Photo Restoration

To add to your skills in digital imaging, you need to acquire/practice your skills for photo restoration. Photo restoration is a popular skill necessary for people to fix old photos from the past. You never know when you’ll need to fix a photo for yourself, a family member, or for a job. Also, having this skill will enhance your resume when applying for photography stores or camera shops. This is a must have skill and necessary for any serious photographer looking to go to the next level.

For the next assignment, please find an old photo with major blemishes (cracks, fading, tearing, or other issues that keep it from looking new.) The photo can come from your family collection or someone you know. Please, no pictures off of the internet. When you are finished, plan on handing your finished work to the owner of the photo. Plan on bringing in at least 3 photos so that one can be selected as the best choice and approved by the teacher. Once you have selected your photo,

Follow these steps.

1. Scan your photo in a 300 dpi (600dpi for very small photos) either at home or school.

2. Open the photo with photoshop.

3. Use the levels, brightness/contrast, the dodge/burn tool, color balance to get the correct levels for the picture. Keep in mind the simple rules of photography with keeping true whites, blacks, and grays in your black and white photos. Also remove any color stains in the picture if the picture is starting to brown on the edges.

4. To fix scratches in the surface, plan on using the healing brush, the patch tool, and the clone stamp.

5. You can use the selection tools along with feathering an edge to select certain parts to modify.

6. Once you finish, plan on showing your teacher the final touch up for approval.

7. Print out your final restoration at the same size as the original photo. (optional)

The goal is to restore the photo to its original state, not do anything creative with its composition nor any filter and color special effects. This project works very well with old black and white photos or sepia tone photos. Color photos can also be restored, but are much more challenging. Its up to you if you want to try to restore a color photo. If you have any questions, please ask.

1. Practice with the example that is on the teacher website 50 pts.

2. Complete your final picture with an old photo that the teacher will approve. Please see teacher if you don’t have old photos to restore. Completing this can make a great present for a holiday or birthday gift for a family member. 50 pts.
