MEXICAN ARTIST MARTA PALAU PRESENTS HER NEW, RETROSPECTIVE BOOK MARTA PALAU. NAUALLI

AT THE USC FISHER GALLERY IN LOS ANGELES

ON NOVEMBER 15, 2007

Alongside colleagues like Francisco Toledo and Cecilia Vicuna, Mexican artist Marta Palau has broken ground in late 20th century and early 21st century work.

Los Angeles—On November 15, 2007 from 6:30 PM -- 8:00 PM the USC Fisher Gallery, in collaboration with the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Los Angeles, will present Mexican artist Marta Palau and her new book Marta Palau. Naualli. A panel composed of Selma Holo, Director, USC Fisher Gallery, Teresa Vicencio Alvarez, General Director, Centro Cultural Tijuana and Alfredo Alvarez, Director, UNAM-LA will discuss Marta Palau's career achievements. A reception will follow the event.

Alongside colleagues like Francisco Toledo and Cecilia Vicuna, Mexican artist Marta Palau has broken ground in late 20th and early 21st century work. The book Marta Palau. Naualli is an overview of her oeuvre from 1960 to the present and tracks everything from textiles to installations, and analyzes her investigations of hot-button social, political, racial and cultural issues including women's bodies and migration. The book is an art object in itself, showcasing Palau's experimental and innovative techniques, materials and methodologies, all deployed in relation to their historical context.

Marta Palau's work marks her as one of the most important artists contributing to the expansion of the field of creative endeavors in Mexico today. From the early stages of her career she defied orthodoxies, fashions, and the pressures of the market. Since the 1960s, Marta Palau has been one of the pillars of Mexican art, distinguished by the organic character of her sculptural language and by the intuitive way in which she has approached other cultures and traditions. She took part in the annual Salon Independiente exhibitions of the late 1960s. She is also a main exponent of fiber arts and one of the emblematic figures of the new ritualism whose roots are spreading throughout the cultures of Latin America.

Palau studied painting and sculpture in Mexico City, printmaking in San Diego and fabric in Barcelona, Spain. She has shown her work in Mexico, California, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and at the Havana Biennial, Sao Paulo Biennial, Lausanne Biennial of Tapestry and South America.
