Earth takes 24 hours to complete one rotation. Rotation of the Earth caused day and night.Revolution: The movement of the earth around the sun in affixed path or orbit. Earth takes 365 days and 6 hours to complete one revolution of the Sun. Revolution of the earth caused different seasons. The axis of the Earth makes an angle of 66 ? ? to its orbital plane.Circle which divides day from night on the globe is called Circle of illumination. The period of one rotation of the earth is called an Earthday.Every fourth year February has 29 days instead of 28 days, such a year with 366 days is called a Leap year. The earth revolves around the sun in an elliptical orbit (elongated orbit).A year is usually divided into 4 seasons: summer, winter, spring and autumn.Summer solstice: Occurs on 21st June. Direct sun rays fall on Tropic of cancer. Longest day and shortest night is experienced in northern hemisphereWinter solstice: Occurs on 22nd December. Direct sun rays fall on Tropic of Capricorn. Longest night and shortest day is experienced in northern hemisphere.Equinox: Occurs on 21st of March and 23rd September. Direct sun rays fall on equator. Whole Earth experienced equal days and equal nights.Lesson 4Map is a representation or drawing of the earth surface or a part of it drawn on a flat surface according to a scale.Types of Maps: Physical maps, political maps and thematic maps.Physical maps: Maps showing natural features of the Earth such as mountains, plateaus, plains etc.Political maps: Maps showing cities, towns and villages and different countries and state with their boundaries.Thematic maps: Maps focus on specific information; such as road maps, rainfall maps ponents of maps: Distance, direction and symbols.Scale: The ratio between the actual distance on the ground and the distance shown on the map.Types of scale: Small scale maps and Large scale maps. Small scale maps: When large area like continents and countries are to be shown, we use small scale maps. Large scale maps: When small area like village or town is to be shown, we use large scale maps. Large scale maps give more information than small scale maps.Cardinal points: North, South, East and West are the four major directions.Other four intermediate directions are north-east (NE), south-east (SE), south-west (SW) and north-west (NW). Most maps contain an arrow marked with the letter ‘N’ at the upper right hand corner which shows the North direction called North line.A compass is an instrument used to find out the main directions.Conventional symbols are certain letters, shades, colours, and pictures, lines which are used with general agreement to make the maps clear and easier to read.A sketch is a drawing of an area or objects mainly based on memory and not to scale. A plan is a drawing of a small area on a large scale.ASSAM GEOGRAPHY-An introduction Assam, the north- eastern sentinel of the frontiers of India.Assam is surrounded by six of the other seven states: Arunachal Pradesh.
