3D Printed Macroscale AFM Model Build InstructionsSection I: Main AssemblyParts Required:2x feet1x stage rail1x probe assembly frame1x cantilever holder2x cantilever adjustment screws (1 ? inch 6-32 round-head machine screws) with nuts1x cantilever attachment screw (? inch 6-32 round-head machine screw) with nut1x cantilever (see instructions for cantilever assembly)1x laser clamp screwAssembly:Snap feet posts (1) into bottom of stage rail (2).Screw a nut one quarter of the way onto one of the cantilever adjustment screws (5). Then insert the head of the machine screw into the front slot of the cantilever holder (4).With cantilever holder attached, slide the nut into the front slot at the back of the probe assembly frame (3).Screw a nut one quarter of the way onto the second cantilever adjustment screw (5). Then slide the nut and screw head into their respective slots at the rear of the probe assembly frame (3) and cantilever holder (4).Turn cantilever adjustment screws (5) to raise the cantilever holder (4) until the spines of the holder slide into the rails of the probe assembly frame (3).NOTE: In order to assemble, and for smooth adjustment of the cantilever height and angle, it may be necessary to sand down any residual burs from printing that are left on cantilever holder spines:Attach the cantilever (7) by inserting the cantilever attachment screw (6) through the holes in both the cantilever and the cantilever holder (4). Tighten as necessary.Snap legs of probe assembly frame (3) into stage rail to complete main body assembly. Screw laser clamp screw (8) into front of probe assembly frame (3).Section II: Z Stage Assembly:Parts Required:1x Z stage1x Z stage base1x Z stage footing1x Z stage knob4x 6-32 nuts1x Z positioning screw (1 ? inch 6-23 round-head machine screw)Assembly:Superglue nylon nut (5) into Z stage knob (4). Be sure not to get any glue inside the threads of the nut or in the hole of the Z stage knob.Screw Z positioning screw (6) through the hole in the back of Z stage knob (4), traversing through the nylon nut (5) until snugly fit.Place nylon nut into the fitting on the stage.Thread Z positioning screw through bottom of hole in stage footing. Thread a nut onto the Z positioning screw until is secures the Z positioning screw snugly against the bottom of the footing without play, but still allowing it to freely turn. Either glue this nut onto the screw (NOT to the footing), or thread another nut onto the screw to lock them together in place.Snap the footing (3) onto the bottom of the Z stage base (2) and glue together.Thread the tail of the Z positioning screw (6) into the nut of the Z stage (1) and tighten until the Z stage slides into the slot in the Z stage base (2), ensuring that the flat sides of the Z stage slide against the slot walls of the Z stage base, not the open and rounded sides. Section III: XY Stage Assembly (Student Designed Optional Add-on)Parts Required:1x main assembly (see Section I for assembly instructions)1x XY stage1x XY rail2x knobs9x 6-32 nuts2x XY positioning screws (3-inch 6-32 round-head machine screws)Assembly:Insert nut (5) into fitting on the bottom of the stage (2) (note: this can be a tight fit. If using nylon nuts you can sand or file down the sides for an easier fit.).Insert nuts (5) into fittings on both sides of the XY rail (3).Insert a nut (5) into the fittings on each of the turn knob (4) and glue in place, being careful not to get any glue into the threads of the nuts.Ensure XY rail (3) fits easily into lip of the main assembly stage rail (1) and ensure XY rail (3) slides un-impinged along the lip from end to end. If so, leave the rail (3) in place and proceed to step 5. If not, sand or file edges of stage base and sand lip of platform until the two pieces fit together and can slide easily.Thread one of the XY positioning screws (6) through the holes on the main assembly stage rail (1), traversing through both nuts in the fittings on the bottom of the XY rail (3). The round-head of the screw (6) should be comfortably resting on the outer wall of the platform top as shown in the image.Thread two nuts (5) onto the tail end of the positioning screw (6), locking them together (a “locking thread”) so that they rest against the outside of the main assembly stage rail (1). They should rest against the stage rail loosely enough to allow free turning of the screw, but snugly enough that there is no play in the positioning - otherwise this will introduce hysteresis.Test your positioning screw (6) locking thread by rotating the tail of the screw with pliers. The XY rail (3) should freely move from end to end on the main assembly stage rail (1), with each direction of the positioning screw turning.Once you have confirmed a successful locking thread, screw one of the knobs (4) onto the tail of the positioning screw (6), tightening until snug while using a screwdriver to brace the positioning screw.Similar to the procedure for the XY rail above, place the XY stage (2) onto XY rail (3). Thread a positioning screw (6) through the holes on either side of the XY rail (3), traversing the nut on the bottom of the XY stage (2) between the holes.Again, ensure free movement of XY stage (2) along XY rail (3). Stage should move freely across the XY rail (3) from end to end. If free movement is observed, move on to the next step. If not, sand or file to fit. Lock thread two nuts (5) onto the tail end of the positioning screw (6) as before, so they rest against the outside of the XY rail (3). Test to ensure proper movement of the XY stage (2) as was done before with the XY rail (3).Once you have confirmed a successful locking thread, screw the other knob (4) onto the tail of the positioning screw (6), tightening until snug while using a screwdriver to brace the positioning screw..Section IV: Completed Models:Z Stage Full Build: XY Stage Full Build: ................
