New Heights Early College High School will apply both the “Code of Student Conduct” of Massasoit Community College and NHCSB “Code of Student Conduct.” AMP outlines the New Heights’ High School code of conduct. All students agree to be and stay Attentive, Mindful, and Prepared throughout the school year. Below details our expectations for ourselves and each other. ExpectationWhat does it look like?Attentive We are...AwakeOn taskOn timeFollow directions in a timely mannerParticipateMindful We are mindful...Toward teachers and peersWhen to get out of our seatWhen/how to participateOf the appropriate volume when speaking to othersHow to communicate in a given settingOf my surroundingsPreparedWe will...Have our materials (paper, pencil, book)Be in uniformHave our computersComplete our homeworkDo our own work and not present other’s work as our own without proper citations. Always have a pass if late to class/school25660354699000As high school students, we consistently stay AMPed in order to achieve everything we are hoping to. We hold each other accountable because we are a team. AMPed high school students have the ability to attend field trips, participate in incentives, and receive the privileges they deserve! Yellow Card/Red Card ProcessBehaviors that do not AMP up our learning will be addressed by teachers using our Yellow Card/ Red Card System. The system is meant to keep us accountable for ourselves and each other and help us understand how to learn in a collegiate environment. YELLOW CARDBehaviors that do not AMP up our learning will be addressed by teachers using the following progression: Nonverbal acknowledgment and redirection using proximity when necessaryVerbal (private redirection) Conference (private; in or outside the classroom) Yellow card to Dean or Principal Pending debrief with Dean or Principal and teacher permission, student may return back to class. Upon meeting with the Dean or Principal, a yellow card warrants a parent phone call, a Friday Extension, and counts toward their ability to participate in upcoming events. RED CARDThe behaviors listed below are severe and warrant immediate removal from the classroom by the teacher; there is no progression. Profanity- directed at someone and publicly Intentional damage to property/vandalismInappropriate and/or graphic contentBlatant insubordinationTheftFighting, unsafe or inappropriate physical contact, horseplay (kicking, hitting, slapping, tripping,) instigating. Bus ViolationLeaving school without permissionIllegal substances (use or carrying on your persons) Assault on school staff Dangerous Weapons Red card behaviors will result in an immediate parent phone call and either Friday Extension, exclusion from field trips/incentives, and/or out of school suspension. Friday ExtensionExtension may be assigned by the Dean of Students or Principal for breaking the school’s Code of Student Conduct. Depending on the severity of the incident or the frequency of events in a given week, students will be required to serve between 1-3 hours on Friday. Students with Friday Extension will report to the designated room promptly at 1:05 PM. The week runs from Thursday-Wednesday to allow for the Dean of Students and/or Principal to make contact with the student’s parent/guardian and secure post-extension transportation. In a given week (that is calculated from Thursday-Wednesday), if a student accrues the following he/she will have to serve all or a part of Friday Extension. 1 yellow card: 1:00-2:00pm 2 yellow cards: 1:00-3:00pm3 yellow cards: 1:00-4:00pm 1 red card: 1:00-4:00pmCombination of red/yellow cards: 1:00-4:00pm, possible out of school suspension (OSS)Being Excused from ExtensionWe recognize that there are occasionally times when family commitments require students to miss Friday Extension. Thus, we provide every student with one “extension pass” per quarter. These passes will be issued at the beginning of the year and students must show them to the extension monitor that afternoon in order to be excused. The pass is only good for one hour. Therefore, if a student received a full Friday extension (1:00-4:00pm), he/she would could use the pass and then serve 1:00-3:00pm. We also automatically excuse students from extension for either medical (doctor’s appointments, dentist’s appointments, etc.) or legal reasons (court appearances, DCF meetings, etc.) as long as a note is brought into the school. Students must bring the note first thing in the morning and deliver it to the Dean of Students in order to be excused from the upcoming Friday extension. If the student does not bring a note, the extension will be considered unexcused, and it will be assumed that they skipped. The school also, on a case by case basis, may excuse students for extreme situations (i.e. death of a family member). If a student is in a situation in which they need to go home to take care of younger siblings, it is the parent’s responsibility to call the school and arrange for them to serve the extension the following week. These sort of cases should be infrequent since the possibility of needing to serve extension is an aspect