Duration of Assignment: 2 flex groups setting: 20-25 min. per group

1 night of independent study

Pre-Assessment Plans: Reading assessment is done for each child, teacher assessments; whole group reading a story with the same topic as individual flex group books/

Tiers of the Activity:

Each group will have a Venn Diagram but compare and contrast will be a bit more detailed.

The writing component is tiered form (1) speaking (2) writing (3) finding material and writing from characters point of view.

Matching Students to Tiers:

By the reading assessments and the child’s reading capabilities

Working Guidelines for Students:

At Risk Group

Teacher guided reading and modeled- then an independent activity at home.

On Level Group

Venn Diagram and an interview done independently. (Both, at-risk, and on-level will discuss activity before given.

Advanced Group

Work will be done independently

Time Requirements: 2 Days

Introducing Tiered Assignments to Students:

Students will be given a detailed assignment in flex groups where the topic will be thoroughly introduced. During whole group reading, the class will read a story based on the same topic.

Giving Directions for the Tiered Activities:

The directions for the assignments will be given in small flex group settings.

How Work will be Graded:

Teacher assessments and completion of writing and speaking activity.

Monitoring Student Work and Progress:

Teacher assessed and one-on-one read aloud.

Bringing Closure to the Lesson for the Whole Class:

This will be done as a whole group discussion of things learned-each will be about the same topic-but researched at different levels.
