Ch. 1: Pleasantville Project Sociology
Movie Preview:
Pleasantville is a 1998 American fantasy comedy-drama film written, produced, and directed by Gary Ross. The film stars Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, William H. Macy, and Joan Allen, with Jeff Daniels, J. T. Walsh, Don Knotts, Paul Walker, and Jane Kaczmarek in supporting roles. It’s about two 1990's teenagers who find themselves in a 1950's sitcom where their influence begins to profoundly change the complacent world of Pleasantville. Director Gary Ross stated, "This movie is about the fact that personal repression gives rise to larger political oppression...That when we're afraid of certain things in ourselves or we're afraid of change, we project those fears on to other things, and a lot of very ugly social situations can develop.”
As you are watching this movie, your task is to take notes of the social changes that occurred in the town and explain them from the point of view of each of the three theoretical perspectives (Functionalist, Interactionist, and Conflict Perspectives). You will be writing a paper in which you will describe each of the three theoretical perspectives by giving examples from the movie to support it.
