ON THE COVER:
STATE DOG! This photo of three Seeing Eye puppies, with the American flag flying in the background, was taken on the Washington Valley campus of The Seeing Eye. Photo by Michelle Barlak.
In January 2020, the Seeing Eye® dog became the official State Dog of New Jersey! Read all about it in “Letter from the Officers.”
People who are blind or visually impaired come from across the United States and Canada to The Seeing Eye campus in Morristown, New Jersey, to learn how to work with and care for our extraordinary dogs. These graduates – students, retirees, attorneys, authors, homemakers, factory workers – are now pursuing their goals with independence, dignity, and self-confidence. We hope you enjoy some of their stories contained throughout this report.
Letter from the President and CEO of The Seeing Eye
This letter is accompanied by a photo of Glenn D. Hoagland, President & CEO of The Seeing Eye, with a golden retriever puppy.
This was a year unlike any other. The Seeing Eye, and every other nonprofit organization, was tested. Thanks to your generous support, The Seeing Eye has emerged from this difficult year stronger than ever, and prepared to meet the continuing demand for our remarkable Seeing Eye® dogs in 2021 and beyond.
In March, we were forced to move to a reduced operations mode and our classes were suspended for five months in accordance with New Jersey’s statewide shutdown order. All of us at The Seeing Eye remained active, with many staff members working from home. Our Admissions Department processed applications from those seeking a place in a future class. Staff at our Breeding Station continued to work full time through the shutdown, overseeing the births of 12 litters. Instructors and Puppy Development Area Coordinators worked together to place with their puppy raisers the 190 Seeing Eye® puppies born during reduced operations mode.
At The Seeing Eye’s Washington Valley kennels, our Instruction & Training, Kennel, and Puppy Development staff sought temporary foster homes for the 203 dogs that, at the start of limited operations, were living on our campus and in varying stages of training. Most of the fostered dogs found homes with puppy raisers; a few went home with staff, and even a couple of Trustees. We could not be more grateful for the overwhelming response to our request for foster families. By April, all of our dogs were off campus. Thanks to these dedicated volunteers, not only were we able to ensure that every dog was lovingly looked after, but we also were able to reduce the risk of COVID-19 exposure for kennel and clinic staff. Our dogs remained healthy, happy, and ready for training as soon as we could safely resume.
Staff and volunteers went the extra mile during limited operations. Puppy Development staff maintained their support of our hundreds of Puppy Raising Families. The Puppy Raisers, accustomed to socializing their Seeing Eye puppies at club meetings, held those meetings outdoors or virtually. Veterinary staff held regular hours every week to provide care for our dogs and puppies, as needed, and remained in daily communication with Puppy Development area coordinators and with the regular veterinarians of puppies. Instructors remained in touch with our graduates, assisting them with any issues that arose using virtual technologies, and helped with the transportation of dogs to foster families. Our Food Service and Housekeeping team does daily deep cleaning and has adapted food service methods for safe service. Our Information Technology team worked to ensure our virtual connections for remote workflow.
All of these coordinated efforts and careful attention to the many details help achieve our mission and purpose and sustain The Seeing Eye’s place as a leader. Everyone perseveres because we knew that the people The Seeing Eye serves still need us and we are committed to being there for them, just as we have been since 1929.
Some key statistics from Fiscal Year 2020:
• Despite the pandemic’s five-month interruption of normal classes, The Seeing Eye served 136 individuals who were blind or visually impaired; and as of September 30, 2020, there were 1,612 active Seeing Eye graduates, mostly in the United States and Canada. We accepted 226 candidates to our program in FY20. When it was safe to do so, Seeing Eye instructors visited 334 graduates and new applicants in 35 states; and 17 Canadian graduates in two provinces for a total of 351 visits.
