1.03 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Provide manufacturer’s descriptive product literature for sign types specified, including components and accessories.

A. Shop Drawings: Provide manufacturer’s detail of construction relative to materials, dimensions of individual components, profiles and finishes:

1. Show individual sign types, graphics, typestyles, colors, sign dimensions and profiles. Show mounting methods, locations, accessories and installation guidelines.

2. Provide message list for each sign required, including large-scale details of wording and lettering layout where signs contain more than one word or more than one number.

C. Samples: Provide a single unit sample of each sign type to verify colors, dimensions, profiles, finishes, method of installation and quality.

D. Sustainable Design Data: Provide material, process and disposition of waste data relating to the material used to manufacture tactile signage.

1. Recycled Content: Indicate the percentage of post-industrial recyclable content in material used during the manufacturing of tactile signage.

2. Low Emitting Materials: Indicate the (VOC) Volatile Organic Compound limits for paint finishes used during the manufacturing of tactile signage.

3. Waste: Indicate the percentage of biodegradable waste and method of disposal of scrap material generated during the manufacturing of tactile signage.

1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Use a single manufacturing source to produce tactile signage that is finished and ready for installation.

B. Manufacturer Qualification: Use a tactile sign manufacturer with at least ten years experience in the fabrication of architectural and ADA signs.

C. Installer Qualifications: Use a sign installation contractor that is specialized and experienced in work similar to the sign installation requirements for this project.

2.02 DESCRIPTION

A. Produce tactile signage to meet the following regulatory requirements:

1. 2010 Standards for Title II and III Facilities, 2004 ADAAG.

2. ICC/ANSI A117.1-2009.

3. California Department of General Services, Division of State Architect - 2011 California Access Compliance Reference Manual.

4. State building code provisions as adopted by regulatory authorities having jurisdiction.

2.03 MATERIALS

A. General: Produce tactile signage that complies with requirements indicated for material, thickness, colors, design, shapes, sizes and details of construction.

1. Produce tactile signs to comply with applicable provisions of the ADAAG and ICC/ANSI A117.1 - 2009 standards including 0.031 inch raised pictograms, text and Grade II Braille characters.

2. Produce panel signs to remain flat under installed conditions and within a tolerance of plus or minus 0.015 inches when measured diagonally.

B. Sign Type: Produce tactile signage using one or more of the following materials and fabrication processes.

1. [Photopolymer] tactile signs fabricated from manufacturer’s list of applicable photopolymer sign materials.

[a] Fabricate tactile sign panel using a nylon interior grade photopolymer with a non-glare clear (UV) Ultraviolet resistant (PETG) Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol sign base. Use material that has an overall base thicknesses of [0.040] [0.060] [0.080] [0.118] [0.190] [0.236] inches. [Surface Paint] [Back Paint] tactile sign panel with an acrylic polyurethane finish and a UV resistant clear topcoat. Text, pictograms and symbol are raised with surface applied color.

[1] Install 0.118 inch thick PETG sign base into a 0.510 inch thick [Black] [Grey] [Beige] [Brown] [Dark Grey] [White] [Surface Painted] injection molded sign frame.

[2] Install [0.040] [0.060] inch thick PETG sign base into a curved aluminum sign frame.

[3] Install [0.118] [0.190] [0.236] acrylic sign base to wall using 0.625 inch diameter, 0.500 inch deep [Satin Clear] [Surface Painted] aluminum sign posts.

[b] Fabricate tactile sign panel using a nylon interior grade photopolymer with a thin sheet steel sign base. Use material that has an overall base thickness of 0.010 inches. Surface paint tactile sign panel with an acrylic polyurethane finish and a UV resistant clear topcoat. Text, pictograms and symbols are raised with surface applied color.

[1] Apply steel backed tactile sign panel [Flush] [With 0.250 Inch Reveal] to a 0.125 inch thick [Black] [Surface Painted] [Back Painted Clear] acrylic backer.

[2] Apply steel backed tactile sign panel to a 0.510 inch thick [Black] [Grey] [Beige] [Brown] [Dark Grey] [White] [Surface Painted] injection molded sign frame.

[c] Fabricate tactile sign panel using a synthetic exterior grade photopolymer with a thin sheet aluminum sign base. Use material that has an overall base thickness of 0.016 inches. Surface paint tactile sign panel with an acrylic polyurethane finish and a UV resistant clear topcoat. Text, pictograms and symbols are raised with surface applied color.

[1] Apply aluminum backed tactile sign panel [Flush] [With 0.250 Inch Reveal] to a 0.125 inch thick [Black] [Surface Painted] [Back Painted Clear] acrylic backer.

[2] Apply aluminum backed tactile sign panel to a 0.510 inch thick [Black] [Grey] [Beige] [Brown] [Dark Grey] [White] [Surface Painted] injection molded sign frame.

