2. Each group is responsible for ONE of the pictures.

3. Based on what they have heard in Task 3, each group is to describe in Māori the

Objective: To solve the fox, chicken, corn problem.

1. Organise students into pairs.

2. Write this problem on the whiteboard or paper and give to each pair of students.

3. Ask students to solve the problem – i te reo Māori

‘A man wants to transport a fox, a chicken and some corn across a river. He has a rowboat, but it can only carry the man and one other item. If the fox and the chicken are alone together, the fox will eat the chicken. If the chicken and the corn are alone together, the chicken will eat the corn. How does the man do it?’

‘E hiahia ana tētahi tangata ki te kawe i tētahi pōkiha, i tētahi heihei, me ētahi kānga ki tarawāhi o te awa. He waka hoe tōna, engari kotahi anake te mea e taea e ia te hari. Ki te haere tahi ko te pōkiha me te heihei, ka kaingia te heihei. Ki te haere tahi te heihei me te kānga, ka pau te kānga i te heihei te kai. Me pēhea e taea e te tangata ngā mea katoa te hari atu?’

Answer

He takes the chicken and then comes back. He then takes the fox and brings the chicken back. He then takes the corn and comes back. Finally he takes the chicken.
