a. Bound volumes, 1916-1936
“OSCAR WALDO WILLIAMS PAPERS”
Copied from originals loaned to the Archives Collection, University of Texas Library, by Mr. Clayton Williams, June 23, 1948
This set of bound letters and papers consists of 12 volumes of letters to his son, J. C. Williams, who was at that time living in China. Volume One also contains some family genealogical information. Unfortunately Volume Five is missing. There are a total 507 letters totaling 2199 pages. The contents range from local events, regional history, comments on events and customs in China, family news, comments on the state of the economy in general and the oil industry in particular, fatherly advice, and other general philosophical observations.
All of the letters are to J. C. Williams unless otherwise noted.

Vol. 2 - Sep 1923 to Jun 1924, 43 letters, 209 pages
Vol. 3 - Jul 1924 to Dec 1924, 28 letters, 151 pages

Note. See CWW, I, C, 3 & 4 for OWW/JCW correspondence. There are 82 letters in this file that are not in these bound volumes. When combined they number 589 letters which would run to 2554 pages or an average of 4.3 typewritten pages each. In addition there are 70 letters from J. C. to his father written between 1928 and 1944. Some of these are no doubt part of the condensed set of extracts at the end of this inventory.

SERIES I - OSCAR WALDO WILLIAMS PAPERS
SUB-SERIES E - LITERARY PRODUCTIONS, MSS
SUB-SERIES F - LITERARY PRODUCTIONS, PRINTED COPIES
This is set up as two files with a common numbering system to track both the mss and the printed copies. It is based on the list in "Pioneer Surveyor - Frontier Lawyer" by S. D. Myres. Some are included in his book under other titles as shown below. Attempt will be made to match the mss and the printed material. In some cases the item has appeared in more than one publication, esp. the newspaper articles. Many of the essays were not dated either in mss or printed form. Titles of published items appear in CAPITOL LETTERS.
The following two items are filed at the start of Sub-Series E:
1. Bound volume of “In Old New Mexico”, Reminiscences of Judge O.W. Williams, Fort Stockton, Tex. Secured through the efforts of J Evetts Haley, July 1930. Contents: “Baja el Sol”, 9 pages, and 26 installments of “In Old New Mexico”, c. 1928, 147 pages.
2. Ring binder with photocopies of title pages of all pamphlets.

Series IV, Jesse Caleb Williams papers
Sub-series I – The CHINA Film
It will probably never be possible to sort out these images. They were taken by J.C. Williams in China, Hong Kong, Indo China, India, China Inland Sea, Fort Stockton, Singapore, Shanghai, Foochow, and possibly other locations between about 1936 and 1945. They were taken on twelve 100" and twelve 400' reels of film. Some of the reels were identified and some were not. Much of the film was heat-damaged and impossible to transfer to video film.
The video transfer people did their best to salvage as much as possible. I viewed the finished tapes and attempted to make notes of the scenes. I then tried to match up my notes with the original titles on the film cans. We will next view them on a VCR with digital linear measuring capacity. Hopefully we can come up with some better idea of their content.
It is very expensive to have these edited and in the long run it may not be worth it. It would require a very careful viewing and identification of scenes.
The most important and interesting segments are for our purposes the scenes in Fort Stockton. In the broader sense the scenes of the start of the tiger hunt (only partly salvaged), the war-time scenes, the scenes with the Clipper, and some of the domestic scenes are most interesting. While we will never identify these images with certainty they do provide a glimpse in the situation in China at the time of the Chines upheaval and the beginning of WWII.

Notes Re: JCW 16mm Film Boxes and Cans
The J.C. Williams film consisted of 12-100’ and 12-400’ reels totaling about 4800’. In 2001 it was discovered that this film was beginning to deteriorate. Video tapes were made from as much of it as was possible. In 2006 the acquisition of a digital scanner made it possible to take a second step in salvaging the film before it further deteriorated. Over 300 frames were clipped from the reels and scanned . The film was then discarded. When nitrate film deteriorates it becomes somewhat dangerous as it gives off nitric oxide and other gasses and eventually can become self-combustible. When 16mm “safety” film (made of acetate) deteriorates it gives of a distinctive vinegar odor. While not combustible, the acetic acid produced can damage other acetate film in the vicinity. The conversion to both the video and digital images stored on a CD provide two methods of preserving the images and protecting other film in the collections from possible damage. Some of the film was too deteriorated to salvage either way.
Notes taken from the film in 2001 and a viewing guide to the Videos will provide some identification of the “stills” collection.