[d] Fabricate tactile sign panel using a nylon interior grade photopolymer with a non-glare clear UV resistant PETG sign base. Use material that has an overall base thickness of 0.060 inches. Subsurface paint a 0.375 inch wide border along four sides. Apply sign base to a 0.125 inch thick [Black] [Surface Painted] [Back Painted Clear] acrylic backer with 0.250 inch wide, 0.060 inch thick black urethane foam adhesive on three sides forming a message insert pocket. Sign base has a UV resistant clear topcoat. Text, pictograms and symbols are raised with surface applied color.

[1] Insert 0.020 inch thick polystyrene with [Surface Applied Adhesive Backed Vinyl] [Screenprinted] text, pictograms and symbols into sign frame pocket.

[2] Insert 80 pound InkJet / Laser printable textured and perforated paper stock with text, pictograms and symbols into sign frame pocket.

[a] Fabricate tactile sign panel using a non-glare clear cast acrylic sign base with an overall thickness of [0.125] [0.250] inches. Subsurface paint with an acrylic polyurethane finish. Apply text, pictograms and symbols to tactile sign panel base using a (CNC) Computer Numerical Control router cut solid core modified acrylic engraving material with an overall thickness of 0.030 inches. Select text, pictogram and symbol material color from manufacturer’s list of standard colors. Apply Grade II Braille to tactile sign panel base using 0.060 inch diameter [Clear Acrylic] [Black Acrylic] [White Acrylic] [Brass] [Stainless Steel] Raster spheres embedded 0.030 inches into sign base.

[1] Install 0.125 inch thick acrylic sign base into a 0.510 inch thick [Black] [Grey] [Beige] [Brown] [Dark Grey] [White] [Surface Painted] injection molded sign frame.

[b] Fabricate tactile sign panel using a solid core modified acrylic engraving material sign base with an overall thickness of 0.125 inches. Select base material color from manufacturer’s list of standard colors. Apply text, pictograms and symbols to tactile sign panel base using a CNC router cut solid core modified acrylic engraving material with an overall thickness of 0.030 inches. Select text, pictogram and symbol material color from manufacturer’s list of standard colors. Apply Grade II Braille to tactile sign panel base using 0.060 inch diameter [Clear Acrylic] [Black Acrylic] [White Acrylic] [Brass] [Stainless Steel] Raster spheres embedded 0.030 inches into sign base.

[1] Install 0.125 inch thick modified acrylic engraving material sign base into a 0.510 inch thick [Black] [Grey] [Beige] [Brown] [Dark Grey] [White] [Surface Painted] injection molded sign frame.

[c] Fabricate tactile sign panel using a 3030 clear acrylic sign base with an overall thickness of [0.125] [0.250] inches. Apply text, pictograms and symbols to tactile sign panel base using a CNC router cut solid core modified acrylic engraving material with an overall thickness of 0.030 inches. Select text, pictogram and symbol material color from manufacturer’s list of standard colors. Apply Grade II Braille to tactile sign panel base using 0.060 inch diameter [Clear Acrylic] [Black Acrylic] [White Acrylic] [Brass] [Stainless Steel] Raster spheres embedded 0.030 inches into sign base.

[1] Install acrylic sign base to wall using 0.625 inch diameter, 0.500 inch deep [Satin Clear] [Surface Painted] aluminum sign posts.

[d] Fabricate tactile sign panel using a P95 matte clear acrylic sign base with an overall thickness of [0.125] [0.250] inches. Apply text, pictograms and symbols to tactile sign panel base using a CNC router cut solid core modified acrylic engraving material with an overall thickness of 0.030 inches. Select text, pictogram and symbol material color from manufacturer’s list of standard colors. Apply Grade II Braille to tactile sign panel base using 0.060 inch diameter [Clear Acrylic] [Black Acrylic] [White Acrylic] [Brass] [Stainless Steel] Raster spheres embedded 0.030 inches into sign base.

[1] Install P95 matte clear acrylic sign base to wall using 0.625 inch diameter, 0.500 inch deep [Satin Clear] [Surface Painted] aluminum sign posts.

[e] Fabricate tactile sign panel using a non-glare clear cast acrylic sign base with an overall thickness of 0.125 inches. Thermal fuse a full-color printed graphic to the back of the tactile sign panel base. Apply text, pictograms and symbols to tactile sign panel base using CNC router cut solid core modified acrylic engraving material with an overall thickness of 0.030 inches. Select text, pictogram and symbol material color from manufacturer’s list of standard colors. Apply Grade II Braille to tactile sign panel base using 0.060 inch diameter [Clear Acrylic] [Black Acrylic] [White Acrylic] [Brass] [Stainless Steel] Raster spheres embedded 0.030 inches into sign base.

