A Message from the President On behalf of the Board of the Oilsands Rotary Music Festival, welcome to the 46th Oilsands Rotary Music Festival, our first virtual festival. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate through this experience in uncharted territory.. The learning curve has been difficult for all involved: participants, parents, teachers, adjudicators and board members alike.Board members have striven to make this festival safe by constantly reviewing Alberta health Services requirements and by adjusting what have been our usual practices to comply with AHS and our local restrictions. We have made some difficult decisions regarding what we can do in this festival but always keeping safety first. Moving to a virtual festival has been the biggest challenge. Most of our adjudicators and teachers have had to move from in-person activities (teaching, examining for Canada Conservatory and the Royal Conservatory of Music) to on-line, and, while not ideal, it is better than in 2020 when everything suddenly was cancelled. In an effort to make the ORMF as similar to in-person, we have retained the practice of having written adjudications in the solo disciplines allowed. The adjudicators have received our usual adjudication certificates/comment sheets. At the end of the schedule they are using, they will send them back to us. Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze stickers will be applied, and the certificates will be given to the teachers, who may read the remarks and distribute them to their students. There will also be Platinum pins for those who attain a Platinum Rating. Adjudicators have been asked to select award winners as usual and to make recommendations to the Alberta Provincial Music Festival. The Provincial Festival will be virtual so there will be no cost involved in going. This year (and this year only) local festivals will be allowed to send 2 representatives in each Provincial Class. This decision was made by the AMFA Executive due to the cancellation of the 2020 festival when some festivals had already taken place and those recommended were unable to participate, which was extremely disappointing. The Alberta Music Festival Association, to whom we pay a fee per local entry in order to belong, has been very involved in assisting us with this year’s festival: expanding and reorganizing the syllabus with more classes available, setting up the on-line video and original music selections submission procedures, streamlining provincial recommendation procedure, and providing webinars to assist the transition to on-line entries. To ensure the success of the ORMF in 2021, please check our website FREQUENTLY at Stay well, stay safe, and stay home. From: Norma Jean Atkinson, President ................
