Building a Thesis Statement

For your Odyssey essay, you will need to write a solid thesis statement to tell your reader what you will be arguing in your paper.

Follow these steps to master your basic thesis statement structure:

Step One

What are the three subcategories you are going to use to support your argument? (Hint: If you are are arguing that Odysseus is a leader, then your subcategories might be: intelligence, confidence, and virtue).

1.___________________________________

2.___________________________________

3.___________________________________

Step Two

• Take a stand and begin to convince your reader of your argument

• Be short and concise

• Express one main idea- (Odysseus is a good leader).

• Use specific language- avoid the trap of becoming wordy and rambling

• Put your three subcategories in your thesis in an original, creative way.

Try to make this thesis statement interesting.

Example of a Weak thesis statement: Homer uses intelligence, confidence, and virtue to show that Odysseus is an epic hero.

Example of a solid thesis statement: (Do NOT use these for your thesis)

1. In “The Odyssey,” the main character Odysseus reveals he is a true leader through the intelligence he uses to get our of sticky situations, the confidence he exudes throughout his journey home from Troy, and the virtue of hospitality he upholds throughout the epic.

2. In epics, authors use several qualities to develop their heroes including intelligence, confidence, and virtue, and “The Odyssey” is no exception to the rule.

Now Try it Yourself!!!
