Essential clothes men need in their closet

Essential clothes men need in their closetThis list is a quick jump into upping your style. Nothing fancy. These are recommended clothes you should own to get the most out of your wardrobe and have you feeling ready for any occasion. Take pride in your appearance. Make a statement. Stand out. Do what you need to do to get out of that awkward teen phase of dressing and into becoming a stylish man. Somehow most men never learned how to dress properly. Not entirely their fault. Trends come and go, and people get swept up by them, forgetting the basics. You can only bend the rules once you know them. Most men don’t know those rules. You don’t need a personal wardrobe assistant like an A-list celebrity to look sharp. Actually, dressing sharp is a skill. As with all skills you must develop it through trial and error. You will develop your own style over time that reflects what you like and feel most confident wearing. Is that not the point of dressing for the occasion and looking good while doing it? To be confident. Here are the essential clothes you need in your closet.EssentialsBefore you start buying anything off the rack, take an inventory of what you have now. Do you have a suit? Dark blue jeans? Plain white tee? The essentials. Please tell me you have them. If not, here’s what you need in your wardrobe.Plain white teeSuitActive wear (gym clothes)Work attireCasualPantsJacket (weather appropriate)Plain white teeWhy is this first? Think James Dean or Marlon Brando. That’s enough said right there. The classic white tee can be paired with most pants - dark blue being the best option - converse, and a leather jacket. That simple combination is iconic. There are multiple variations you can pull off with a white tee. Throw a sports coat over instead of a leather jacket. Roll the sleeves up to show off those guns. White tees can be used as an undershirt or on it’s own. Use the white tee when you don’t know what else to wear. Occasion permitting of course.Unfortunately, the simplest off all clothing men can own is missing from their wardrobe. Don’t be that man. Utilize the white tee.SuitHave at least one dark suit. There are occasions when you need a suit - a funeral being one of them. You can also wear a suit casually. How many men do you normally see wearing one? Not many times. Yet, when you do, they stick out. Their presence is known. Modern suits have come a long way from the Mad Men era of the 1960’s. You don’t have to picture yourself dressed as an all business no play lawyer, but instead casual and relaxed. Modern style has changed the way suits are made. “Athleisure” style suits are pairing stylish, fitted joggers with coats. Tuxedos are for formal occasions - weddings are more likely to see them. However, unless you’re the groom, don’t steal the spotlight with your tuxedo. The difference between a suit and tuxedo is the physical appearance of satin. Fancy. Instead, choose a dark colored suit you wear for multiple occasions. Active wearGym clothes stay in the gym or out for a run. If you are not planning on breaking a sweat, then go for casual clothing. Athleisure attire is dominating the style game currently. This trend looks to be a mainstay, so get in on it and ditch the tattered and torn tee shirts and baggy joggers. Not even professional bodybuilders should be rocking the spaghetti strapped muscle tank. If you must have a tank, choose a sleeveless shirt - Old Navy makes one worth looking into. You can be brand loyal - Nike, Adidas, and Puma all make excellent track suits. No need to join a mafia to pull off the track suit either. Athletic pants make the difference in and outside the gym. I suggest Under Armor for athletic pants. Most importantly, keep functionality in mind. If you’re clothing restricts your movement, then change. Pants too tight for squats? Switch to shorts. Better to have correct form then to look good. Also, do you even lift? Seriously? If you do, then you’re like me who has more gym clothes than anything else. It’s all too easy to start blending your casual attire with your gym clothes. Don’t. That’s how you damage your clothes.Work attireWhether you work in an office or on a construction site, dress accordingly. I have worked in both office and construction sites. I can tell you from first-hand experience - yes - clothes matter at the workplace. My trusted brand for working a blue-collar job is Dickies. Well made, durable clothing that I put through the ringer and still last. That’s what you want in work clothes. For them to last.Same can be said for the office - they have to last. Long sleeve button up shirts are a must for the office. Whether you are required to wear one or not. Own a few in solid colors. Outside the office you can pull off these shirts casually. Versatility is key here. You need one for your suit, might as well own a few to mix with your suit jacket. CasualCasual clothes are for after work, the weekends, nights out on the town. These clothes are what you wear when