Student Reading Wall List

The Student Reading Wall is a specialized reading tool designed to be used in a “one-on-one” situation with a student.

By following the Reading-Wall procedures outlined for 15-20 minutes daily, students typically advance 1 year in reading ability over a 2-4 month period.

The sheets are designed to be placed side by side on a wall or

back of the classroom for motivating student progress.

Essential 2nd Grade Vocabulary

Extensive effort has gone into the selection of the 2nd Grade Vocabulary words. Criteria for placement in this list included:

1) Frequency of use in average 2nd grade reading material.

2) Likelihood of appearing on 2nd grade standardized tests.

The words contained in the list are primarily the “Most Common” 860 words in average reading material, following the 340 “Most Common” 1st Grade Reading Vocabulary. Students who accomplish mastery of these words will be reading slightly above grade level and typically score in the top 25% on 2nd Grade national reading tests (such as the - SAT - CTBS and FCAT).

A total of 937 words are used in the 2nd Grade Reading Wall List

and arranged as follows:

1st nine weeks – 217 words

2nd nine weeks - 216 words

3rd nine weeks - 252 words

4th nine weeks - 252 words

TOTAL = 937 words

Although there are 937 words used in the list, we’ve taken 70 of the most difficult 1st grade words and included these in the “Week 1” Review and as word #5 for Weeks 2-9. Therefore, after subtracting the 70 review words, there are approximately 860 new vocabulary words introduced in the 2nd Grade Reading Wall Vocabulary List.

Words are arranged from the "most common" words at the beginning of the list to the "lesser common" words toward the end of the year. This provides the most logical and efficient order for instruction. To further increase memorization efficiency we have organized words into similar vowel sound and reading-rule categories. This strategy alone dramatically increases a child’s “word learning rate” by giving a common sound or rule to use while decoding the words.

Word of the Day

The last two words in each column list are what we call our “Words of the Day.” The words have been isolated in the rectangle box because they are far more difficult to learn than the main phonics based words. This difficulty occurs because they are either visually similar to other words (i.e. went – want) or are not consistent with typical phonics rules (i.e. “does” sounds like duz – “what” sounds like wut). The Words of the Day must be given intense extra practice to insure their complete memorization. Many of the “Words of the Day” are common test question words and are considered extremely high priority.

The Reading Wall Time Chart

The next page in this document is the chart to be used for keeping track of how fast a child says the column of words. Place the Time Chart above the “Lesson” Heading of the each Reading Wall column for visual motivation and easy recording.

Be sure to follow the 4 steps when practicing

each column of LEVEL Words with the child

|STEP 1 |PRACTICE THE VOWEL SOUND |

| |Repeat each “colored” vowel sound in each word. |

| |This places the sound in the child’s short term memory. |

|STEP 2 |“STOP AT THE VOWEL SOUND” STRATEGY |

| |Have the child “blend” the sounds made by the letters up to the colored vowel sound. |

|STEP 3 |PRACTICE ENTIRE COLUMN |

| |Say words slowly until the column is read 100% correctly. |

|STEP 4 |MOTIVATION STEP |

| |Get out the stopwatch (or your watch timer) and record time on next several attempts. |

That’s all there is to it.

Follow these steps for 15-20 minutes daily

(two sessions of 7-10 minutes separated by a few hours)

and watch a child’s reading progress jump into high gear.
