I was looking forward to reading this to my 2nd graders at the start of the year after reading the reviews. However, with the mention of a scab that's been named and the boy lying about his fake tattoo, I'll pass!

This is a Summer reading book for my almost 7 year old heading into 2nd grade. She picked this from a list for fiction. It is a Level 3 or Guided Reading Level K. Transitional Reader; multi syllable & compound words, more dialogue, different points of view, more complex storylines & characters, greater range of genres. Perfect book for my almost 2nd grader! "It's the first day of second grade for Amber Brown! She is excited - but a little nervous too. Second grade had better be ready for

Amber Brown!" My daughter was able to read this book with little to no help. We liked the story & the illustrations were good too!

My about to be second grader enjoyed this and found it reassuring. I don't think it will be re-read very frequently, but it was a worthwhile shared experience.

With the start of the school year this week, I read this book to my new second graders. Kids very often have worries about their teacher especially if the teacher is new. The teacher used her name, Ms. Light, as well as a series of play on words to help her class realize how much fun second grade would be. Great way to point out the use of words with double meanings, double entendre, and discuss student interactions. My students liked this book which generated an applause at the end....always a sign of enjoyment!

I just got this book from the library for my daughter (a 5 year old with a 1st-2nd grade reading level) and she has read and REread and RE-REread this book. She wants Amber's backpack and when I mentioned there might be a girl named Hannah in her Kindergarten class, she said she hoped it wasn't Hannah Burton. We said WHO??? and she replied, "The girl who's mean to Amber." Oh. I am on tonight to buy all the Amber books I can find!

In this beautifully illustrated novel, children will see that they're not the only ones to experience fear when confronting new situations. The story is character driven, and will be sure to open up discussion about facing the fears encountered in growing up.Highly recommended!

I chose this book for my first graders as an end of the year gift. Of course I have all levels. On the last day of school when they each got their book, they were reading it to each other! :)