• At our Breeding Station in Chester, 340 puppies were whelped from 47 litters: 12 German shepherd litters, 14 Labrador retriever litters, eight golden retriever litters, and 13 Labrador/golden retriever cross litters. That grand total is thanks to adaptations and hard work from our Canine Medicine leadership and staff during The Seeing Eye’s limited operations. Breeding Station volunteers were asked to stay home for the safety of all; and Chester employees cared for every dog and puppy there. At the time we moved to reduced operations, we had more than 75 puppies at the Breeding Station plus another 12 female dogs due to whelp before the end of May. This is why, as noted earlier, the Breeding Station remained open and in full operations. However, to avoid an overflow of dogs, we temporarily stopped breeding dogs in April. On July 11, when the last of the puppies were old enough to leave our facility and be placed with Puppy Raisers, our Breeding Station was without puppies for the first time in its history. Staff remained busy, however, since we still had 60 adult breeding dogs requiring monitoring, socialization, exercise and care. Breeding recommenced in mid-August.
• Successfully training dogs to work as Seeing Eye guides is the keystone of our service. In the last full fiscal year of normal operations, the success rate for puppies given to Puppy Raisers that became guides or entered our Breeding Program was approximately 60 percent. The success rate for dogs that returned to campus for training from their Puppy Raising families and graduated from the program was approximately 70 percent. As of September 30, 2020, there were 600 Puppy Raisers providing foster homes for young Seeing Eye® puppies in our Puppy Development Program in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, one county in Maryland, and Warwick, New York. During the year, Puppy Raising Families returned 270 dogs to The Seeing Eye for the four-month formal training and as of the last day of the fiscal year. There are 34 new Puppy Raising Families on the waiting list to raise a puppy.
We could not accomplish all that we do without you, our generous supporters. Your meaningful gifts of talent, time, and treasure have kept our organization thriving through thick and thin. Every Seeing Eye team that graduates walks with confidence, independence, and dignity, thanks to you.
From all of us here at The Seeing Eye, thank you!
Sincerely,
Glenn D. Hoagland

Letter from the Officers of The Seeing Eye
This letter is accompanied by photos of the Officers of The Seeing Eye: Thomas J. Duffy, Chairman; Ari Benacerraf, Vice Chair; Margaret E. Howard, Vice Chair; and Glenn Hoagland, President & CEO.
Dear Friends:
Of all the historic events that happened last year, let’s pause to remember one that did not involve politics or social distancing: In 2020, the Seeing Eye dog was named the official state dog of New Jersey!
The bill was introduced by New Jersey State Senator Anthony R. Bucco, a long-time friend of The Seeing Eye. After his death, the cause was taken up by his successor, and son, State Senator Anthony M. Bucco. The bill also was supported by U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey. It passed the Assembly and the Senate with unanimous support, and was signed into law by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy on January 21, 2020.
We have three breeds here at The Seeing Eye – German shepherds, golden retrievers, and Labrador retrievers – as well as Labrador/golden retriever crosses. We couldn’t play favorites, so rather than designating one of the four to represent the state dog, we asked that the state dog be all Seeing Eye dogs. The legislators and Governor agreed.
Although we were founded in Nashville, Tennessee, we have made New Jersey our home since 1931. More than 17,500 Seeing Eye teams have been produced in New Jersey, first in Whippany and then in our current home in Morristown. Every Seeing Eye dog is trained in New Jersey, and each year we bring people from across the United States and Canada to the Garden State to learn how to care for and work with these amazing dogs.
This state is a great learning environment for our dogs. The state’s climate has all four seasons, so they’re prepared to face whatever weather they will encounter, from a snowy day in Canada to a balmy one in Puerto Rico and everywhere in between. Our campus is in the middle of bucolic Morris County with its rolling hills, horse farms, and nature trails, but every day we work in the heart of Morristown anchored by our Downtown Training Center, and we’re close enough to New York City that the dogs can experience subways, crowded sidewalks, and Times Square.
And when the training is complete and our graduates head home, they bring a four-legged Jersey boy or Jersey girl home with them.
As former Governor and current Seeing Eye Trustee Thomas Kean once said, Seeing Eye dogs are New Jersey’s cutest export!
Your support makes it all possible. Thank you for being on our team.

Graduate Stories
Interspersed throughout this annual report are stories from people who graduated from The Seeing Eye in Fiscal Year 2020. Each story is accompanied by a photo of the graduate and his or her Seeing Eye dog.
