Talking cash machine campaign transcript

[Susie] My name is Susie Simons I’m 33 years old. I have a six year old boy called Danny and a five year old little girl called Hannah.

Danny, please insert my card

When Danny was eight months old I lost full central vision in both eyes and I’m now registered blind.

[Danny] Cash only. Can I press “cash only”?

[Susie] All cash points are different. Even cash points that are the same bank but in different locations seem to have different information that you have to follow and it is an incredibly difficult thing to do.

Now the machine is already making a noise. Press cancel, press cancel!

The banks now have got their hands on new technology that would mean that they all have a headphone jack where we could just plug in our headphones and be able to hear all the information on the screen.

For me and many many other visually impaired people that would be a lifeline.

I get frightened. When it makes that noise it’s saying something and we don’t know what it says so basically I’m terrified that it will take my card and then I won’t be able to use it in a shop even, and then I’ll be in real trouble.

To be able to have this technology and it not be put in place is such a shame. We really need this in all cash points to make our lives a little less frustrating.
