Summer Reading

Dear Second Grade Students,

We hope you are enjoying your summer. Don't forget, there's no better time to get lost in the adventures of reading, than in the summertime!

Required Reading

You are required to read TWO books by author and illustrator, Tomie DePaola. Mr. DePaola is a great author and has written books for all levels and interests. Please visit the sites below to browse some book titles by this author.

Required Projects

You are required to complete ONE project from the following list for ONE of the titles you choose to read by author and illustrator, Tomie De Paola.

Create a diorama based on a scene from a selected story. Construct a comic depicting at least 3 scenes from a selected story. Make a book report story map (listing the author, title, setting, characters, problem and

resolution). List 5 unique or unfamiliar vocabulary words and their meanings in a crossword puzzle. Design a book jacket for your story. Include the author, title and a picture on the front

cover and a three sentence description of the story on the back cover. These projects may, but need not be, computer generated. A helpful site for all of the projects listed (except for the diorama) may be Read, Write, Think. Please visit if you so choose.

Recommended Reading

We strongly recommend that students read at least TWO other books of their choice this summer. Parents: We are suggesting that a fun way to encourage this would be to participate in the Scholastic Summer Challenge. Please visit to help your child sign up. This site offers recommended book titles, reading logs, and general tips to engage students in summer reading. We are also providing a reading log for your child to use as well.
