Welcome to 6th Grade Intensive Reading!

I am excited to have your child in my class this year and look forward to a fun and unique school year. The focus of this course is to support your child in their success on the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) in English Language Arts and to help them develop their skills in reading, writing, critical thinking, and analysis.

This syllabus is a breakdown of the rules and policies that your child will have to follow in class, whether through brick and mortar or Remote Learning Instruction (RLI). It is important for parents and students to sit down together to read and discuss the information provided. The policies bellow will be explained to your child in class as well.

CLASSROOM RULES & PROCEDURES:

In order to succeed in this class, each student should know what is expected of them.

The following are responsibilities that will guarantee a great school year, whether physically in the building or in RLI:

• Come to class regularly and on time.

• Complete and turn in assignments on time.

• Have materials readily available.

• Come to class, whether physically or in RLI, in full uniform. Mater Bay’s uniform policy can be found on the school website and in the parent/ student handbook.

• Raise your hand and be acknowledged prior to speaking.

• Treat teacher and fellow students with respect.

• Turn off and put away all electronics not provided by the school or teacher.

• Store away all food or drinks (except water) in your backpack as they are not allowed to be consumed in the classroom or during online instruction.

REMOTE LEARNING INSTRUCTION (RLI):

Student Support/ Office Hours for students only are from 1:55 – 2:30pm daily.

In order to be successful while in RLI, each student is expected to follow the rules and procedures stated above. In addition, the following tips will help your child in the transition to online learning:

• Find a quiet workspace and make sure all devices are completely charged before class begins. Headphones are encouraged.

• Mute your cell phone and turn off other devices such as the TV, other computers, etc.

• Make sure your background is appropriate and free of distractions. Backgrounds must be blue, orange, or the Mater Bay design designated by the school.

• Take care of your personal needs before sitting down for class. If you need to take a restroom break during a live session, do so quickly.

• Refrain from consuming food during class. Drinks are allowed.

• Follow norms for communication during live lessons or when sharing ideas on Google Classroom:

o Take turns speaking/ writing.

o Treat each other with kindness and respect when speaking or writing.

o Mute your audio when not speaking.

o Speak slowly and at an appropriate tone to be heard.

• If you cannot attend a session, let your teacher know ahead of time and visit office hours if possible.

• If absent or tardy, the same school policies apply (see below).

• Complete your work to the best of your ability. If you have questions, ask your teacher during class (you are probably not the only one with the question!) or during office hours.

• All school rules and discipline policies are still applicable in RLI (see below).

GOOGLE CLASSROOM:

Google Classroom will be utilized for assignments, assessments, and collaboration between students. All students must follow the instructions placed in their teacher’s Mater Bay website to access Google Classroom.

TARDIES:

When the bell rings, any student who is not inside of the classroom (or on Zoom) in their assigned seat will be marked tardy unexcused. The same rule applies to RLI, any student not logged into the live session on time will be marked tardy.

ABSENCES:

If you miss school for an excused reason, you must obtain a pass from the main office and make sure that it is signed by all of your teachers. Once that official pass is received, you will be expected to catch up on all assignments missed while you were out. A “Z” will appear on the grade book until I have received the assignment. Students have 48 hours (or two school days) from the time they return to school from their absence to “excuse” it with the main office. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence. In this case, students will NOT be allowed to make up the work.

*Please refer to the Parent Contract for information on the school’s policies regarding “excused” and “unexcused” absences and tardies.

UNEXCUSED LATE WORK:

If a student fails to turn in homework/ classwork on time, the assignment will be entered as a “Z” in the gradebook. I will allow 48 hours (or until next class period) after the original due date for the assignment to be submitted for a lower grade.

HOME LEARNING:

When assigned the class prior, homework is due at the beginning of the following class period.
