High School Kinematics

Christina Spriggs

Title of activity

Kinematic Equations

Concept covered in activity

The main concept being introduced are the three main 1-D kinematic equations at a constant acceleration.

Grade level or other prerequisites for activity

High school

Standards:

National Standards: Grades 9-12. Content Standard B Physics: Motion and Forces

State Standards: high school, 1) physical science 1.Newton’s laws of motion and gravitation

Learning objectives:

Students should be able to demonstrate their understanding of the tree kinematic equations by completing calculations and relating/applying them to given situations.

Materials:

Science Notebook

Worksheet

Computer/ Internet/ Projector

Assessment:

Formative: Students will be informally assessed throughout the class as I listen to their group discussions while they try and figure out their given group problem and also when they are explaining their findings to their classmates. I can also gather this from what is being written in their science notebooks.

Summative: Student will also have a formal assessment that will be turned into me at the beginning of the next class. This will be a worksheet consisting of three graded kinematic problems. For extra credit, students will develop their own kinematic motion equation and solve it using one of the kinematic equations from this lesson.

Worksheet (assessment):

1) A race car starting from rest accelerates uniformly at a rate of 4.90 meters per second². What is the car’s speed after it has traveled 200 meters?

2) A car traveling on a straight road at 15.0 meters per second accelerates uniformly to a speed of 21.0 meters per second in 12.0 seconds. The total distance traveled by the car in this 12.0 second time interval is?

3) Ben is waiting at a stoplight. When it finally turns green, Ben accelerated from rest at a rate of a 6.00 m/s2 for a time of 4.10 seconds. Determine the displacement of Ben's car during this time period.

Anticipated misconceptions/alternative conceptions:

Acceleration is not always constant

That acceleration can be negative

Velocity and acceleration are negative or positive depending upon the directing

Accommodations/modifications of activity for any special needs students (special education, ELL, and gifted/talented):

Special need students will have an assigned aid to help them with group project and assessment if needed, but will still be included in a group throughout the lesson. If necessary, assessment will be altered according to needs.