of the school’s policy that is communicated during the enrollment process.Skipped ExtensionAnyone who does not attend extension for anything other than the reasons listed above or is removed from extension will receive an immediate phone call and a parent meeting will be scheduled to discuss further consequences. If a student skips or is removed from detention 2 or more times in a quarter, the student will receive an out of school suspension and a mandatory parent meeting. Red Card Out of School SuspensionStudents who have been given a suspension due to a RED card behavior will receive a 2 day suspension for the first offense, unless it is noted above as a 10 day automatic OSS which can lead to long term suspension hearings. Students who are suspended out of school, will be required to write a self-reflection which will be read through with the Dean and principal. Students who receive long term suspensions or a second offense suspension, will be required to attend a Restorative Justice Conference meeting along with their parents upon return from suspension. In the event that an incident involves multiple offenders or victims, restorative circles will be used to re-enter the students involved back into the school community. All participants must agree to participate in and adhere to the guidelines of conference prior to the conference being held. Students will not be allowed to re-enter the school community from long term suspension, until a conferencing meeting is scheduled. In the event that an incident includes both a victim and an offender, the students will be required to meet with counseling for mediation. If participants do not all agree, or it is deemed that a restorative conference may not be the most effective approach, the HS Leadership team will meet to discuss alternative options.Arrival/Advisory/Hallways/Lunch/Dismissal5219700333375Morning ArrivalAdvisory begins at 7:40am every morning, and it is the expectation that students are in their classrooms by 7:45 to be considered on time. We understand that many students are dropped off earlier, and it is important to ensure the safety of both our building and our students during these times. Students who arrive between 7:00-7:20 will sit in the front foyer of the school. At 7:20, students will relocate to the cafeteria until teachers and classrooms are available at 7:40am. Students are required to have a pass if they are in any other parts of the building during the morning 7:00-7:40 time. Student will not be permitted to enter the building with beverages other than water in the morning. Morning Advisory5207018034000Students begin and end each day in advisory. Advisory is the time and space to get prepared for the day, catch up on school and world events, have breakfast or snack, turn in any important paperwork/field trip forms, work on your individualized learning plan (ILP) on the Naviance platform, and/or participate in team building or community building activities. Your advisory is your family within the larger high school family, and your advisor will:check in with you regarding your grades and overall progressmeet regularly with you in the morning and afternoon to provide academic and social-emotional mentorship and support. facilitate and encourage communication through restorative circles.help you navigate any issues or concerns you may have.lead discussions on any current or pressing issues in the school or world.motivate through friendly competitions to build school culture!Breakfast5562600123825Students must take all meal components with them to their seat. Please do not open your breakfast until you are at your seat. If there is an item that you do not want to eat please either save it for later or share it with a friend.Students are allowed to consume their own breakfast or beverage that they brought with them. All must be disposed of before heading to 1st period. Do not return any items to the breakfast bag. Chromebooks:Students will pick up and return their assigned chromebook to their advisory cart each and every day. Students will follow their advisory’s procedure for doing so. It is important that students put their laptop in the correct slot and ensure it is plugged in and charging for the next school day. HallwaysGeneral Hallway Rules: Students must stay to the right of the hallway in order to ensure traffic flow4238625209550Students must have the appropriate pass before leaving a classroomStudents are expected to exercise care and mindfulness when passing through the corridors by walking at all times, ensuring proper social space between each other, and demonstrating courtesyFood is not allowed to be visible in the hallway and may be confiscated if observed by staffStudents are allowed to have their cell phones out during transitions, but they are not to be taking pictures, snapping, or anything else that could cause a traffic jam, commotion, or delay their on time attendance to class.Transitions:Students must go directly to class during transition unless using the bathroom. Students that choose to use the bathroom during transition are still responsible for getting to