you’re not at work and the occasion isn’t formal. No suit needed. You could wear a suit, but you might want a more laid-back look. This is the time for shorts. They must not be shorter than 2-3 inches from the knee and do not wear athletic shorts unless you’re headed to the gym.Rule of thumb: Short pant legs, short shirt sleeves. This is the part where you buy Polo or short sleeve button ups. The same versatility you find in long sleeve can be found in short sleeve. Solid colors go a long way. PantsSlacks go with your suit and shorts for casual wear. But what about jeans? Dark denim is your friend. Avoid large patterns or designs and baggy, loose fit. Jeans must be fitted but comfortable. Do not let your jeans bunch up at the bottom. That is a terrible look, along with extra wide pant legs. The 90’s called, they want their JNCOs back. Don’t be afraid to cuff the bottom of your pants for a different look.Remember, jeans and other pants break at the top of your shoe -small crease in the pant leg from where the fabric rests on your shoe. No skin is to be seen unless you’re intentionally cuffing your pants. Slacks are a good fit if they rise up to show off your socks when you sit. Otherwise, they are too long. If the bottom of your jeans are tattered from dragging, then they are too long. When you sit and there is fabric bunched up under your waist, your pants waist size is too large. Same goes for when you wear a belt and your pants don’t lay flat. JacketIf you don’t consider yourself a tall man - you know if are not - avoid trench coats. They only make you appear smaller. If you only own a zip-up sweater for all weather occasions, then you should invest in more than one type of jacket.Windbreakers, snow jackets, and raincoats make a difference for the weather and layering. Layering your clothing adds to the overall aesthetic. But layer correctly. Sweaters are not a catch all for weather. Nothing against sweaters, but they are often seen in public when the weather may be better suited for a raincoat. It’s best to own multiple jackets. Not just a sweater. ?A pet peeve of mine is seeing men not wearing a coat when it’s raining. It’s just as atrocious when a man wears a jacket and shorts. How can your torso be cold, but your legs are hot? What to avoidThese recommendations should get you started towards dressing better. However, there are clothes you should avoid. The first things in your closet to go are the graphic tees. Sorry. But graphic tees are reserved for the men that don’t care about how they look. Bold statement - I know - but have you ever noticed how men that wear graphic tees usually don’t look stylish wearing them. Darth Vader and ill-fitted cargo pants are a good look for teens without much money. Men must reserve the graphic tees for lazy days around the house. Concert tees are appropriate at concerts. Sports jerseys for sporting events. The point is to dress like a man. Not a teen. Once you get the rules down, then break them. Till then, solid colors only. Avoid trendsAccording to an article written for GQ, socks and sandals are cool now. This a trend that should never exist. Along with those JNCOs you’re still holding onto. Trends come and go. If you know you won’t be keeping up with today’s fashion trends, then avoid them all together. Nothing wrong with that. Stick with the classics and you won’t ever be out of style. Practice minimalism with your wardrobe at first and add one piece at a time. Strive for each piece you add to compliment another. Find a tailorNothing off the rack will fit perfect. To instantly improve your style today, go find a tailor. You can have all the recommended essentials, but if they don’t fit correctly it won’t matter. Fit is just as important as the piece itself. Your tailor will take your measurements and from there you can go shop. Make it habit to bring those clothes back to your tailor to have them adjusted. has an article about the common prices for alterations. Hemming pants on average is between $10 and $25 and depends on your location. Alterations are worth the cost. Dress to impressNow that you have your perfectly fitted wardrobe, wear them accordingly. Keep your graphic tees for when you’re around the house. If you plan on going out, then dress up. This is important for the single man. Dress to impress. You don’t know who’s out there. And you would hate to meet your soulmate wearing a stained, wrinkled, and hole ridden shirt. What does your appearance say about you? Laid back or lazy? There’s a difference between casual and just rolled out of bed. With the essentials you won’t have to worry about that. You will have clothes for any occasion. Once you have the basics down, then you can begin to experiment with different styles. Honestly, the aim of the guide is to break the habit most men have - and that is dressing like an awkward teen and more like a man with style. There’s something to be said about the man that takes pride in his appearance. He’s not vain but rather sophisticated. ................
