Beginning Composition Researched Essay of Argumentation: 7501000 words

Final Draft: 6 October 2017

The essay begins with you choosing a topic. Go to this website and peruse, finding a topic/attached article that interests you.

Step One: Choose three possible topics. Click on each one, and then find the professional article linked within the student sample. The professional article is the one from which you will work. Ultimately, you will be narrowing it down to one topic, but no two students in the class will be doing the same topic, so have a couple topics/choices you like. Bring your possibilities to class to conference with your teacher.

Step Two: Once your topic is approved, you will write a proposal with the following:

1. A rhetorical precis of the professional article from NY Times. 2. Links to at least 4-5 sources so we can evaluate which articles are credible and useful. 3. A working thesis statement (this can be revised/refined later). 4. A parent signature, indicating they approve of your topic.

Step Three: Write a rhetorical precis for each article you will use.

Step Four: Create a Works Cited page with all of the sources you plan on using (you must have at least three sources.) You will need to revise this after you actually write the paper to ensure you are actually citing the pieces on this page.

Step Five: Write the paper. We will spend a lot of time in class, learning the ways to integrate evidence and argue effectively. Lessons will include:

Rhetorical Precis Rhetoric and Argumentation: Ethos, Pathos, Logos Claim and Counterclaim SOAPSTONE articles/Evaluating Evidence Incorporation and Integration of Evidence: Quoting, Paraphrasing and
