The Candle of Peace – Rev. John Napoli and Elder Alejandra Haddad

CALL TO WORSHIP Elder Alejandra Haddad, Liturgist

Liturgist: We gather to worship God who does wondrous things.

People: God of justice and love, be present to us in our worship.

Liturgist: Renew us here as the showers that water the earth.

People: God welcomes all people to this holy place.

Liturgist: Blessed be God’s glorious name!

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Liturgist: The peace of Christ be with you.

People: And also with you.

Liturgist: Let us share the peace with one another.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (In Unison with Liturgist)

God of the future, you are coming in power to bring all nations under your rule. We confess that we have not expected your kingdom, for we live casual lives, ignoring your promised judgment. We accept lies as truth, exploit neighbors, abuse the earth, and refuse your justice and peace. In your mercy, forgive us. Grant us wisdom to welcome your way, and to seek things that will endure when Christ comes to judge the world. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE (Liturgist)

Hear the good news of the gospel! You are no longer strangers and aliens, but members together of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the prophets and apostles, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

Christ himself is our peace; in his flesh he has made us into one. Amen.

THE EPISTLE LESSON II Peter 3:8-15

Liturgist: The word of the Lord

People: Thanks be to God

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostle’s Creed (traditional)

I Believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Today's Guest Artist. Olivia Myers is a second year student at IU's Jacobs School of Music studying cello performance. She has been playing the cello for 11 years, and in that time has participated in numerous district, regional, state and national music festivals in her home state of Pennsylvania. Aside from music, Olivia enjoys making art, baking and spending time with family and friends. This is not Olivia’s first time sharing her talent with us. We’re delighted to have her be a part of the UPC Guest Artist Program again.
