OverviewThe 2020 Census is fast-approaching and the City of Salina is already preparing to ensure a successful 2020 Census enumeration. The U.S. Constitution requires an “actual enumeration” or count of every person living in the county each decade and the U.S. Commerce Department’s Census Bureau is responsible for conduction the census. However, the federal government cannot do it alone and relies on states, cities, and municipalities like Salina to ensure each and every resident is accurately counted.Note: All responses to Census Bureau surveys and censuses are confidential and protected under Title 13 of the U.S. Code. Under this law, the Census Bureau is required to keep respondent information confidential.The Importance Of The 2020 Census For Our CommunityThe 2020 Census will be critically important to Salina for several reasons:The Census determines the number of representatives Kansas receives in the U.S. House of Representatives after apportionment. It is critical for Salina’s population to be accurately reflected in Kansas’s redistricting efforts after the 2020 Census. Census results help decide how more than $675 billion in annual federal spending is distributed to state and local governments, including Salina.Forecasting future transportation and housing needs for all segments of the population, including housing assistance and rehabilitation loans.Assisting governments in planning and implementing programs, services, and emergency response. Example, City of Salina staff and government officials depend on accurate census data in making development decisions about future improvements within the community.Publishing economic and statistical reports about the U.S. and its people that businesses and employers can use to plan job growth and economic development.Important Census 2020 ChangesThe Census is building a more accurate address list and automating field operations – all while keeping your information confidential and safe.For the first time ever, people will be able to respond online, by phone, or by mail. The Census will use date that the public has already provided to cut down on in-person follow up visits to nonresponding plete Count Committee The Complete Count Committee (CCC) is a volunteer committee established by the local governing body (City Commission) that typically includes a cross section of community leaders, including representatives from governmental agencies, education, business, religious organizations, community agencies, minority organizations and the media. The committee is charged with developing and implementing a 2020 Census outreach, promotion, recruiting, and enumeration assistance plan of action designed to target and address the needs of the community. Having a diverse cross section of community leaders is important in order to engage the entire Salina community and ensure the most accurate Census count possible.
