Whilst the Flu vaccination won’t protect you from COVID-19, it will reduce your risk of getting influenza (Flu) 4769485741997500The 2020-2021 Rheumatology Flu Campaign also reminds people that if you get influenza it will lower your immunity, making you more susceptible to other illnesses including COVID-19. Both flu and COVID-19 can cause severe illness, including pneumonia. If you are unable to use the online service, please call NHS 111.Face Masks- From 15 June 2020 all visitors and outpatients will be required to wear a face covering at all times while at the hospital. Please plan ahead and bring one with you.Face Shield -If you are unable to wear a face mask, you will be offered a Face Screen which must also be which must be warn at all times during your Hospital visit- please keep the face shield for future day case admissions, after each visit please clean the shield. To avoid creating surface scratches, submerge the face shield in warm water to dislodge particulate matter. Adding a mild dish washing liquid and allows the soapy water to evenly disperse across the surface. A soft cloth or sponge can be used to gently clean the shield. Rinse the shield in clear water and dry with a soft cotton towel or a microfiber cloth. Remember soap and water removes microbes on our hands, so it will work on your shield as well.You may choose to use disinfectant wipe or spray, but these products can leave a visible residue, which then needs to be removed.3590925342836500New Members of the TeamWe would like to introduce Rheumatology’s 3 new Clinical Nurse Specialists (left to right) and Dr Luke Sammut Consultant Rheumatologists- (below)Sister Victoria Hannah- before moving to Rheumatology, Vicky had served in the Army as a nurses, she now works alongside Claire Jeffries working with patients with ankylosing Spondylitis. He will be joining us in October 2020.? His initial appointment is as a temporary locum until the end of November,?but he will then assume his full substantive NHS consultant post? on 4th January 2021.50076101905000Dr Sammut qualified in 2011 from the University of Malta. His postgraduate medical and rheumatology training was undertaken within the local Wessex region and he is dual trained in both Rheumatology and General (internal) Medicine. Dr Sammut’s experience in research was as an Honorary Research fellow at the University of Salford where he was part of a research team investigating the role of digital media in the self-management of musculoskeletal conditions. He also completed a master’s degree in sports and exercise medicine at the University of Glasgow in 2013. Dr Sammut has presented his research at national and international conferences and published his work in medical journals.? In addition to his clinical and research experience, Dr Sammut enjoys teaching and promoting rheumatology to undergraduates, doctors in training and in primary care. He has a keen interest in general rheumatology, ultrasound, education and sports and exercise medicine.Having previously worked in the department as a registrar in 2013, Dr. Sammut is delighted to be returning to the department from October 2020.
