HOMEWORK POLICY/CLASSWORK POLICY

Homework for my class will be sent home on Fridays and due back on the following Friday. I understand how hectic some of your schedules are so my policy gives your child an entire week to complete homework. This allows you and your child to choose times that are best for your family.

However, I do require my students to write our weekly spelling words in his/her assignment book every weekend. I check the assignment books every Monday morning and reward those students who have completed that spelling assignment. Throughout the week, your child should be reading aloud the weekly reading story to you from their reading books to increase their fluency.

Classwork not finished during the day is to be taken home, finished, and returned the next morning (no later). However, if your child has wasted time during the classwork assignment, he/she will be made to finish the assignment in study hall.

Homework and/or classwork not turned in on time will result in study hall.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is very important in our school. Please help your child develop good attendance at an early age. Please make us aware of any family trips and check with the school concerning any questions you have regarding attendance. Remember, school BEGINS at 7:55. It is very important that your child be here ON TIME. Also remember if a child is checked out early, it is considered a tardy. Please send in an excuse any time your child is absent.

LUNCH AND SNACK

If you write a check for lunch, make it payable to Saffell Street Elementary and put your child’s name on the “for” line. Our lunch time is 11:20 – 11:45 each day.

We do have a snack time each day during recess. Please send a HEALTHY snack for your child. Soft Drinks and candy are NOT allowed, and your child will not be allowed to have them.

BUS RIDING

If your child ever needs to ride a different bus, please send in a note with specific information or call the office so that we can be sure your child gets to the correct destination. Your child may not board a different bus by word of mouth only.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PLAN

We are going to have lots of fun this year studying many interesting things! In order for your child to get the most from our studies, we must set some guidelines for our classroom.

Saffell Street School has FIVE BASIC RULES:

1. FOLLOW STAFF DIRECTIONS

2. STAY ON TASK

3. RESPECT PEOPLE AND PROPERTY

4. KEEP HANDS, FEET, AND OBJECTS TO YOURSELF

5. FIGHTING, THEFT, WEAPONS, AND TOBACCO ARE NOT TOLERATED AT SAFFELL

BEHAVIOR

I do expect all students to behave in my classroom and be respectful to one another. I expect all students to be responsible in doing their work. I do write in their assignment books every day. If your child has any problems during the day, I let you know in this book, so please make it a routine to check their assignment books each night and sign it. I require a parent/guardian signature each night.

CONSEQUENCES FOR UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR

1. Everyone wants to receive a “5” every day. This means you’ve had a great day.

2. If you receive a “4”, then you’ve had a warning and need to make better choices.

3. If you receive a “3”, then you’ve had 2 warnings. You will also owe 3 walking laps or sit 10 minutes of recess in study hall.

4. If you receive a “2”, then you’ve had 3 warnings. You will also owe 6 walking laps or sit 15 minutes of recess in study hall.

5. If you receive a “1”, then you’ve had 4 warnings. You will call your parent(s) and see the principal.

It is my belief that students do better walking or running rather than sitting. I feel that walking or running is far more productive. This allows the child to move and get needed exercise. I have used this practice for many years and have found the majority of kids would much rather walk or run laps as opposed to sitting in study hall. Please fill out the attached sheet concerning policies, laps and e-mails.
