CC-SDG13-RPI complements the impulse provided by highly successful "Handbook of Climate ChangeAdapatation" (4 volumes)?, Handbook of Climate Change Communication (3 volumes) "Handbook of Climate Change Resilience" (4 volumes), which are comprehensive editorial projects on climate change adaptation. The FTZ-NK and ICCIRP teams will design the research and conceive the papers on SDG13, and will contact the colleagues whoregistered, with an invitation to join. Interested colleagues will be informed about the planned papers, their scope andmethods, and may reflect if they are able to join. Those who do, may provide specific contributions, and be listed asco-authors. Since the chosen journals will all be fully indexed and with an impact factor, the time here is well -SDG13-RPI represents a good opportunity for both, personal and professional development, and also serves the purposes ofenlarging one?s international network of contacts. From the perspective of shippers, these strategies meant severe space limitations to transport goods and delays in delivery dates. To cope with pandemic-related disruptions, players in the maritime sector adjusted their operations, finances, sanitary and safety protocols as well as working practices and procedures. In addition, several governments, through their border agencies, port authorities and customs administrations, made reforms to keep trade flowing while keeping people safe. The?Global Maritime Summit 2.0?delivered virtually will bring together decision makers from across the industry to discuss the latest developments and challenges in Shipping and Maritime Ports. The pledges, which were outlined on 2 December, constitute the world’s largest ocean sustainability initiative. The countries involved will end subsidies contributing to overfishing, enforce measures designed to end illegal fishing, and commit to managing oceans within their own jurisdictions sustainably by 2025.Why does this matter??As pressures on the world’s seas increase due to overfishing, climate change and plastic pollution, it’s becoming imperative to effect change to improve the sustainability of the ocean.?The?High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy?was set up to help do just that, with its latest initiative to “Give it 100%” – to sustainably manage 100% of national waters by 2025 – signed by Australia, Canada, Chile, Fiji, Ghana, Indonesia, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Namibia, Norway, Palau and Portugal. Its?agenda?is framed around ocean health, wealth, knowledge, equity and finance, and the aim is to push nations to develop sustainable ocean plans so all waters under national jurisdiction are sustainably managed by 2030.?The initiative’s launch was accompanied by a?report?from the panel’s expert group and SYSTEMIQ on sustainable ocean solutions, containing a roadmap to reach the aims. This outlines how measures – such as setting up national ocean task forces to coordinate efforts – can produce six times more sustainable seafood by 2050, create 40 times more renewable energy by the same date, create 12 million jobs by 2030, and result in $15.5tn in net benefits.?Stakeholders responded positively, including Canada’s aquaculture industry which?lauded?country’s pledge to protect its coastline – the world’s largest – and the 30 million square kilometres of national waters covered globally. Meanwhile, south of?Canada’s border, the US seafood sector?has instead been vocal against similar measures. The industry has written a?letter?to US government representatives opposing the creation of Marine Protected Areas to prevent fishing in 30% of the US’ Exclusive Economic Zone.?On a broader level, overfishing remains a difficult subject to address. The World Trade Organization this week?failed?to reach a deal to reduce subsidies contributing to the problem. There is, however, optimism progress has been made to reach a deal next year to reduce aid from heavy subsidisers including China, the EU, the US, South Korea and Japan. The Pew Charitable Trusts?estimated?a deal could increase fish biomass globally by 12.5% over the next 20 years.?Meanwhile, while certain retailers have taken action to?stop sourcing?tuna from stocks under pressure,?another recent failure?to reach a consensus – in this instance from the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission – means tropical tuna fisheries are set to lack any form of management on quotas or gear types from 1 January. While individual nations can implement their own regulations, this marks the first time in the commission’s 70-year history it has been without regional oversight.?The EU also has some work to do, with the European Court of Auditors?finding?action from the bloc since 2008 to reduce fishing to sustainable levels and restore European seas'?environmental status has not been strong enough.?The High Level Panel earlier this year?outlined?the net economic benefits of taking action on overfishing, which would amount to around $6.7tn over the next 30 years according to its analysis. It also said, under a “blue recovery” from Covid-19, coastal states could generate $17 for every $1 spent on offshore wind, and $3 for every $1 spent on mangrove restoration.Ocean SustainabilityOECD calls for fishing subsidy reform to meet goals of SDG 14?WTO fails to agree overfishing subsidy reduction?Arctic sees second-warmest year since 1900: report?High Arctic temperatures lead to record tanker sailing season?Treaty necessary to prevent mining damaging the seabed: report?Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Nestle are main plastic polluters: study?Sydney Harbour underwater garden aims to boost biodiversity?Around 1.5 billion masks could enter the ocean this year: report?US to safeguard coral habitats in the Pacific and Caribbean?Ocean pollution putting the health of billions at risk?Scotland introduces four additional marine protected areas?Car tyre chemicals kill endangered US salmon: study?Tagged plastic bottle travels 1,700 miles in waterways: studyAquacultureEU allocates €6.1bn for fisheries and aquaculture in 2021-2027?The Philippines injects $10.4m into aquaculture industry?Major players join to develop low-carbon salmon feed for Norway?Aquaculture centre of excellence planned for Nigeria?Scottish start-up develops salmon gut simulator for feed testing?BioMar to supply Quality Salmon's Swedish land-based salmon site?First floating solar seaweed farm developed off Netherlands?Second Huon Aquaculture escape releases up to 130,000 salmon?Tropical tuna to be unmanaged as IATTC fails to reach consensus?Seafood companies commit to sustainability goalsCarbon Capture and SensorsBECCS, biomethane needed for 78% UK emissions fall before 2035?Australian, Japanese firms to start floating CCS for LNG plants?United Airlines vows to be 100% green by 2050, funds CCS project?Walkers to produce fertiliser from potato waste, recycled CO2?Aker and MAN form carbon capture technology partnershipEmerging Preservation TechnologyIOC, LanzaTech develop novel CO2-to-fuels technology?VTT scientists develop recyclable PEF packaging using citrus peel?Braskem, Encina to use plastic pyrolysis to make polypropylene?ASU, TEXEL to commercialise batteries without rare earth metals?Yorkshire Water to cut wastewater pollution with IoT and AI tech?Toraphene unveils bio-based plastic reinforced with graphene?Sumitomo to produce polyolefins from waste with Axens' process?Yara plans full-scale green ammonia conversion at plant in Norway?Via Kaizen project to develop AI-based system for sea vessels?Engie's Tractebel unveils 15+ MW hydrogen-ready floater?AquaVentus group plans 10 GW offshore wind to hydrogen for 2035?Siemens to develop hydrogen-from-wind turbine with island modeGlobal Wind Blade Supply Chain Update 2020 now available, exclusively on GWEC's Members Area??? However, wind power growth has slowed down in India recently due to regulatory barriers, with projects delayed further due to the COVID-19 crisis. The country cannot risk slowing down its wind power development now, not only to ensure that decarbonisation takes place at the necessary rate meet its goals under the Paris Agreement, but also to unlock the socioeconomic benefits of wind power to drive a green recovery.Last week during the annual Global RE-Invest conference organised by the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, GWEC announced that we will establish GWEC India, a new India-based industry platform to tap into India’s huge wind potential. The new platform will focus on building out India’s huge potential and local supply capacity, addressing regulatory bottlenecks, sharing best international practices and experience, as well as facilitating dialogue and cooperation between government and industry stakeholders.Continue ReadingOffshore Wind in India: Key policy advances can lead to rapid gains for sectorBy: Anjali Lathigara,?Market Intelligence Analyst, GWECBlessed with around 7,600 km of coastline, the Government of India has set two ambitious offshore wind targets - 5 GW by 2022 and 30 GW by 2030. While India’s full offshore wind potential (see the graph above) has much more to offer. Realising India’s offshore wind potential will not only be crucial in decarbonising the country’s energy system to meet its Paris Agreement commitments, but also an important new driver of local jobs and investment for its coastal regions.Continue ReadingFocus on: India I GWEC's Global Wind Briefs on WindTVAs part of WindEnergy Hamburg Digital, GWEC's Global Wind Briefs on WindTV hosted a session to discuss the market status and outlook of wind power in India. Francis Jayasurya, GWEC’s India Director was joined by experts of the local industry that came together with more in-depth perspectives on policy, technology, supply chain, offshore wind developments and the role of wind power for a green recovery in India. RE-Invest 2020, organised by India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi, who reaffirmed the country’s commitment to renewable energy.Following the announcement of GWEC India at this landmark event, GWEC's CEO Ben Backwell moderated a session addressing the need to renew momentum around wind power growth in India over the next decade to drive decarbonisation and green recovery, which included the participation of Bhanu Pratap Yadav, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. GWEC’s India Director Francis Jayasurya also joined a session on how to attract renewable energy investment in Tamil Nadu.Find out more about RE-Invest?here.GWEC's South East Asia Task Force calls on Vietnamese government to rethink proposed Feed-in Tariffs reduction, which could “seriously damage” growth of wind power in the country?