Lancers Begin Playoffs With A Bang As Larkin Breaks GCL RecordThey’re back! Friday night the defending state champions gave every indication that they would like to make it two state titles in a row. La Salle Lancers [9-2] grounded the Vandalia Butler Aviators [7-4], in round one of the Ohio High School Playoffs, 52-14. Jeremy Larkin put on quite a show. Two hundred and forty-five yards would be a good two-game total for a running back. Larkin rushed for 245 in the first half.The Aviators, coached by Greg Bush, came into the game averaging 33 points a game. This season, senior quarterback Chandler Craine had passed for 1,954 yards and 20 touchdowns. The stout Lancer defense held Butler to one touchdown until late in the game when the Aviators scored a second TD against the Lancer second team.It was 58 degrees at game time, at Lancer Stadium, under cloudy skies. Butler won the opening toss and decided to receive. They punted on their first two possessions. On La Salle’s second possession, Larkin carried the ball three times for 75 yards and a 4-yard TD. The TD broke the GCL record for most TD’s scored in a career. The first quarter would end with the Lancers ahead 7-0.In the second quarter Vandalia would answer with a 9-play, 80-yard drive to even the score at 7-7. The scoring play was a 12-yard pass from Chandler Craine to Noah Ballard.The Lancers would go on in the second quarter to bury the Aviators, scoring five times. It started with La Salle’s first possession. After a 39-yard kickoff return by Jarell White and an Aviator penalty, the Lancers took possession on the Aviator 25 yard line. On the first play of the series, Larkin darted 25 yards his second TD. La Salle led 14-7.On the next possession it was Jarell White’s turn to score, carrying the ball the final 16 yards for the TD.Less than a minute later, Kyle Farwick supplied the knockout punch, recovering a fumble in the end zone to give La Salle a 28-7 lead. Before the half, DrueChrisman would kick a 28-yard field goal and Jeremy Larkin would run for his third touchdown of the half on a 45-yard sprint to give the Lancers an insurmountable lead of 38-7.At the half, La Salle had 301 total yards to Butler’s 195. The Lancers had 285 rushing yards to the Aviators’ 39. Larkin had 245 yards rushing, 7 receiving and three touchdowns. John Wilcox and Hayden Jester had 5.5 and 5 tackles respectively.The second half started using running time. La Salle would score two touchdowns in the second half to the Aviators’ one. Four minutes into the third quarter, Larkin was finished for the night, as were most of the Lancer starters.The final score was La Salle 52, Vandalia Butler 14. Jeremy Larkin finished his evening with 303 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Christi Turner added 66 rushing yards.The 9-2 Lancers are tied for the second best record in school history. La Salle plays Lima Senior, who won their first playoff game in overtime against Miamisburg. Lima Senior [9-2] enters the La Salle game averaging 43.5 points a game.Lancer Tournament NotesCongratulations to punter Drue Chrisman, offensive lineman Luke Doerger, linebacker Hayden Jester, running back Jeremy Larkin, offensive lineman Thayer Munford, defensive back Jarell White and defensive lineman John Wilcox for being chosen 1st team All-GCL.According to the OHSAA Football website, the high school football playoffs began in 1972 with 3 divisions and 12 playoff qualifiers in the entire state. Today there are seven divisions and 224 playoff qualifiers. There are 715 Ohio high schools playing football. There are 72 schools in division I. Divisions II-VII average 108 schools. About 31% of the schools qualify for the tournament.Only 70 high schools have never made the playoffs. Newark Catholic has made the playoffs 34 times. Moeller has made the playoffs 33 times, not making it this year. Coldwater has the longest active qualifying streak at 19. Newark has the most playoff wins at 69. Locally, Moeller leads with 49. Cleveland St. Ignatius has the most state championships with 11. Moeller has 9.La Salle finished the regular season ranked #2 in the state behind Perrysburg who ended up 10-0. The Midwest Athletic Conference has won the state championship 33 times. The GCL is second with 21 titles. ................
