It was great to return to school on Tuesday excited to see our friends and share stories of vacation happenings. We’ve just started the 3rd quarter and it is a good time to remind everyone about the importance of good attendance at school ad being ready to learn. Being in school every day means your child won’t miss out on learning. If your child asks to stay home “just because,” remind him/her of what they will miss such as reading group, their friends, or their teachers. Explain that he/she can only be absent if they are sick or if there’s a family emergency. Thank you for your support in helping your student achieve good attendance at school.Thank you all for a wonderful 2018 and thank you for allowing us to work with your children. Quiet Waters Elementary is an amazing school and it’s because of the amazing families we serve. Let’s have a great year doing it “The Manatee Way.”Other Important Dates to RememberJanuary 22 – Jump Rope for Heart Assembly – All gradesJanuary 25 – Career DayJanuary 28 – SAC Meeting – 7:00 a.m.Take Your Child to Work DayBroward County Public Schools will observe Take our Daughters and Sons to Work day on Friday, February 1, 2019. Students who wish to participate by joining their parent or another adult at work should submit a note to Quiet Waters’ Elementary before?Friday, February 1. Students participating in Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day will have an excused absence from school.Dental ProgramA Dental program is coming to Quiet Waters. Your child receives:A dental examEducation on how to properly brush his/her teethDental cleaning (when appropriate)Dental sealants (if needed)Fluoride treatmentToothbrush, toothpaste, flossers, timer and book about toot careReferrals for follow-up care (if needed)For your child to receive these services, you must fill out a form. Your child will be coming home with this form in the next few days. Lost and FoundAlthough it has gotten a little better, we still find unclaimed items through-out the school. We would love to see these lost items reunited with their owners. Please check the Lost and Found, located in the front office, for any item your child may have lost. It is highly suggested that you write your child’s full name on the inside of outerwear, lunch boxes, etc. Read with Your Child – DAILYAlthough the life of a parent is often hectic, you should try to read with your child at least once a day at a regularly scheduled time. But don't be discouraged if you skip a day or don't always keep to your schedule. Just read to your child as often as you possibly can. Reading with your child not only supports his/her reading skills but also language development, problem solving skills, self-regulation, and a LOVE of reading. Guidance DepartmentAbsences and TardiesExcessive absences and tardies to class can contribute to a decline in academic growth and performance. Every minute in every day is vitally important. Your child needs to be in school every day prior to 8:00 a.m. A warning bell will ring at 7:55 a.m. The tardy bell rings at 8:00 a.m. and instruction begins at 8:01 a.m. Please make every attempt to have your child in school every day and on time. If your child is absent from school, please call the school to excuse your child’s absence. After hours, you may leave a message at 754-322-8100. Please select option 1. You may contact Mrs. Donahue, our Guidance Counselor, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s attendance. In class we discussed how fortunate we are and how others may not be as blessed. We also talked about how giving to others makes us feel special. In an effort to give to others, students played an active role by completing chores at home to raise money, so we could purchase gifts for students that were not so privileged. I am proud to say that my class raised $70.00 in all and put smiles on several students faces for the holiday season. Mrs. Cormier’s Class wishes everyone a happy 2019!34861505080In December, Mrs. Chin, Mrs. Cormier, Mrs. Crosbie, Mrs. Lopez, and Ms. Magin’s classes researched different holiday traditions around the world. As a culminating activity, these classes participated in 4 different rotations. In one rotation the students learned about Chinese New Year celebrations. They then learned how to do some programming by using Ozobots (little robots) to code different ways the holiday is celebrated. In the second rotation the children were taught about the different traditions associated with Hanukkah. They enjoyed learning how to play dreidel and had some authentic treats. In the third rotation, students learned through storytelling. The children learned about the Legend of the Poinsettia and its importance in some holiday celebrations. Children then created their own poinsettia to take home. Finally, students participated in a STEM activity for an elf on the shelf. Children worked together in groups to construct the tallest shelf they could so the elf would be safe and remain untouched while learning advanced vocabulary and problem-solving skills.
