EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Mahanoy City Market Street Culvert SR 7411 is comprised of the superstructure replacement of two 300-foot long sections of the 6,600-foot long culvert carrying Market Street over Mahanoy Creek in Mahanoy City Borough, Schuylkill County, PA. The project included the construction of a reinforced concrete slab spanning Mahanoy Creek and two open channel sanitary sewer troughs. In addition, the project upgraded sidewalk and ADA ramp conditions throughout two blocks and four intersections as well as upgraded drainage facilities within both sections.

Mapping the culvert provided many difficulties; running water/sewage, confined space entry and no lighting to name a few. Borton-Lawson’s survey team chose to utilize traditional survey methods on the surface and deploy the 3D Laser Scanner for the subsurface culvert. Control was run through the project area using a robotic total station through the manholes to drop control points subsurface. Utilizing harnesses and tripods, the surveyor and equipment were then lowered into the culvert to tie into control and laser scan the 600’ of culvert. All aspects of the culvert were gathered with extreme accuracy. The data was processed in the office and combined with the traditionally collected data to be put on the plan sheets.

Through the joint effort of Borton-Lawson, Mahanoy City Borough, PennDOT District 5-0, and Clearwater Construction, the project advanced from project scoping to substantial completion in just 26 months thanks to 3D technology improving efficiency in design as well as maintaining consistent communication with all project stakeholders.
