Converting the Form Asinx + Bcosx to the Form Ksin(y + x)
Differential Equations Equation of Motion
Converting the Form A sin x + B cos x to the Form K sin(x + )
Given the expression A sin x + B cos x, we are going to change it to the expression K sin(x + ).
Find the value of K and .
K = A2 + B2
A sin x + B cos x =
A2 + B2
Asin x + A2 + B2
Bcos x A2 + B2
sin = B A2 + B2
cos = A . A2 + B2
A sin x + B cos x = K (sin x cos + cos x sin ) = K sin(x+ ).
Example: convert 5sin x - 7cos x
K = 52 + (-7)2 = 25+ 49 = 74 = 8.6
sin = - 7 = -54.5o 8.6
cos = 5 = 54.5o 8.6
Since the sine is negative and the cosine is positive, must be in quadrant IV, and = -54.5o. The final equation is:
5sin x - 7cos x = 8.6sin(x - 54.5)

Example: 2sin x + 5cos x is plotted. What is the amplitude of the graph?
K = 22 +52 = 29 = 5.4 2sin x + 5cos x = 5.4sin (x + )
Therefore the amplitude is 5.4.