Jason and Link
Jason Valley graduated from The Seeing Eye with his first Seeing Eye dog, a German shepherd named Link, in our second class of Fiscal Year 2020, in November 2019.
“Quarantine life has us staying close to home, as is a brutal New Hampshire winter,” said Jason, who lives in Concord. “With two teens in the home on remote learning, I find I spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking or cleaning up from a meal. Link is always faithfully by my side watching me do my work in the home.”
Jason said he and Link traveled often this winter. “Many of our trips were to Boston Children’s Hospital with a friend who is a single mother of two,” he said. “Link and I would go and stay with one child while the other was in an appointment with mom and the doctor. The 8-year-old would read stories to Link in the waiting room.”
Jason says he sometimes plays bingo in a large hall. The greatest compliment, he says, is when people are surprised a dog was quietly sitting at his feet all evening!
When Jason isn’t working, he and Link enjoy shopping, going to the beach, hiking in state parks, and going to amusement parks – roller coasters especially! While Jason is riding, Link sits with friends and watches.
Jen and Darwyn
Jen Armbruster attended the March class, our final one before taking a five-month hiatus from bringing students to campus. Jen is the Inclusive Rec & Fitness Center Coordinator at Portland State University in Oregon, and a seven-time Paralympian, winning one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals for Team USA in goalball. She was matched with her fifth Seeing Eye dog, Darwyn, a German shepherd.
“Darwyn has handled the pandemic very well and I’ve learned all sorts of new things about my neighborhood. We just walk to walk and see what we find,” said Jen, who has two sons. “Our boys are still in comprehensive distance learning until at least mid-April, so I’m still working full time and assisting with the school stuff. Our new reality has tested us a bit but we try and find the silver lining!”
Rosemary and Kato
Rosemary Martin came to The Seeing Eye in February to be matched with her third Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador retriever named Kato. Rosemary is a contract specialist for a federal agency and works on a military base in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Kato fits right in.
“Kato is built like a tank and his tail waves like a flagpole,” she said. “He often makes a quick happy squeaky sound when we’re working, and he’s exuberant in everything he does, both in and out of harness.”
She said they only had about three weeks together at home before COVID-19 restrictions went into effect. “We were limited to neighborhood walks throughout Philadelphia and outdoor activities. Despite all of this, Kato has remained steadfast in his work, and has quickly settled into our large family; he has even gained 16 new friends in my young nieces and nephews. Kato Potato is definitely the best part of 2020!”
Sharon and Echo
The Rev. Sharon Ballantyne, Ph.D., was matched with Echo, her fifth Seeing Eye dog. After graduation, they returned to Canada, where Sharon serves a rural pastoral charge in the United Church of Canada. “We hit the ground running,” Sharon said. “Echo is sensitive, caring, eager and keen to please. She is loved by all wherever she goes.”
Through COVID, Echo is proving adaptable to all of life's slowed down needs.
“As we pivoted to all things virtual, Echo's patience both offers and teaches blessings. Six months less two days having been out of the church building, Echo efficiently guided me to the pulpit for worship. Echo did not care about masks, or how the people were seated, not about Plexiglas shields and all the protocols. She just wagged her tail happily at the return of dear friends to our space.”
Tiffany and Ginger
Tiffany Baylor came to The Seeing Eye in March and graduated with the last class before we stopped bringing students to campus in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Tiffany, the coordinator for the Florida Coordinating Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, is shown in her office wearing a face mask with Ginger, a German shepherd, on a dog bed in the background.
“I have had progressive vision loss for quite some time. When I began to lose my hearing as well, I realized how much I depended on it to accommodate for my waning vision,” she said. “I noticed that I began limiting my activities outside of my home because I was ‘becoming blind’ all over again. With Ginger, I began to regain the confidence that I had lost because there was a safety net, if you will, to call me on any possible misreadings of my environment. With Ginger, I know there is a backup there to alert me if I make a miscalculation. And she is very good at encouragement – she believes in me!”
Trish and Dawson
Patricia “Trish” Ebel attended the August class, the first after we stopped bringing students to class in March. She graduated in September, the final class of the FY20 fiscal year, with a German shepherd named Dawson. Trish is wearing a colorful dress and smiling as she stands next to Dawson.
