GAME 22
Augsburg College (6-10 MIAC/8-13)
at
Concordia College (9-7 MIAC/11-10)
February 9, 2005
Memorial Auditorium
Moorhead, MN
GAME TIME: 7:30 pm
SERIES: Augsburg leads 70-58
SERIES STARTED: 1924
EARLIER THIS YEAR: Earlier this season Augsburg held on to take a 76-73 decision. The Cobbers had a chance to tie the game in the waning seconds but Keith Eckhoff’s shot hit the rim and fell away from the basket. Eckhoff had a team-high 18 points. Dan Graf and Lucas Olson-Patterson did most of the damage for the Auggies. The pair scored 53 of the team's 76 points (69.7%). Graf knocked down a career-high 27 points and Olson-Patterson added 26.
LAST YEAR: Last season the teams split the series with each team winning on the opposing team’s home court. The Cobbers won 69-56 in Minneapolis before losing 68-67 in Moorhead. In the first game, Concordia outscored Augsburg 37-25 in the second half to grab the win. The rematch saw Concordia rally from an 18-point deficit with 15:33 left in the second half, but fell one point short as Jonathan Gholson sank one of two free throws with
six seconds remaining to give Augsburg the one-point victory.
SERIES HISTORY: Concordia has won four of the past seven games in the series including the game played earlier this year. The Cobbers won four of five from 2001 to 2004. Before that time, Augsburg had run off eight straight wins.

THE INSIDE SCOOP
CONCORDIA (9-7 MIAC/11-10)
Tonight’s Gameday program theme will focus on the next biggest college basketball game being played tonight. Just a scant 1,484 miles from Memorial Auditorium, the best rivalry in all of NCAA Division I is taking place. Duke hosts North Carolina in the ultimate cross-town grudge match. Here’s hoping for a Cobber/Dukie sweep! Answers to questions on back page.
TOURNEY TIME
Concordia can stamp their card for the postseason tonight by beating Augsburg. If the Cobbers beat the Auggies, Concordia will clinch a spot in the MIAC playoffs. The worst the Cobbers could finish with a win tonight is 10-10 and the best Augsburg could climb to if they lose tonight is 9-11. If Concordia makes the playoffs, it would be the second consecutive season for the Cobbers in the postseason, the first time since the 1996-97 season that Concordia has made the playoffs in consecutive years. It would also be the third tourney appearance in the past five years for Duane Siverson’s crew. Pop Quiz I: When was the last time Duke did not make the NCAA playoffs?
MR. 1000!!
Concordia senior Soren Nelson (Twin Valley, Minn./Norman County East) needs only 12 points to become the ninth player in the history of Cobber men’s basketball to break the 1,000-point barrier for a career. Nelson is averaging 14.4 points per game this season and has recorded 988 points in his 3+ seasons in maroon and gold. Last year as a junior he averaged 14.3 points per game and was named to the MIAC All-Conference Team. Pop Quiz II: Who is the last player from either Duke or UNC to reach the 1,000-point milestone?
CAMERON INDOOR STADIUM NORTH!
Memorial Auditorium has become one of the toughest places to play in the MIAC in the past few seasons. The Cobbers have won seven of their eight home games in the MIAC so far this season. In the past two seasons, the Cobbers have posted a 14-4 record at home in the MIAC. They are currently averaging 76.2 points per game at home as opposed to 68.3 on the road. Pop Quiz III: How many games has Duke lost at home in the past five years?
THE INSIDE SCOOP
AUGSBURG (6-10 MIAC/8-13)
YOUTH IS SERVED
If Augsburg’s coach looks like just another one of the players that is because interim head coach Gabe Ziegler is only two years removed from graduating from college. Ziegler took over the reins of the Auggies when longtime coach Brian Ammann stepped down on January 31. Ammann resigned due to personal and family commitments. Ammann compiled a 213-202 record in his 17 seasons as Augsburg’s men's basketball coach, the second-most victories in school history. Ziegler has officially been at the helm for three games and has posted a 1-2 record. Pop Quiz IV: When did Coach “K” take over at Duke and how old was he when he started?
L-O-P IS H-O-T!
Augsburg is led by senior forward Lucas Olson-Patterson. Olson Patterson currently leads the MIAC in scoring in conference games with a 21.5 points per game average. He recently extended his double-figure scoring streak to 28 straight games with his eighth double-double of the season in Augsburg's win over Hamline on Monday. In his two seasons at Augsburg, Olson-Patterson has scored in double figures in 40 of his 43 games, including 14 double-doubles. Against the Cobbers in the first game this season he was 10-of-18 from the floor and scored 26 points. Pop Quiz V: Name the UNC players who have had the most games scoring in double figures in a season and a career?
CHUCKIN’ IT FROM THE CHEAP SEATS
One of the problem spots for the Auggies this season has been their offense and defense from behind the arc. Augsburg currently ranks last in the MIAC in 3-point field goal percentage. That doesn’t stop the Auggie bombers from hoisting up the three’s. Augsburg is fourth in the league in 3-point shots attempted. The Auggies also rank last in the league in 3-point field goal percentage defense. Opposing teams are hitting 40.4% of their shots from behind the arc.

