UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending August 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 227,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 233,000 to 234,000. The 4-week moving average was 236,500, a decrease of 4,500 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 240,750 to 241,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending August 3, unchanged from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending August 3 was 1,864,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised down by 4,000 from 1,875,000 to 1,871,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,862,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average. This is the highest level for this average since November 27, 2021 when it was 1,928,000. The previous week's average was revised down by 1,000 from 1,862,000 to 1,861,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 199,530 in the week ending August 10, a decrease of 4,500 (or -2.2 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 1,874 (or 0.9 percent) from the previous week. There were 213,803 initial claims in the comparable week in 2023. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent during the week ending August 3, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled 1,888,540, a decrease of 17,920 (or -0.9 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 11,225 (or -0.6 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.2 percent and the volume was 1,814,133.
The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending July 27 was 1,932,117, a decrease of 28,380 from the previous week. There were 1,834,506 weekly claims filed for benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2023. No state was triggered "on" the Extended Benefits program during the week ending July 27. Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 332 in the week ending August 3, an increase of 20 from the prior week. There were 432 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 41 from the preceding week. There were 4,852 continued weeks claimed filed by former Federal civilian employees the week ending July 27, an increase of 83 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 4,669, an increase of 148 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 27 were in New Jersey (2.8), Rhode Island (2.6), Puerto Rico (2.5), California (2.3), Minnesota (2.0), Connecticut (1.9), Pennsylvania (1.9), Massachusetts (1.8), Illinois (1.7), Nevada (1.7), New York (1.7), and Washington (1.7). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending August 3 were in New Jersey (+1,080), California (+694), Wisconsin (+672), New York (+607), and Illinois (+579), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-7,430), Texas (-5,180), Missouri (-3,716), Virginia (-745), and Georgia (-493).