“The entire experience while at The Seeing Eye was wonderful,” Trish said. “The staff went above and beyond and met all my expectations and more. The staff did everything they could to keep everything clean and all of us safe. While I was there, for those 16 days, I did not even think of COVID. For the first time in six months, it was not even on my mind!”

This story has eight photos.
The first photo is the statue of Morris Frank and Buddy on the Morristown Green. Morris is wearing a facemask!
The second photo is of a German shepherd puppy, nearly an adult, sitting on a lawn. Behind him is a toddler, wrapping his arms around the dog to hug her. The caption reads: Holle, a German shepherd puppy, gets a hug from puppy raiser Carolyn Armbruster’s grandson Carter. Photo courtesy of Carolyn Armbruster.
The third photo shows a woman, wearing a mask, holding a golden retriever puppy on a leash. At least six feet behind her, sitting in a chair and wearing a mask, is a waving Santa Claus. The caption reads: Seeing Eye Puppy Raiser Ellen Russell with Winslow, a male golden retriever, and a socially distanced Santa Claus. Photo courtesy of Ellen Russell.
The fourth photo shows a woman, wearing a mask, “nose to nose” with a seven-week-old yellow Labrador retriever puppy. The caption reads: Darby, a yellow Labrador retriever puppy, meets his puppy raiser, Melissa Oliver. Photo by Gary Smolyak.
The fifth photo shows three Seeing Eye instructors, all wearing masks. The instructor in the lead is wearing a blindfold and being guided across a street by a golden retriever in harness. The other two instructors are walking behind her as they observe her and the dog. The caption reads: Senior Manager of Training and Instruction Jeff McMullen, left, observes Apprentice Instructor Alexis Wisniewski-Chesson and Associate Instructor Julie Siragusa during a street crossing. Julie, under blindfold, is being guided by a golden retriever in training. Photo by Hillary Alpert.
The sixth photo is a “selfie” of a Seeing Eye instructor wearing a mask as her Seeing Eye dog in training, a black Labrador retriever, looks at her instead of the camera. The caption reads: Instructor Jane Schneiderman, wearing a mask and a winter hat, gets a close look from Marcia, a black Labrador retriever. Photo courtesy of Jane Schneiderman.
The seventh photo is an instructor wearing a mask as she crouches next to a German shepherd. The caption reads: Seeing Eye Instructor Ruthanne Dewey with a German shepherd in training. Photo courtesy of Ruthanne Dewey.
The final photo shows a Seeing Eye instructor, wearing an apron over her clothing, in the bathing room in the kennel at The Seeing Eye with a very wet golden retriever. The caption reads: Seeing Eye Instructor Nicole Murray gives a bath to a golden retriever in training. Photo courtesy of Nicole Murray.
As we all did, The Seeing Eye had to quickly adapt to a world changed by COVID-19.
The Seeing Eye, in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines, stopped holding classes in March, and our dogs in training we re-homed with puppy raisers, staff volunteers, and even Trustees. But with an eye toward reopening in the fall, we brought dogs back to campus in the summer to resume their training. Instructors wore face masks and kept their distance from other pedestrians. Classes resumed August 24.
We flexed our education model by lowering our class size and teaching ratio so that one instructor had only two students at a time, rather than the usual four, for on-campus classes. Another change was to bring new students back home and finish their training with them there. We are also providing more home training, in response to requests from students with health concerns.
To ensure the health of both our students and staff, we established many new safety protocols per CDC recommendations. Employees have been asked to reduce travel to “hot spot” areas. Whenever possible, staffers now rotate shifts. Mask wearing, hand washing, social distancing, daily temperature checks, improved indoor air exchange and purification, and other precautions while on campus ensure that we are in compliance with public health best practices. Some other employees continue to work remotely, to ensure lower densities and safe distancing in work spaces.
We also launched a public awareness campaign during the pandemic to spread the word that guide dogs aren’t trained to observe social distance. If you see a Seeing Eye team in action, please try to stay at least six feet away to avoid spreading the coronavirus. Our Facebook followers shared this infographic more than 1,500 times, helping it reach more than 116,000 people. The campaign received national press attention, including an article in The Washington Post, a post on , and a segment on CBS News that aired in more than 100 markets. For more information about how you can help keep guide dog teams safe, visit .