[1] Install 0.125 inch thick non-glare clear cast acrylic sign base into a 0.510 inch thick [Black] [Grey] [Beige] [Brown] [Dark Grey] [White] [Surface Painted] injection molded sign frame.

[2] Install non-glare clear cast acrylic sign base to wall using 0.625 inch diameter, 0.500 inch deep [Satin Clear] [Surface Painted] aluminum sign posts.

3. [Injection Molded Plastic] tactile signs are manufacturer’s standard product as follows:

[a] Select tactile sign message from manufacturer’s list of standard injection molded colorized (HIPS) High Impact Polystyrene tactile signs, with an 8.00 inch x 8.00 inch tactile sign base, an overall thickness of 0.125 inches with 0.310 inch radius corners and an eggshell finish of less than 15 degrees gloss. Select sign base from manufacturer’s list of standard colors. Text is separated from pictograms and symbols with a 0.095 inch graphic line. Text, pictograms, symbols and graphic line are raised and hotstamped white.

[1] Install 0.125 inch thick injection molded HIPS sign base into a 0.510 inch thick [Black] [Grey] [Beige] [Brown] [Dark Grey] [White] [Surface Painted] injection molded sign frame.

[b] Select tactile sign message from manufacturer’s list of standard injection molded clear (ABS) acrylonitrile butadiene styrene tactile signs, with an 8.00 inch x 8.00 inch tactile sign base, an overall thickness of 0.125 inches with 0.310 inch radius corners and an eggshell finish of less than 15 degrees gloss. [Surface Paint] [Back Paint] sign base with an acrylic polyurethane paint finish. Text is separated from pictograms and symbols with a .095 inch graphic line. Text, pictograms, symbols and graphic line are raised and hotstamped white.

[1] Install 0.125 inch thick injection molded ABS sign base into a 0.510 inch thick [Black] [Grey] [Beige] [Brown] [Dark Grey] [White] [Surface Painted] injection molded sign frame.

4. [Etched Zinc] tactile signs are manufacturer’s standard product as follows:

Chemically deep etch Zinc sign base with an overall thickness of [0.064] [0.125] inches. Select form manufacturer’s list of standard sign base background surface textures. Surface paint tactile sign panel with an acrylic polyurethane paint finish. Text, pictograms, symbols and Grade II Braille color is [Unfinished Zinc] [Surface Applied Polyurethane Paint Color As Specified].

5. Precision laser cut, CNC router cut, saw cut or shear tactile sign panels to achieve dimensional shapes and sizes required or select from manufacturer’s list of standard sizes. Tactile signs have [Square] [Radius] corners.

6. Specify text as [Centered] [Positioned as Specified] with corresponding Grade II Braille. Produce tactile signs to conform to ADA Accessibility Guidelines and ICC/ANSI A117.1 – 2009, section 703.3 and 703.5, unless otherwise specified.

7. Specify pictograms and symbols as [Centered] [Positioned as Specified]. Produce tactile signs to conform to ADA Accessibility Guidelines and ICC/ANSI A117.1 – 2009, section 703.3 and 703.5, unless otherwise specified.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Examine wall surfaces, substrate areas and conditions with the Installer present, for compliance with the requirements for installation guidelines, tolerances and other conditions affecting the performance of work.

B. Verify that items including anchor inserts and electrical power provided under other sections of work are sized and located to accommodate sign installation.

C. Examine supporting members to ensure that surfaces are at elevations indicated or required to comply with the authorities having jurisdiction and are free from dirt and other deleterious matter.

D. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. General: Locate signs and accessories where indicated, using mounting methods of types described and in compliance with manufacturer’s written instructions.

1. Install signs level, plumb and at heights indicated, with sign surfaces free from distortion and other defects in appearance.

2. Install signs in accordance with ADAAG and ICC/ANSI A117.1 – 2009, section 703.4, unless otherwise specified.

B. Wall Mounted Tactile Signs: Attach Tactile Signage to wall surfaces using the methods indicated.

1. Foam-Tape: Use double-sided foam tape to mount signs to smooth, non-porous surfaces.

2. Silicone Adhesive: Use liquid silicone to attach signs to irregular, porous or vinyl covered surfaces. Use doubled-sided foam tape to hold sign in place while adhesive cures.

3. Mechanical Fasteners: Use non-removable mechanical fasteners placed through predrilled holes. Attach signs with fasteners and anchors suitable for secure attachment to substrate.

4. Bracket-Mounted Units: Provide manufacturer’s standard brackets, fittings and hardware to install signs that project at right angles from walls and ceilings. Attach brackets and fittings securely to walls and ceilings with concealed fasteners and anchoring devices to comply with manufacturer’s written instructions.

3.03 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. After installation, clean soiled sign surfaces according to manufacturers’ written instructions. Protect signs from damage until acceptance by Owner.
