certain Weinberg College requirements must be completed for a quality grade (see the Weinberg College (https:// catalogs.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/arts-sciences/) section of this catalog), but the following pertains to courses completed Winter 2020 with a grade of P.
Math Courses - Distribution Area Correction
Please note that MATH 230-1 Multivariable Differential Calculus and MATH 230-2 Multivariable Integral Calculus were accidentally mislabeled at the original time of the publication of the 2019-2020 Undergraduate Catalog. They are not eligible to be applied to the Weinberg College Natural Sciences Distribution Area. As calculus courses, they may be applied to the Weinberg College Formal Studies Distribution Area; as advanced math courses, completion of either one with a grade of C- or higher satisfies the Formal Studies requirement area. See Distribution Requirement Special Cases ( undergraduate/arts-sciences/#academicpoliciestext) under Weinberg College Policies in this catalog.
? Courses may be counted toward a Weinberg College major or minor if the original grade was C- or higher.
? Courses may be counted toward a Weinberg College distribution requirement.
? Courses may be counted toward the Weinberg College first-year seminar requirement.
? Courses may be used to satisfy the foreign language proficiency requirement if the original grade was C- or higher.
? Courses may be used as a prerequisite for another course; if a C- or higher is required then the original grade must be C- or higher.
? Courses do not count towards the rule that no more than 6 units completed with a P grade may be applied towards graduation.