class on time. Late to class will be marked on their attendanceStudents who are in the hallway at a time other than transition must have a passExceptions:If a student has a medical issue that warrants a modification to this policy, the parent/guardian and student are responsible for communicating the need for a modification with the school nurse. If the nurse approves the medical documentation she will notify the Dean of Students as to the recommended change in an individual student’s hallway privileges. Students who have a medical condition and do not communicate with our nurse and administration may be subjected to disciplinary actions if they are found in the hallway without a pass.5857875476250LunchLunch is an important part of the day as it allows for students to socialize, recharge, and refuel for the afternoon. As high school students, we are allowing for more flexibility and responsibility within the cafeteria as we know our students will rise to the occasion. At their respective times, students will head downstairs using the side stairs (stairs of the bus exit) to the cafeteria for lunch and enter through the main entrance. Seating Students do not have assigned seats. Tables will be labeled to help with dismissal and random lottery/privileges (for outside seating)Students should raise their hand to let a teacher/dean know if they need to get up for any reasonStudents are allowed to use their phones during lunch as it is an “on” hour. If the phones cause a commotion or distractions, we reserve the right to change the policy. Pass down trash methodGetting Lunch: Students must take a main meal from Mrs. Rose and either a piece of fruit or a vegetable. Students must make sure to check in with the register to ensure your meal has been counted. If there is an item that you do not want to eat please either save it for later or share it with a friend once you get to your seat in the lunchroom.Bathroom Passes4 passes total (2 boys; 2 girls)Ask Ms. Casimir to use the restroom, and she will hand you the pass. If all passes are already out, you will be put on the list as soon as someone comes back with the pass. Dismissal from LunchDismissed by tableExit side doorUse side stairwellAfternoon Advisory & DismissalStudents will be in the advisories in the afternoon for announcements, chromebook return, snack, and for dismissal. Students will be dismissed by mode of transportation, and the expectation is that students leave the building in an orderly and timely fashion. Advisors and hall monitors will have lists detailing what buses and mode of transportation each student takes as to assist them in leaving when they are called. Detentions do not occur Monday-Thursday for high school students, so the only students staying after will need to have written permission from a parent/guardian and the teacher/dean they are staying after with. Given that all afterschool activities end at 5:00pm, parents/guardians are expected to pick up their student up promptly. We understand that things happen, but it is imperative for staffing and safety reasons that parents/guardians arrive no later than 5:15pm. We will be requiring a payment of $10 per day for late pickup which occurs between 5:15-5:45pm. At 5:45pm, the building is closed for the evening and any remaining students will be asked to wait outside at the picnic tables, please plan accordingly. 1123825AttendanceOn-Time Attendance4962525161925Attendance is one of the most important factors in the establishment of a good school record and the first documentation requested by a potential employer. It is also a requirement by MA law to be in school. Per MA law and graduation requirements, students who have 12 or more excused and/or unexcused absences may be required to repeat the same grade, at the determination of the principal. Regular and punctual attendance is essential for every student. Active classroom participation in the learning process is crucial to academic success and the realization of our mission, “We go to college. Period.” NHCSB must be notified before the start of the school day (prior to 7:30am) of a student’s absence. If a student is absent from school and NHCSB personnel has not been informed by 7:30am, parents will be notified either by an automated message or NHCSB personnel at the telephone numbers provided by the parent before the start of the school year. If a student has fifteen (15) or more absences in a school year, NHCSB will notify the parents and make a reasonable effort to meet with the parent to develop action steps for student attendance, which shall be developed jointly by the Principal or his/her designee, the student, and the parent, with input by relevant school personnel. Acceptable reasons for excused absences include: A verified medical appointment or illness Note: Medical notes from doctors must indicate that the child was seen at the Doctor's office on the day of absence. Parents have 3 days to provide a physician’s note. The death of a family member (parent, sibling, grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin)Religious holidays – verified in writing by clergyLegal