- GWEC welcomes the recent decision by the Vietnamese government to approve an extension of the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme for wind power in the country. However, the proposed dramatic reduction to the FIT risks seriously damaging the growth of Vietnam’s promising wind power sector, slowing down investment and the creation of new jobs and making it harder for Vietnam to meet growing energy demand. The proposed new FIT rates, included in an official letter from the Ministry of Industry and Trade on 28 October 2020, ?will be 7.02 US cent/kWh for onshore wind and 8.47 US cent/kWh for intertidal/nearshore wind, and would apply to projects commissioned from November 2021 to December 2023. This represents a tariff slash of more than 17 per cent for onshore wind – one of the most dramatic reductions seen in any wind power market globally to date, according to GWEC.Based on market forecasts and experience in other wind markets, a FIT reduction of this size would derail investment in new and planned wind projects in Vietnam and threaten the country’s current position as a leading wind market in South East Asia. Developers already facing delays due to COVID-19, and the general challenges encountered in an early stage wind market would struggle to close financing, leading to a “bust” period that could reduce new wind installations by up to 80 per cent in 2023, and a further 25 per cent per year thereafter.?Find out more?here.Corporate Renewables Procurement will be a driver of Thailand Wind Industry?- On 27 November, Mark Hutchinson, Chair of GWEC’s South East Asia Task Force spoke at the Thailand Wind Energy Association’s (ThaiWEA) annual conference in Bangkok, providing an overview of the global wind sector and sharing the activities undertaken by the Task Force this year to accelerate growth of wind power in South East Asia.?During his intervention, he highlighted the rising pressure of international RE100 companies with local facilities in Thailand to procure renewable energy to power their activities. Today, there are limited options available for Thai industries to procure renewable energy, which include the purchase of renewable energy credits (RECs) or in-house rooftop solar. Considering the limitations of both options, policy and market drivers will be key to accelerate corporate renewables procurement in Thailand.GWEC will continue our engagement with ThaiWEA, FTI and others to further policy initiatives aimed at increasing options for corporate procurement of renewable energy in Thailand, in line with our vision to accelerate the energy transition in the South East Asia region.Find out more about the corporate sourcing of renewable energy in South East Asia & Australia by watching GWEC’s joint webcast with RE100?here, part of the webcast series “Corporates in the Global Energy Transition”.UGES PowerMax Pvt Ltd - Asia is a solution provider that?assures synergy in project construction, operational excellence, improved compliance and technical enhancements.Find out more about UGES PowerMax Pvt Ltd - AsiaThe HARTING Technology Group is a leading global supplier of industrial connectivity technology for the three lifelines Data, Signal and Power.Find out more about HARTING Technology GroupShuxin LimPolicy and Communications Manager, GWEC+65 8531 8170shuxin.lim@GWEC is a member-based organisation that represents the entire wind energy sector. We now have a wealth of material to read and digest with many great ideas and inspiring stories. This will take time to process but the valuable knowledge and information in the responses will form the basis of RISE UP’s next steps, and has highlighted key players who can collectively drive forward the specific goals of RISE UP.While many of the opportunities to make progress in the ocean agenda?have been rolled back,?there is a real opportunity over the next few weeks to help ensure the World Trade Organization (WTO) finally agrees an end to harmful fisheries subsidies – a deal that has been nearly two decades in the making.Despite the fact that at least a third of fish stocks are already exploited beyond sustainable levels, governments continue to provide an estimated US$ 22 billion every year in harmful subsidies that increase fishing capacity. RISE UP explicitly calls on governments to end all harmful exemptions and subsidies for detrimental fishing practices, making the WTO agreement a crucial action to help us achieve two of the goals, namely S - speed the transition to a circular and sustainable economy and, of course, R - restore ocean life.#StopFundingOverfishing?is a joint digital campaign devised to pressure the negotiators to reach an agreement and successfully deliver on the SDG 14.6 mandate by the 2020 deadline. As of today, Monday 2nd November, there are 25 days left in which negotiators can turn around the fisheries subsidies problem. The campaign has produced some excellent digital assets which are built around 25 reasons to end harmful fishing subsidies, alongside content from key supporters who will give a face to this issue and show why it is so critical for us all. Many of the organisations signed up to RISE UP are helping drive this campaign. If your organisation is not already planning to join the push – it’s not too late! Just let the coordinators know you’re in via the?