Seeing Eye puppy raisers also dealt with the restrictions. We ask our puppy raisers to socialize their dogs, introducing them to new people and new places, and exposing them to as many different environments and experiences as possible. An even more difficult task in 2020!
“The pandemic has surely made for challenges never before encountered in puppy raising,” said Carolyn Armbruster, who is currently raising Holle, a German shepherd. Holle is the 10th puppy, and seventh shepherd, that she has raised for The Seeing Eye. “Usually New York City at Christmas is a test on how well the puppy handles the thousands of people around. This year we were escorted to the Christmas Tree five days before Christmas, and there were no people around! I have worked hard to make sure Holle has enjoyed being a puppy, but also has been exposed to everything other than crowds.”
We’re keeping our paws crossed that restrictions will ease with increased distribution of vaccinations in 2021!

Graduate Society: Desi and Waze
This story has a phot of a Seeing Eye graduate with a German shepherd on a hiking trail.
Destene “Desi” Noller of Phoenix, Arizona, was matched in February 2020 with a German shepherd named Waze, her first Seeing Eye dog. The photo shows Desi and Waze, in harness, standing on the side of a dirt road with a brush-covered hill behind them. Next to them are bright yellow wildflowers. “This picture was taken while we were hiking the Apache Wash Loop,” Desi said. “Waze has guided me through all the stress of this pandemic! The day before yesterday I got my second dose of the vaccination, and I’m hoping that after the two weeks they recommend, we will be able to start up much more of our lives as they were before!”

Half Century Club: David and Speedwell
This story has a photo of a Seeing Eye graduate smiling as he stands alongside a golden retriever in harness.
On March 20, 1969, U.S. Army 1st Lt. David Szumowski was commanding a tank platoon assaulting a well-defended position near Dau Tieng in Vietnam. His tank took a direct hit from a rocket-propelled grenade, with shrapnel hitting him in the face. Instantly blinded, Lt. Szumowski continued commanding the assault, with the help of his crewmates and a helicopter pilot overhead reporting enemy positions to him. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star with “V” device and oak leaf cluster, and a Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars.
In November 1969, just two months after being discharged from the Army, David came to The Seeing Eye to be matched with his first Seeing Eye dog. Fifty years later, he is now working with his sixth dog, a golden retriever named Speedwell. David is now retired after working as a benefits counselor for the Department of Veterans Affairs, executive director of the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program, an attorney, and a Superior Court judge in San Diego.

The Dinner Party
This story has the logo of the Dinner Party, which is a white dog bone outlined in a green line that gradually turns to yellow, then orange, then red, then purple. The words “The Dinner Party” are written inside the bone; above it reads “5th Annual” and below the bone reads “to benefit The Seeing Eye.”
Unfortunately, some of our fundraising events scheduled for 2020 had to be cancelled, but one was re-imagined as a virtual event: our fifth annual gala, called The Dinner Party.
The Dinner Party was initially scheduled for May 5. As a coincidence, that day there was a nationwide fundraising event called #GivingTuesdayNow. We decided to hold the Dinner Party that night as a virtual event, and thanks to our generous donors, we raised nearly $60,000!
“Even in altered formats, we believe that fundraising events are vital, not only because they generate revenues for our mission, but also because they build awareness of our organization and educate the public about blindness issues,” Seeing Eye President & CEO Glenn Hoagland said.

NASDAQ Closing Bell
This story has a photo of more than 30 Seeing Eye staff members, Trustees, and puppy raisers and eight dogs standing on Times Square in New York City. Behind them is a seven-story high video display with the words “The Seeing Eye: January 27, 2020”, with The Seeing Eye’s logo. The caption reads: Seeing Eye staff, trustees, and supporters (and dogs!) in front of NASDAQ MarketSite at Times Square in New York City after the closing ceremony on January 27, 2020. Photo by Chris Marksbury.
