The RAV4 Prime engineers decided to create a RAV4 with a focus on driving pleasure as well as efficiency so, at 302 system net horsepower, the Prime can accelerate to 60mph in a projected 5.7 seconds. The quickest accelerating production Toyota is the Supra, which can accelerate to 60mph in and estimated 3.9 seconds.?

Q. So if I stomp on the accelerator pedal, will the gas engine turn on? Or will it stay in EV mode? A. That depends on the driving mode. RAV4 Prime features four distinct modes to tailor the hybrid system operation to the driver's preference.

EV mode is the RAV4 Prime default mode. It will operate in full electric mode, and will not start the gasoline engine, even if the throttle is fully depressed, assuming the High Voltage battery has sufficient charge and other conditions are met (see Owner's Manual).

AUTO EV/HV prioritizes electric driving but, under some conditions, the gasoline engine may run to achieve smooth driving performance.

HV mode operates in the same manner as the RAV4 hybrid, seamlessly blending electric motor generator operation with the gasoline engine for a balance of performance and efficiency.

CHG mode prioritizes running the gasoline engine to charge up the high voltage battery.

Q. What is the HP rating for the electric motor/EV mode? A. Because of the nature of how Toyota Hybrid systems work, the only published horsepower rating is the net system horsepower, which combines both engine and the motor generators power together. Q. Does the RAV4 Prime offer the same mpg as the Hybrid in hybrid mode? A. No, RAV4 Hybrid has an EPA-estimated 41city/38highway/40combined, and RAV4 Prime has an EPA-estimated 40city/36highway/38combined.

Q. At what speed does the AWD operate? A. Like its hybrid siblings, the RAV4 Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid, the RAV4 Prime's AWD can engage to improve traction performance at any vehicle speed. Only the Prius AWDe system has speed limitations regarding AWD performance.

Q. What is the estimated MPGe? A. The RAV4 Prime has an EPA-estimated 94 combined MPGe

Q. How did Toyota increase the horsepower in the RAV4 Prime? A. Several elements were brought together to produce the high-power output on the RAV4 Prime. Primarily, the battery capacity is greater than the RAV4 Hybrid. Prime utilizes a 355-volt, lithium-ion battery with a 51 amp-hour capacity. For contrast the RAV Hybrid utilizes a smaller capacity 245-volt, 6.5 amp-hour nickel metal hydride battery. The larger battery however, is only part of the story. RAV4 Prime also utilizes an additional electrical boost converter not used on the Hybrid RAV4, increasing the voltage available to the electric motor generators. Additionally, Prime utilizes the larger, more powerful P810 hybrid transaxle that is also featured in the Highlander Hybrid, where the RAV4 Hybrid uses the less powerful P710 hybrid transaxle.

Q. Does the RAV4 Prime have a new engine or is this an established Toyota engine? A. The RAV4 Prime utilizes the same engine as the Hybrid RAV4, the A25A-FXS, 2.5L 4 Cylinder, however it is tuned specifically for the Prime.

Q. Is there a rear locking differential on the RAV4 Prime? A. No, the RAV4 Prime utilizes an open differential in the rear and controls wheel slippage by applying braking force to the individual wheel that is slipping to direct power to the opposite wheel.

Q. What is the best drive mode that I should advise the customer to use while driving? A. EV Mode is the RAV4 Prime default mode. This mode will operate the vehicle in full electric mode, assuming the high voltage battery has sufficient charge, this mode also helps to provide the greatest possible fuel efficiency estimates when the Prime is regularly charged. However, to achieve maximum acceleration performance, a chargedup Prime should be switched to HV mode as this will allow the gasoline engine to team up with the motor generators to provide maximum power.

CHARGING

Q. How long does a full charge take? Is fast charging available on all models? A. Regardless of on-board equipment, a RAV4 Prime will take approximately 12 hours to fully charge when utilizing regular household current. However, charging times can be less depending on the power source and on-board equipment. All RAV4 Prime models come standard with a 3.3 kW onboard traction battery charger, allowing customers to take advantage of the shorter charge times that Level II charging (240 V) source provides. The 6.6 kW onboard charger available on XSE models as part of the Premium Package allows for a charge in as little as 2.5 hours. The chart below is from the RAV4 Prime

Owner's Manual Quick Guide and summarizes approximate charge times and the power source necessary to achieve those times.

Q. How much does it cost for a full charge? A. The cost will vary depending on your electricity rate at time of charge. Q. How much is the upgraded charger, can it be financed at the time of purchase, and is the fast charger sold separately? A. The optional 6.6 kW battery charger is an on-board piece of equipment available on XSE models as part of the Premium Package. This charger is not a stand-alone item, but is integrated into the vehicle itself to allow customers to take advantage of rapid Level II (240v) charging. Q. Are charging times going to be similar to the Prius Prime? A. No, Prius utilizes a different capacity Hybrid battery than RAV4 Prime, and as such charge times are different. The estimated charging times for Prius Prime are listed in the chart below.

Q. Will customers need an upgraded electrical box in the garage to get the most out of the 6.6 Kw charging? A. Customers will need to obtain a Level II charging cable or charging box capable of supporting the higher voltage and amperage required to take advantage of the 6.6 kW on-board charger at home. This may require the customer to consult a qualified electrician to ensure the household wiring and outlet can support the electrical demands of that level of charging.

Q. What charging cables come standard with RAV4 Prime? A. RAV4 Prime comes equipped with an AC charging cable designed to be plugged into a standard household electrical socket (NEMA 5-15R). The cable is similar to the one provided with a Prius Prime.

(NEMA 5-15R outlet) Q: Can RAV4 Prime be plugged in and charged anywhere? A: The RAV4 Prime has been designed to allow charging from an external power source using the AC charging cable supplied with the vehicle. That cable is designed to be plugged into a GFCI protected NEMA 5-15R outlet rated at 15amps. It is also designed to be charged at public charging facilities conforming to North American specifications. Electrical supply standards in other regions may not be compatible.

Q. Is there a time limit for charging? Can it be plugged in all day at home or charged for "x" amount of time and then unplugged? A. Charging will automatically turn off when the charge is complete. The AC charging cable can remain plugged in after the battery is fully charged. Charging will stop if the AC charging cable release button is pressed so, yes, charging can be stopped even if the battery is partially charged.

Q. Does the high amp charger reduce charge time with a 110-volt source? A. If the RAV4 Prime is plugged into a 110-volt source, the full charge time will be approximately 12 hours, regardless of whether the 6.6kW charger option is installed or not.
