A new Signature trim and a newly available turbo engine raise this crossover to a higher level.

Mazda is raising the bar for its popular CX-5 crossover, although it's already a 10Best winner in our book. For 2019, the CX-5 is adding a new, more luxurious trim level and an optional turbocharged four-cylinder engine, along with several new convenience features and a revised chassis that now includes Mazda's updated G-Vectoring Control Plus.

The new engine is the biggest change, and it's the same turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder found in the Mazda CX-9 three-row crossover and the Mazda 6 mid-size sedan. In the CX-5, it makes 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque (that's if you use premium fuel; as with those other models, Mazda quotes a lower output of 227 hp on regular gasoline). It'll be available on higher trim levels paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and we presume it will be available as both front- and all-wheel drive. The base naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine should carry over into 2019 without any changes.

Handling enhancements are thanks to the updated G-Vectoring Control Plus system. We've detailed the standard system's benefits before, but the "Plus" moniker signifies a new feature that applies braking to the outside front wheel when the driver straightens the wheel which, according to Mazda, improves stability. Mazda also says it has retuned the suspension for a smoother ride and changed the steering geometry.

Now sitting at the top of the CX-5 lineup is the Signature trim level, which adds all manner of luxurious appointments including brown leather upholstery, extra bits of wood and chrome trim inside, ambient lighting, a black headliner, and a frameless

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now available for the CX-5's 7.0-inch touchscreen display, although it's not clear if it will be standard or optional. Mazda will release more information about the CX-5, including pricing, as the car prepares to go on sale before the end of this year.

And, yes, if you were wondering, we are still waiting to hear more information about the CX-5 diesel. Mazda is not talking about this new engine option yet, but we do have EPA ratings, suggesting that there's still hope yet.

1) Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

2) Beat butter, sugar, peanut butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt together in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Stir flour and baking soda into creamed butter mixture until well incorporated.

3) Roll dough into 36 balls. Flatten each ball and shape into an upside-down triangle. Press two pretzels into the two top corners of each triangle for the antlers. Press two chocolate chips into the center of each triangle for the eyes, and one chocolate chip or M&M on the bottom of the triangle for the nose. Arrange cookies on baking sheets.

4) Bake in the preheated oven until cookies are golden brown, 10 to 15 minutes. _________________________________

SPREADING THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT Every year, we at Schwartz try to spread some Christmas cheer to needy children in the area. This year, we sponsored children from our local YMCA. We put out a call to all employees and we had an overwhelming response. We thank all the employees who participated and for making a child's Christmas a bit better this year!