The Seeing Eye “rang out” the end of our 90th anniversary year by ringing the closing bell at NASDAQ MarketSite in New York City on January 27, 2020. Almost exactly a year earlier, on January 28, 2019, The Seeing Eye “rang in” the anniversary year the same way, at NASDAQ. The event was broadcast live on several financial networks as well as on NASDAQ’s seven-story video display on Times Square.
The photo shows Seeing Eye staff and Trustees in front of the NASDAQ video display on Times Square, with Seeing Eye dogs, dogs in training, and puppies. In the center of the photo, holding a golden retriever puppy, is New Jersey Senator Anthony M. Bucco. Flanking him are Seeing Eye Board of Trustees Chair Tom Duffy, left, and Seeing Eye President & CEO Glenn Hoagland.
You can watch a video of the event at nasdaq.

Online Auction
This story has a photo of a black Labrador retriever puppy wearing a pearl necklace.
Early in the pandemic, we briefly considered cancelling our annual online auction. Our donors, graduates, and puppy raisers convinced us otherwise. What a great decision: The auction raised more than $97,000 for us!
Up for bid were numerous items donated by Seeing Eye supporters, plus unique experiences like spending a day with a (socially distanced) Seeing Eye instructor, a behind-the-scenes tour of the Columbus Zoo, and handmade quilts and other crafts… including a necklace of freshwater pearls with watermelon tourmaline teardrops. The necklace was photographed while being worn by Jade, a black Labrador retriever in our Seeing Eye Puppy Raising program. The necklace was made and donated by Seeing Eye supporter Ruth Tatz.
This year’s online auction will be held April 19 through April 29. For more information, go to seeingeye.

Fundraising in Florida
This story has a photo of a large group standing next to a fountain, with a pool in the background and the ocean in the distance. There are palm trees and a bright blue sky. The caption reads: Standing, from left: Melissa Greig, Glenn Hoagland, Seeing Eye graduate Alex Elman with her Seeing Eye dog, a chocolate Labrador/golden retriever cross named Izmir, Seeing Eye Trustee David Hertz, Sharyl Hertz, and Elise Ross with her retired Seeing Eye breeder, a golden retriever named Ritz. Front row: Seeing Eye staff members Kristen DeMarco, with a black Labrador retriever puppy named DeMarco, and Kristin Motta with a golden retriever puppy named Carson.
In early March, just before COVID-19 upended 2020, Seeing Eye trustees Anthony J. DeCarlo, V.M.D., and David Hertz and his wife, Sharyl, held events for potential Seeing Eye supporters in Florida.
At each event, guests met Seeing Eye puppies and retired Seeing Eye breeder Ritz, a golden retriever. Also in attendance were Seeing Eye graduates Alex Elman with her Seeing Eye dog, a chocolate Labrador/golden retriever cross named Izmir, and Donna Brennan with her Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador retriever named Jennifer. Seeing Eye Instructor Kristen DeMarco and Puppy Development Area Coordinator Kristin Motta were there with President & CEO Glenn Hoagland and his wife, Melissa Greig. And of course, puppies! DeMarco, a black Labrador retriever puppy named after the instructor, and Carson, a golden retriever puppy, were there to greet the guests.

Veterinary Recognition Awards
Each year, The Seeing Eye receives nominations from our graduates and puppy raisers for our Veterinary Recognition Awards. These veterinarians, and many others who remain unnamed, have gone “above and beyond” as they provided extraordinary service and care to Seeing Eye dogs in all stages of their lives. Our puppies, our dogs-in-training, and the Seeing Eye dogs working with their owners all benefit greatly from the generosity of these veterinarians and their staffs.
This year, The Seeing Eye recognizes Leslie Plowe, D.V.M., and her staff at Bevlab Animal Hospital in Blue Island, Illinois.
Back Cover
On the back cover is a photo of three dogs looking out from a stone archway in a building: An older German shepherd, an older yellow Labrador/golden retriever cross, and a very young golden retriever. The caption reads: Seeing Eye puppies on a visit to the New Jersey Botanical Gardens in Ringwood. From left: Granger, a German shepherd; Skipper, a yellow Labrador/golden retriever cross; and Vesper, a golden retriever. Photo by Seeing Eye puppy raiser Suzanne Boland.
