Before Aug. 28? end of classSection 2? Before Sept. 2nd?end of classSection 3? Before Sept. 4th?end of classLa Routine Test & Listening test Sept. 5th?end of class?** Quizzes and Tests will only be released after certain conditions are met. ?I will speak more about these later tomorrow in the NEWS.?In Section 1 of La Routine we will be reviewing important ideas such as cognate patterns, accents, and the Roman occupation of Gaul (now France).? Our new content is the skill of learning how to tell about things that we do daily as a part of our routine that involve taking care of ourselves.? The verbs used to express these actions are special; in French they take on a special "helper" part before the verb in the sentence that is a pronoun designed to help the listener understand that the activity is being done by the person to their own body.?**Please study this chart and then open the power point attached along with the second sound file for an explanation. ?Reflexive verbsReflexive verbs are roughly the equivalent of English verbs involving -self or -selves, such as he hurt?himself, they weighed?themselves, we prepared?ourselves?etc. In these verbs, the subject and object actually represent the same thing or person. In French, reflexive verbs have an extra object pronoun inserted between the subject and the verb. In this case, some grammars call this the reflexive pronoun. Depending on the subject (je, tu etc), the reflexive pronoun is as shown in the following table:SubjectReflexivepronounExamplejemeje me lèveI get uptutetu te lèvesyou get upilelleonseil se lèvehe gets upelle se lèveshe gets upon se lèvewe get upnousnousnous nous levonswe get upvousvousvous vous levezyou (all) get upilsellesseils/elles se lèventthey get up?In this example, we use the verb lever, literally meaning to lift. So without the reflexive pronoun, for example, je lève would mean?I lift. When used reflexively— i.e. when we insert the extra pronoun me, te etc— the verb literally means?I lift myself, you lift yourself?etc, and is the way that in French you usually say?I get up?etc. The infinitive of reflexive verbsThe infinitive of reflexive verbs is formed with?se?plus the infinitive of the underlying verb. So for example,?se lever?is the form meaning "to get up" (literally "to lift oneself"). In many vocab books or dictionaries, this is how you'll find reflexive verbs listed. If the verb has se or s' before it, that tells you that you need to make its forms with me, te etc as in the example above.me, te, se before a vowelThe pronouns that end in -e have shortened written forms before a vowel: m', t', s', and the final -e is never pronounced in these cases. For example, the verb s'appeler meaning?to be called?looks as follows:je m'appelle JeanI'm called Jean, my name's Jeancomment tu t'appelles?what are you called?, what's your name?elle s'appelle Julieshe's called Julie?Taken from: "helpers" me, te, se, nous, vous, and se precede the reflexive verb.? Then the verb is conjugated as normal.?Please listen to the podcast I have attached as a soundfile for more explanation.? Also visit the link that I have inserted to our second homepage that will give you more games to practice this new idea.pages/solbergfrench.html?For today, please be sure to be on pace to finish all section 1 assignments of La Routine assigned so far: ?Mrs. Solberg, Let me tell you, DISCUSSION 1A, DROPBOX Writing 1B.
