January 2015

Dear First Grade Families,

It is hard to believe that the end of January is here already! As the year has changed, so have the expectations in writing. Your child will continue to learn more about the process of writing and be expected to complete more writing on his/her own. During writing time your child has been working on the following skills.

*Using the correct punctuation according to the type of sentence written

*Using capitalization when appropriate

*Using his/her best handwriting

*Using the grammar and punctuation rules taught

*Using spaces between words

*Writing an expository paragraph containing six sentences that is organized, including; a topic sentence, details, elaboration, and a closing sentence

• The students have learned how to write opinion pieces and will also learn how to write informative/explanatory pieces of writing.

*Descriptive language – using adjectives or descriptive phrases to make his/her writing more interesting

Below you will see what your child will be working on during the month of February.

February Writing: Your child will continue to work on paragraph writing. We will have a stronger focus on elaboration or “telling more” in paragraph writing. We will also focus more on informative paragraphs where your child provides details and facts about a topic. Toward the end of February each student will be assessed on expository writing. On the back you will see some ideas of what you can do at home to help foster writing.

Ways to share and encourage writing with your child at home!

[pic] Assist your child’s efforts to write and revise school and/or home writing assignments. Reinforce the idea that words and sentences can be changed to make thoughts clearer and more interesting.

[pic]Ask your child what a “green” sentence stands for (topic sentence or closing sentence). Ask what a “yellow” sentence stands for (reason, detail, or fact). Ask what a “red” sentence stands for (explanation, elaboration, or example).

[pic]Ask your child to write a paragraph about a topic he/she knows a lot about (i.e., school, a favorite sport, a hobby, a favorite place to go, a favorite food, a good friend, etc.).

[pic]Ask your child what types of words need to be capitalized. Ask him/her to give you a couple of examples (i.e. the days of the week, months of the year, holidays, names of people and pets, the word I, and names of cities, states, and countries).

[pic]Ask your child what a noun is and to give an example. Ask your child what a verb is and to give an example.

Please review the writing activities sent home with your child. Ask your child to tell you about what he/she is learning about in writing. You may encourage your child to finish any incomplete work; however, it is NOT homework.

If you ever have a question or a concern regarding your child’s writing progress, please contact me at (253) 931-4976.