obligation such as court appearance – verified with copy of summonsAbsences approved by the PrincipalMedical or psychological tests during the school day. Parents must show evidence (such as a note from the health center) that the tests could not be scheduled after school or during school vacation. Any student missing five consecutive days will be required to have documentation from a physician before returning to school. Failure to attend school, except under extraordinary circumstances, may result in school personnel contacting certain state agencies or filing an official complaint with the court. If a student is absent for ten (10) consecutive days during the school year, NHCSB will investigate whether the student intends to return through multiple reasonable efforts, including an attempt to contact the parents by phone, through certified mail and by a home visit. If there has been no successful contact between the family and the school to explain the absences, that student may lose his or her seat at NHCSB and may be considered unenrolled from the school. If a student fails to attend the first ten consecutive days of the school year, he/she will be unenrolled from New Heights if there is no successful contact with the parents despite reasonable efforts made by NHCSB.Late ArrivalStudents arriving late to school will report immediately to the front office to check in and receive a late pass to class. Students will not be allowed into class without a pass. It is important to note that any student who arrives after 12:00pm (noon), will be admitted into the school but counted as absent.Late BusIf a student is late due to a bus, this will not count as an unexcused tardy to school as a late bus is out of his/her control. Upon arrival, late bus students will receive a pass to class as soon as they step off of the bus and will report to their morning advisory or first period class. Early DismissalNo student may leave school before the end of scheduled classes for any reason without the expressed permission of his/her parent or guardian and a school official. Permission for dismissal is granted with a note signed by a parent or guardian, or a phone call made to the front office stating the reason and the time for the dismissal. Dismissal notes must be presented to the office no later than 8:00 am, at which time a pass will be given to the student for dismissal. The student will present their pass to their teacher at the time of their dismissal to be allowed to exit the classroom. The receptionist is required to ask for photo identification from the individual picking up the student. This individual must be listed on the student enrollment form as approved by the child’s parents. Bathroom Use6276975276225There are many “right” times to request the bathroom, and there are other times that leaving the classroom to use the restroom can be disruptive and counterproductive to your learning. For safety and accountability reasons, students may not use the bathroom during the first and last 10 minutes of class. Students may use the restroom during transitions; however, it is important to remember there are only 3 minutes between classes. Students may use the bathroom during lunch and must follow the procedures. Students must first report to the lunch room, and then ask for permission. **Students should use their Student Playbook as their pass to the bathroom, and they must have a pass when transitioning to and from the bathroom. BullyingNHCSB is committed to fostering a climate of inclusion and as such our policy reflects our commitment not to discriminate based on race, gender, color, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity/national origin, age, or handicap/disability in accordance with state and federal law. In order to foster an inclusive climate that is free of bullying, cyberbullying, or retaliation NHCSB recognizes the need to recognize behavior that is not conducive to an inclusion environment and will take steps to stop them. The school or district expects that all members of the school community will treat each other in a civil manner and with respect for differences. 1180975NHCSB will not tolerate any unlawful or disruptive behavior, including any form of bullying, cyber-bullying, or retaliation, in our school buildings, on school grounds, or in school-related activities. We will investigate promptly all reports and complaints of bullying, cyberbullying, and retaliation, and take prompt action to end that behavior and restore the target’s sense of safety. We will support this commitment in all aspects of our school community, including curricula, instructional programs, staff development, extracurricular activities, and parent or guardian involvement. In cases of bullying, consequences may result in long-term suspension hearing and/or criminal prosecution.Cell Phone/Electronic DevicesIt is our aim to minimize distractions and maximize focus on learning; however, we understand that we live in a technological world, and we must learn how and when to use these devices appropriately. Therefore, we have limited the USE of personal electronic