#StopFundingOverfishing?website?where you can find further information.RISE UP was conceived as a potent force for accelerating action and it is through collaboration and joining of forces that we will bring about the transformative changes needed to restore ocean health. Let’s all help push the WTO agreement over the line and so set a positive precedent for a busy 2021.Stay safe,?The RISE UP team?2021 Call for Sustainable Finance Ideas: NOW OPENDear colleagues,Given your previous interest in the Lab, we wanted to let you know that?the Lab’s 2021 Call for Ideas is open:?call-for-ideas/The Lab’s general program is accepting?ideas that address barriers to sustainable investment in emerging markets?across the adaptation and mitigation spectrum, while also creating investment opportunities for a post-COVID, green economy recovery. This year, the Lab has a special call for ideas that target sustainable energy access and sustainable cities, as well as Brazil and Southern Africa.Even if an idea does not exactly fit into one of these special call categories, we still encourage you to consider re-submitting or submitting a new idea this year. The?deadline is Tuesday, December 22nd.Submit an ideaWe will host a?webinar on Wednesday, November 18th?to review this year’s process and answer questions.Learn more and registerTo date, the Lab has developed 49 instruments that have collectively mobilized more than USD 2.2 billion in sustainable investment. Our best source of quality submissions is through our network. DECADE OF OCEAN SCIENCESession time: 8 Dec 2020 8:00PM - 9:30PM GMT***Date ThemeSustainable Ocean Summit (SOS) Workshop to Advance Ocean Industry Involvement in Data Collection and SharingOcean industries operate tens of thousands of vessels and platforms, 3-4 million fishing boats and more than a million km of submarine cables, all with the potential for cost effectively collecting information, often in data poor areas. At a time when the need for ocean, weather and climate data has never been greater, the budgets for data collection by government and research institutions are decreasing and operating costs are increasing. This vision of the WOC SMART Ocean-SMART Industries program is an industry-led system for strategic and sustained data collection from the ocean which can significantly and cost-effectively increase ocean, weather and climate knowledge. This can provide direct benefits to society and industry, e.g. through improved forecasting and predicting of extreme weather events, resulting in safer, more responsible ocean use and more resilient coastal communities and economies.Engaging with the WOC SMART Ocean-SMART Industries program enables companies to demonstrate their contribution to implementing Sustainable Development Goal 14a (Increase scientific knowledge of the ocean) and to advancing the U.N. Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.Post Your QuestionsThe interaction of the workshop starts now, you can post your questions, your comments, and introduce your projects that is relevant to this session. What is the most effectively way to coordinate between ocean scientists and ocean industry operators in order to engage industry in data collection and sharing in support of the U.N. Decade of Ocean Science ?? What are the investment opportunities linked to greater industry involvement in data collection and sharing and how can these be developed?? What are the priority locations, topics and technology to engage more ships and platforms of opportunity in collecting and sharing data? The session will begin with a presentation by WOC CEO Paul Holthus on the SMART Ocean-SMART Industries program, which facilitates the efforts of companies from any and all ocean sectors to get involved on collecting ocean, weather or climate data in support of SDG 14 and the U.N. Decade of Ocean Science.Vladimir Ryabinin, Executive Secretary, UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) will then outline the plans for the U.N. Decade of Ocean Science and the need and opportunity for ocean industries to participate in ocean observations, which the WOC is working to facilitate through its SMART Ocean-SMART Industries program. This will be followed by a presentation by David Millar, Government Accounts Director, Americas, Fugro, who will describe the ways in which Fugro has committed to data sharing and the rationale, value and process for companies to consider in relation to participating in data collection programs, such as Seabed 2030.Industry representatives from shipping, offshore energy, fisheries and other sectors will provide their perspectives on the theme and key questions of this session. For information on the WOC SMART Ocean-SMART Industries program, see well as for the U.N. This can form the basis for common metrics and indicators, which can lead to more standardized monitoring and reporting by companies and those investing in them.Building on the efforts underway by the increasing number of the funds and organizations interested in Blue Finance, the World Ocean Council is working to develop through the WOC Ocean Investor Roundtable, a common framework for Ocean ESG/Ocean Impact Investing.Post Your QuestionsThe interaction of the workshop starts now, you can post your questions, your comments, and introduce your projects that is relevant to this session.