Cobber Men’s Basketball Coach
Duane Siverson
Duane Siverson has been the
Running Cobber men's
basketball head coach since
1991. He has a 313-211 career
coaching record, which makes
him the all-time winningest
basketball coach in school history.
In his 13 years as the Cobber men's head coach he has already put together three of the four winningest seasons in Cobber history. His 1994-95 team went 18-7 (matching the second best win total in school history).
Last year, the 2003-04 squad made the conference playoffs for the second time in the last four years. The team finished the year with an 18-8 overall mark and a 14-6 record in conference play. Both win totals were in the top five in school history. As a team, Concordia finished the '03-'04 campaign by being ranked in the top ten in Division III in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and 3-point field goal percentage - a first in Cobber men's basketball history.
He served as an assistant coach for the Running Cobbers from 1978-1984, during which time the Cobbers captured two MIAC titles. In 1984 Siverson took over as head coach of the Cobber women's program and guided them to four MIAC titles, the 1988 NCAA Division III National Championship and seven NCAA tournament appearances. He was NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 1988. He became head coach of the Running Cobber program in 1991.
Siverson was raised in Casselton, ND, and later moved to Spokane, WA, where he graduated from high school. He received his B.A. degree from Yankton College in 1978 and earned honors for both academic and athletic achievements.
He and his wife Bonnie, and their two sons, Tyler and Jordan, live in south Moorhead.

Concordia 54 at Carleton 74 - Game Recap
NORTHFIELD-- The Concordia playoff train was momentarily derailed after dropping a 74-54 decision at Carleton on Saturday. The Cobbers entered the game with a chance to tie Carleton in the standings and move to within one game of clinching a conference playoff spot. Instead they left Northfield scratching their heads and hoping to regroup in the final four games of the season.
The loss drops Concordia to 9-7 in league play and 11-10 overall. They are currently tied with Macalester for fifth place in the MIAC. Carleton strengthened its bid for one of the six spots in the playoffs. The Knights are now 11-5 in conference play and 13-8 overall.
The Cobbers were done in by an ice-cold shooting touch from the outside. Concordia made only 1-of-14 (7.1%) shots from 3-point range for the game. From the floor they shot 40.0% (20-of-50). Carleton used the exact opposite formula to come away with the 20-point win. The Knights made 10-of-20 (50.0%) shots from behind the arc and only 49.2% (29-of-59) from the floor.
The frontcourt pair of Soren Nelson and Luke Linz led the Cobbers in scoring. Each player finished the game with 13 points. For Nelson, it brings his career point total to 988. He only needs 12 points to become the ninth player in Concordia men's basketball history to break the 1,000-point barrier for a career. Linz also finished with a game-high eight rebounds. Keith Eckhoff was the only other Concordia player to crack the 10-point plateau. He finished with 10 points and three assists.
Carleton placed four of their starting five in double figures in points. Anthony Baquero went 5-of-10 from behind the arc on his way to a game-high 17 points. Jake Phillips was a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range and added 16 points. Kyle Beste and Tommy Drake each chipped in 14 points to round out the double-digit brigade for the Knights.