devices, included but not limited to: cell phones, earbuds, personal computers, tablets, smart watches, etc. to during lunch and afternoon advisory. All students who are carrying personal electronic devices must have them powered OFF and put AWAY during content classes. Students who are seen using a device during the “off hours,” will be asked to put it away. Repeated cell phone/electronic use will result in use of our Yellow Card/Red card behavioral protocol. Each classroom will also have a hanging cell phone lot for students to put their devices in. ON HoursDuring ON Hours, students are allowed to be actively using their phones; however, we cannot use them in disruptive ways. For example, playing music/videos for all to hear, calling multiple students over to crowd around a single phone, or if the content on the phone is either inappropriate or sparks disruption. If our phones cause a disruption during ON Hours, the phone will automatically be given to Principal Morrison or Dean Casmir to be picked up at the end of the day. 101504123825Afternoon AdvisoryLunchHallwaysBuses and down time on field tripsOFF Hours5207080645During OFF Hours, students are not allowed to actively use their phones in any capacity. Students can elect to turn their phones completely off or put them on silent and stow them away in a backpack, pocket, pencil case, purse, or any other enclosed space. Each classroom has a designated cell phone holder that students can elect to put in there if they know they might be tempted to check it. Cell phones cannot be out on desks, chairs, and laps nor can they be placed in a notebook/Chromebook or in one’s hand.Middle School hallways/spacesMorning Advisory ClassesAssembliesGuest SpeakersCounselingHow the Counseling Department supports the New Heights Charter School (NHCS) mission: The mission of NHCS is to prepare all students for college. Period. While this may sound like a relatively easy goal to achieve given quality instruction and exemplar teaching strategies, today’s generation of adolescents face unique obstacles, particularly with regard to their social/emotional development. These obstacles are often exacerbated by things such as peer pressure, social media, bullying, difficult family dynamics, and relational aggression, and they can make reaching a goal such as preparing for college tremendously difficult. The counseling department at New Heights Charter School is committed to providing the social/emotional support required for each child to set and attain high reaching goals, while helping students to develop a sense of resiliency that enables them persevere through challenging moments. Confidentiality: Confidentiality is extremely important in a relationship between a counselor and a student. Anything a student shares in a counseling session is to remain confidential, except in cases where specific individuals may have a need or a right to know, or if it is suspected or reported that the student or another minor is being harmed, or at risk of being harmed in any way. It is the counselor’s responsibility to limit access to personal information to those individuals who fall under this criterion. The following exceptions apply to confidentiality:Suspicion or reports of abuse and/or neglect. If the student appears to be at risk of harming him/herself or others. If a student discloses criminal activity. If the parent/guardian signs a release authorizing the school to provide information to a third party. If a Juvenile Court Judge orders the release of information. If a third party is in the room and the parent waives their right to confidentiality. Mandated Reporting: Section 51A of Massachusetts General Law states, “A mandated reporter who, in his professional capacity, has reasonable cause to believe that a child is suffering physical or emotional injury resulting from: (i) abuse inflicted upon him which causes harm or substantial risk of harm to the child's health or welfare, including sexual abuse; (ii) neglect, including malnutrition; (iii) physical dependence upon an addictive drug at birth, shall immediately communicate with the department orally and, within 48 hours, shall file a written report with the department detailing the suspected abuse or neglect; or (iv) being a sexually exploited child; or (v) being a human trafficking victim as defined by section 20M of chapter 233. All staff at New Heights Charter School are identified as mandated reporters under this law.Counseling Referrals:Parent Referrals: It is not feasible for School Adjustment Counselors to provide ongoing counseling services to all students. Nevertheless, parents or guardians who wish to refer their child for a counseling check-in may do so by contacting the Head of Counseling or the School Adjustment Counselor of the attending school. The frequency of the check-ins for parent/guardian referrals will be determined on a case by case basis depending upon the presenting circumstances. Reasons a parent or guardian might seek social/emotional support for their child include, but are not limited to:Difficult family dynamicsPeer conflict (bullying, relational aggression, etc.)The occurrence of a traumatic event (abuse/neglect, witness to community violence, witness to domestic violence, death of a family member, death of a friend, etc.)Sudden change in behavior at home and/or at school over a period of timeThe child has expressed thoughts of harming self or others Student (Self) Referrals: All New Heights Charter School Students have access to their respective school adjustment counselor should they need social/emotional support. Below is an outline of the counseling procedures that all New Heights students are expected to follow: Counseling request forms will be kept in the mailbox outside of the respective School Adjustment Counselors office.Students are only permitted to leave class to fill out a counseling request form during advisory, electives/enrichment, health/wellness, study hall, and intervention period. Students are not permitted to leave core content area classes to fill out a counseling request form. Completed counseling request forms will be placed in the lock box outside of the assigned School Adjustment Counselors office. Once a request form is submitted, students are expected to return to class. Under no circumstances should students wait outside of their classroom for an Adjustment Counselor to be available, unless specifically instructed to do so by a New Heights staff member, or in emergency situations where a student’s safety may be at risk. Submitting a request form does not guarantee that students’ will be seen the same day. School Adjustment Counselors will prioritize requests on a case by case basis, based on the need identified on the request form. Dress CodeNew Heights Charter School requires all students to be in full dress code while in the school building. Dress code is checked upon entry to the school. Students who arrive out of dress code will be sent to the Dean of Students and/or Principal to call home in order to obtain appropriate dress. During the school day, 7:40-4:15, students are expected to be in the following:Monday-Thursday: Full UniformTopsBottomsShoesAccessoriesPolo Shirt: White, Maroon, or Black polo shirt (short or long sleeve) with NHCSB logoNHCSB t-shirt (it does not need to have a collar)White long sleeve Oxford shirt with NHCSB logo Black cardigan/V-neck sweater/ vests with NHCSB logoBlack/maroon fleece zip ups with NHCSB logo. If they choose to bring a snack to school in the morning, they are free to eat it in class, Monday-Thursday, 9:45-10:00am during Period 2. Because eating a snack in class has the potential to become a source of distraction, there are a few basic guidelines around which snacks are okay and which are not: 5676900342900Single Serving – Since snack will be eaten during class, there is not an opportunity to share with friends and doing so would be distracting to the rest of the class. No candy during snack time- as it can cause distraction. Easy to Clean Up – Anything that cannot be cleaned up with a single napkin is not appropriate for this time of day. Thus foods such as the following are not allowed during this time: wings, messy fruit (e.g. peeling an orange), sunflower seeds, etc.Drinks – During snack time, students are only permitted to drink water out of a clear water bottle because we are in classrooms and surrounded by expensive technology! If a student is eating at another time, the teacher will follow the Code of Conduct Behavior Protocol and ask the student to put the snack away until the appropriate time. Please note that we cannot allow snacks to be eaten during transitions or in the hallways as this will create messes and most likely cause students to be tardy. Students must follow the nutrition restrictions and cannot have any snack containing peanuts in class. If a teacher sees a snack containing peanuts, he/she will take and dispose of it immediately. BEVERAGESBeveragesAcceptable Quick ReminderPut Away in Backpack & Addressed· Water is okay at (not on) student desks, but is defined as not carbonated, non-flavored, non-frozen, with a lid on it.· Water bottle in wrong place (on desk instead of floor) or near any form of technology. ·Drinking anything that is not plain water outside of lunch time. NOTE: Students may have a bottle of juice, soda, etc. with them because they plan on drinking it at lunch or at snack. Drinks during Snack Time: Due to the short period of time allotted for snack, students must drink out of a resealable bottle so that they may close it up if it is not finished. Opening a can during class is also disruptive to the learning environment and could lead to a mess. As a result, canned beverages are not allowed during snack.Grades/Grading Policy/GPAGrading & GPA ScaleLetter Grade:A+AA-B+BB-C+CC-D+DD-FNumeric:100-9796-9392-9089-8786-8382-8079-7776-7372-7069-6766-6362-6059-0Point Value4.04.003.673.333.002.672.332.001.671.331.000.670.003786188133350High School Categories/WeightsCategory%Homework15%Classwork10%Formative (quizzes, exit tickets)25%Summative (unit tests, projects)35%Semester Exam*15%Honor RollWe honor students’ academic achievement at the end of each quarter utilizing GPA (grade point average).
